The trouble is sir most people live at 100 miles per hour each day. And don't realise.
Very true. Hopefully this little video can be a moment of clarity!
what state the video was film, the landscape and weather are nice ?
This is all Upstate New York!
and you came right back to the youtube ladder? f outtahere
What can I say - I enjoy it as a fun hobby when it's done intentionally ☺
@@petegierlach yes, orange.
True words. Greetings from Romania!
Thank you, and hello from America!
Great video mate
Thank you!
Great video Pete. I love the reflections. I appreciate the idea of slow living is best with some growth too, and the idea that if we are aware in the present, we will actually remember our previous year and the following year won't sneak up on us.
Thank you so much Dan!
Thank you so much Peter for more great, realistic advice. My favorite parts of this video is the idea of taking responsibility yourself instead of depending on a magic fix, and finding personal challenges to overcome. Can't wait for your book!
Thank you so much! I'm really happy it resonated with you. The book's coming along nicely, a new update should be sent out in the next few days ☺ Any challenges you have in mind for the new year?
@@petegierlach I'm in the midst of a pretty big life/career change (I'm leaving my job mid-January) and I'm hoping to use the year to slow down and figure out what I want to do with the next few years of my life. I think a lot of it is figuring out what I want and who I am now. I showed my husband your video on forest bathing and he was interested so I think we may start there! 🌳
@@amallama1510 Good for you! It takes a lot of courage to make a change like that. And sounds like it'll be a great experience for the two of you! Wishing you the best
Sure wish I lived closer to a forest. City parks just aren't the same.
One of the things I've found is that even tiny patches of nature can foster a sense of connectedness and change, if we go often enough and pay attention. Hopefully you can find that in the city park, even if it's not as immersive as a forest!
Absolutely beautiful scenery! A treat for my senses, as I could feel the wind on my skin and smell the mulch beneath my feet! Thank you so much for sharing this!
Thanks Sue!!
Great video Peter. Isn’t it wonderful that we can still get to a Forest and escape our cement prisons.😊
Glad you enjoyed it! And yes, it's so necessary!
Thanks so much for this video. The scenery is spectacular. I live in Newfoundland, Canada surrounded by beautiful scenery and love to forest bathe as often as possible.
That's such a beautiful part of the world, I'd love to check it out sometime! So glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi Pete, I'm so happy to see how you are challenging yourself in this new phase of life. Following along is also very inspiring for me, and I'm slowly starting on a similiar path. I look forward to reading your new book and following you on your journey. -Dan
Thanks so much, Dan! Happy to be of help and I wish you the best of luck on your own journey. Thanks for your support!
You live in a lovely corner of the world!
Thank you!

Hi Billy! Great to hear from you. Go ahead and shoot me an email at petergierlach@gmail.com. Hope all's well!
Just subbed, looks like an epic journey. Going to check out your vlog. What type of running bag is that the black and white one?
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. That's a Hyperlite Mountain Gear Contour 35 pack! It's an awesome pack, super light and allowed me to bring some extra gear in case we had to stay overnight
You are a great inspiration. Whether it has been inside or outside of the classroom you always find ways to brighten the lives of others, even strangers online. A simple thank you would not do the goodness you've done justice. My condolences for your loss, I think that knowing just how inspiring you were as a teacher goes to show you were certainly an inspiration for them as well. We all wish you the best Mr.G, forever and always.
This made my day Adrian. Thank you so much for sharing this, I really do appreciate it deeply, and I hope you are doing well and enjoying life!
Looking at the CDT to dip my toe into "lighter" not necessarily UL gear for backpicking/hiking. May I ask why you didn't choose the CDT in Ultra 200X?
Great review. I have the ULA circuit and love it. Got my gear pretty dialed now and thinking I can make the jump to the CDT.
some great thoughts here ...
Thanks!
Very nice video ! Such beaufitul places and landscapes !
Thank you!
As a kind of mirror of society you can find different kind of Hikers. Fast hikers, long distance hikers, ... slow hikers who tend to be unadvertised by nature. Very nice video Pete, thank you very much for this narration. The good side of actual hiking trend is the breakthrough about ultralight gear. This should allow us to stop thinking about it during hiking, instead of thinking about it all the time. A book in connection with some of your ideas : "on the wandering paths" of Sylvain Tesson. The real title is "Les chemins noirs", "The black paths" because in France on our topographic maps, the secondary and very small paths are in black, instead of flashy purple for famous hiking paths... Quite a french way of writing of course, but it resonates with some of your thoughts.
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll have to check it out, sounds like a beautiful book. And I love your interpretation for the concept 🙌
Very inspiring. Thanks. I love slow hiking too :-)
Great video my friend.. Planning my own slow hiking experience.. I am 50,out of shape,I take medication and have numerous chronic injuries, not to mention a completely debilitating case of general anxiety disorder.. I am loading up a pack and hitting the Lone Star Hiking Trail in a month or 2.. A slow, non hurried, walk through the Sam Houston National Forrest.
Hey that's awesome, good for you and I hope it goes well!
I have often thought this when I see people racing along trails, especially those on ATVs and dirt bikes, where they can't even hear the sounds of the forest. Beautiful video, thanks so much for creating and sharing.
Really enjoyed this, thank you for sharing!
just found your page, keep up the good, subscribed
Thank you!
Very important message! Thank you.
