Why did Liu Bang beat XiangYu? Chu-Han contention. Lessons from Chinese History. #chinahistory
As the glosses in the history books go, the short-lived Qin Dynasty was followed by the long-lived Han Dynasty. However, a hugely significant event took place in between - the Chu-Han contention. This was a short war between the dynasties between two men, XiangYu of Chu and Liu Bang (of the Han dynasty).

Hero (2002) was directed by Zhang Yimou and starred Jet Lit, Maggie Cheung, Zhang Ziyi, and Chen Dao Ming. You all voted for it here. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxu717n4gLDKaQl3icYPqDDRk3-buMrTSH It’s fascinating how little of the film's obvious message stuck with me. I was told it was a “cool...

We all know that when words are translated the connotations and history are lost in the conversation process. This is unavoidable any form of data transfer involves this. 4 problems with modern "China Historians". Watch out for these traps when reading any history.

In this video, I will outline four problems with modern-day "China historians"/ "sinologists" The problem is that their drip-fed judgments are placed alongside decent recounting of historical facts so you might not notice them. Upon reading a recent work of "authoritative history" these personal comments were too off-putting and noticeable. Thus, I was motivated to put down the book and write a...

There’s something about periods in history when one group overtakes another or when one dynasty falls and another rises that fascinates humankind. Many fascinating books have covered this subject matter. eg. the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (Gibbon) or Ray Huang's 1587 - A Year of no Significance. Another book to add to this list is Dr Lynn Struve's. Voices from the Ming-Qing Cataclysm:...

Xiang Yu (c. 232- c.January 202 BC) was a man of another age, a man who just wanted his country back and a man with a smaller vision of the world. That’s all a matter for another video I might make - I’ve come to have more than a grudging respect for the man instrumental in his own “unaware” of making the Han dynasty possible. He is also a man who has gone down in history as the basis for multi...

Besides these Xiangyu related phrase 成语, what's your favourite Chinese phrase ? Mine is 瓜田李下.
great video! the chengyu you selected perfectly encapsulates Xiang Yu!
thank-you.
Great scene! I didnt realize Fan Zeng was quoting something. Glad you showed the source. Most of the episodes really showed the many reasons why he lost the war despite having a vastly superior military force over Liu Bang. Simply put, he was a brute, nothing more, and he was unstoppable under certain conditions. In an “honorable” battle, Xiang Yu always wins. Alas, we cannot dictate what battlefield we will be fighting in..

😅😅😅i
Yes. it's a great source of wisdom. I am working on an analysis of Xiangyu and why he lost. Xiangyu was reputedly a fearsome warrior. He was also a man of "honour" at times. eg. at the feast of hongmen "鴻門宴" refusing to go along with Fan Zeng's plan of killing Liu Bang - a decision which came back to haunt him. I've come to have respect for this type of character. Ultimately, there is no stable "Han dynasty" and Liu Bang without the brute force of someone like Xiangyu to sweep the table of the Qin dynasty (at the battle of Julu).
I did not get this scene until it was mentioned afterwards by some generals in Chu putting down Han Xin. I guess back then information is passed down in this manner
The last episode 80 has Han Xin returning to his former haunts and there's some well earned plot pay-off to be found there.

This is great timing! Im almost finish with your earlier recommendation (楚漢傳奇). Great recommendation by the way and I look forward to seeing your other recommendations and looking back on your analysis
enjoy. It's an underrated film.

yes. Han xin makes this point in KingsWar. Liu Bang was a master of delegation. At the same time, Xiangyu didn't help himself. 有一范增而不能用

10:46 Hán 韓 and Hàn 漢 aren't the same state.
Indeed, the character is different in Chinese. Interestingly, Zhang Liang 張良, cheif military strategist of Liu Bang (Han Gaozu) was descended from an aristocrat family in the former Hán 韓 state.
Why do you think the Qin Empire fell?

You have piqued my interest and will definitely give it a try. Thank you!
it was available on Netflix last time I looked. The subtitles are reliably good. It contains many chengyu from Chinese history.
@@sinolit surprised its available in netflix as King’s War! Already finished the first episode. Anyway I will avoid watching your clips for now just to avoid spoilers but looking forward to watching them
yes. it was a pleasant surprise that the subtitles were good to me. usually the subtitles are awful

The Tencent series is far superior imo . Netflix not so much .
yes. all the decisions made in adaptation for the Netflix version somehow managed to make a great Science fiction, dull, uninspiring and rushed.
This is a gem...unexpected and just found
Thank-you. KingsWar is rich in such historical insight.
I remember this scene. Xiao He read documents beforehand and knew that the area was good for farming. It was very difficult to get there though but I guess it worked to their advantage since they were safe from attacks
@@seeanthonyn The Sichuan basin was still fairly new to the mostly Yellow River basin born civilisations - only being incorporated in the Qin conquest. It is plausible that Fan Zeng would know little about it - a fatal error.
Good video
Thank-you. The series deserves more attention than it gets.
I loved Peter Ho as Lü Bu in Three Kingdoms. I don't think I've heard of this series. Will come to it after Chu and Han series that I started but never finished.
yes. he's great as Xiangyu. A suitable mixture of arrogance and naive child.
Thank you very much for your research on James Legge. He is definitely a great inspiration for us.
James Legge needs to be known by more people. He was an incredible human being and it's sign of our times that so little is known of his legacy.
The Mongol word for warrior is, "Daichin ᠳᠠᠶᠢᠴᠢᠨ" in which the Jurchens of the early medieval period borrowed their lexicon to name their Jin dynasty, and once again in a reiteration for the Qing one: 2.0 Манжууд = 大清 Dài Qīng gurun ᡩᠠᡳᠴᡳᠩ ᡤᡠᡵᡠᠨ (дайчин ᠳᠠᠶᠢᠴᠢᠨ) 1644-1912 CE 1.0 Зүрчид ᠵᡠᡧᡝᠨ ᠵᠥᠷᠴᠢᠳ = 大金 Dài Jīn gurun (дайчин ᠳᠠᠶᠢᠴᠢᠨ) 1115-1234 CE Manchus are the latter Jurchens who are the easternmost, part Mongolic-Tungusic folks. So in more ways than one, the Qing dynasty was a fusion/hybridity of Manchu-Mongol polity.
We are in agreement that the "manchus" qing dynasty were not a mere replacement of family at the top. They considered themselves as different. Unfortunately, most people were unaware of subversion at the top due to the fact that so many turncoats co-operated with the new "regime"
From the reviews I've read of the Netflix vs. the Tencent versions, the only thing that I am impressed by the is incredible amount of money spent at Netflix for a result that even the original Startrek would have cancelled. It's an insult that the story is sacrificed for on-air time and ratings.
it was really poor. Remember the embaressing opening lines from "auggie" (YeAH, i'M a rEsEARCher iN NAnoTechnOloGY)? From the first original scene without copying the book it was awful. An incredible feat.
Genuinely awesome analysis!
Thank-you. A great adaptation of a great scene in a great book. The scene deserves more attention than it gets.
It reminds me of how Claudius played the fool to survive in Rome until he became emperor.
Unfortunately for Zi Ying, his ruse only kept him alive until after his rival (Qin Er Shi) had died. He reigned for a month before XiangYu at the head of the Chu rebellion took over and according to Kingswar gave him the opportunity to take his own life rather than face humiliation. Playing dumb was probably the only strategy available to him but it didn't work as well as it may have done for Claudius.
Great channel. Love their podcast.
Yes. it's great. I started listening back in 2015 approx.
Personally I liked the Netflix version more. The Chinese one was slooooow for me 😂
Characterisation in the Netflix version was nursery school level eg. Jin and Auggie in the bar saying their job titles. Ye Wenjie's storyline was embaressing - completely missing out the Yang WeiNing storyline in order to give her unimpeded justification to send the message. The tencent version was for people with a longer attention span. The Netflix one went "faster" for people who couldn't think for themselves or wait for tension to build.
I wish I had time to re watch it :) Or even better, to read the book! :O
I think i'll be making analysis of the good scenes over the series in the next few months. join me
well, it seems like you merely know about the history of mongols, since you don't know that there were severe punishments up to death sentence, for warriors that didn't follow the discipline.
Well, The Books used the army of the Qin Dynasty. The Tencent series used the army of the Qin dynasty. Both worked visually and were historically credible. Why did they change it? Dumbing down? Appealing to the lowest common denominator? The Qin dynasty gave the world Shang Yang, legalism, the terracotta warriors. Point me towards the comparative legacy bequethed to the world by the mongols. I'll wait. Also, the video never said there wasn't the phenomena of "military discipline" within the Mongol army, but that no-one has this over-arching impression of them and that no legacy of this was left behind. This made the representation in Netflix's dumbed down version unbelievable.
Watch this in 1.5x speed.
Steady on. It's good youtube has this function because recording in one go would have too many errors if i spoke faster.