Thank you very much! Appreciate it :)
Did an arduous week long trip with my GF this past year. Never realized to look back at it through the frame of minimalism. I'll share this vid with her.
Awesome, thanks! Hopefully it was a fun and meaningful trip for you 🙂

beautiful
Thank you! Much appreciated ☺
You deserve far more views. This was important.
Thank you! I appreciate it 🙂 Hopefully it resonated with you.
Subscribed! Your video reminded me of my most memorable moments while out on big hikes. When fully relaxed and lost in wonderment I experienced much more. 9.9/10 video. Had the cadence of your talk slowed a bit.. 10/10.
I'm glad it resonated with you! Same here, I love the sense of wonder that comes at the right moments. And thanks for the compliment! This was my first crack at narration. I'm working on another video now, I'll make sure to pace it out a bit better. Plus, I have more footage for the next one lol 😅
I've seen hikers literally "race" through marvellous landscapes in order to reach a mountain top in as little time as possible, or to reach a goal distant 20 km, stopping briefly only to eat, drink or pee. True hiking is not about how far or high you manage to go. True hiking is all about the journey itself, about enjoying and paying attention to all the details of the nature surrounding you, the scents and sounds you notice only when you stop for a while and observe in silence.
So beautifully said! Thank you for sharing! ☺
Sounds like you are finding the gaps between thoughts, what Eckhart Tolle calls the presence? One foot in front of the other. Thankyou for sharing your mindful practice. It is beautiful to be in nature without thinking, and a major challenge to reach that summit, wherever it is!
Yes! I've been reading The Power of Now and I think you described it beautifully! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I really appreciate the kind words, so thank you😀 The thumbnail photo is in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, and much of the hiking in this video took place in Upstate New York!
@@petegierlach It is a magical book! Yet Eckhart's work, is just his own perception of this ancient practice... Being in the present moment. Letting go of thoughts while being in nature had such a profound effect on me, that it was not enough to simply be with nature, I wanted nature inside of me. It sent me on a journey into fresh ripe fruit and salads, the clean foods that nature provides. The results are astonishing, and every level of experience is enhanced!
@@CitrusSimon That's awesome to hear! I feel like the more natural/human we live, the healthier and better off we become.
@@petegierlach Indeed Peter. We are biological beings, like any other creature in nature, we are not technological or medical creatures which is what thinking does to us. We have a choice, to identify with the real, and be in wonderland, or identify with thought, and go around and around in circles, like a dog chasing its own tail.
Right on ☺️
Thank you!
So good! Thanks
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
What a video, truly fantastic video. This is narrated and composed masterfully!
Thank you so much! I really, really appreciate that. Have a wonderful day! ☺
This video has truly changed my perspective on the way I think and go about life. I would always feel the stress of having to do or be productive and never have taken a second to "embrace the moment. Now that I have watch this video I'm going to try slow hiking a few trails in my local park.
That's great! I definitely believe there's a balance. As long as productivity is meaningful and intentional, and not just for the sake of it. But sometimes, to get there, we need to drop it completely and only pick up the pieces that matter. Let me know how your slow hikes go! Thanks so much for watching! 🙂
Is this pack too large to use as a day pack? Im trying to decide between proton or CDT for day hike and winter sports pack. Thank you.
Hey! It's definitely larger than a typical daypack, for sure. However, it's also extremely light, which may offset the size for you. I typically use my Hyperlite Mountain Gear Daybreak Pack for day hikes, however this could be used just fine since it weighs less than 2 lbs. Ultimately it comes down to sizing and if you're okay with a larger (but still ultralight) pack for day hikes. I hope this helped!
@@petegierlach Thank you for the information. I decided to go with the Proton in X Pac Ranger green and coyote 🎉. I have been using the Catalyst this summer and love it.
@@forestdweller512 Nice! I hope it works out for you, looks like a great pack!
Who are those weirdos disturbing your peace?
You mean the ones ruining the entire park?
Name one ultralight backpack that’s $4-600.
www.hyperlitemountaingear.com/products/prism-pack?variant=30211663626285&gclid=CjwKCAjwp7eUBhBeEiwAZbHwkQgiTMUieKC5iLwWeLgLvkqqaKrDehU6PYVIu5We2uKwjWG-rFUQ0hoCcMYQAvD_BwE
When looking towards 6, must have had the more heavy duty packs in mind (but they are certainly out there). If I could re-record, 3-4 would be the statement.
Great video. I used to have the CDT and it was a good pack, but it wasnt that comfortable for me and i felt it was too big for the weight load is was rated at. There is also the Zpacks Nero for around the same price at 10 oz and the weight limit is 20 lbs which is 2 more than the CDT. if i had to choose a pack i would most definitely go with the Nero.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Makes sense. For me it fits like a glove but naturally that won't be the case for everyone. But that's really good to know about the Nero and hopefully others who watch can see this! Who knows, someday maybe Nero will send me a pack so I can do a comparison 😂
Great review!!! I recently picked up the ULA ohm 2.0 and I love it. I definitely had a difficult time choosing between the CDT, the Circuit or the ohm and decided on the ohm because I didn’t think I was ready to go frameless but after seeing this review, I think I would have been happy with either pack. ULA makes a quality pack for sure!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. I was looking at the ohm as well! I decided in the moment to go as light as possible after the horrors of my ultra-heavy pack lol. I haven't had an issue with it being frameless...having the sleeping pad slid into those straps does help. I really like ULA as well and would love to try their other stuff. Thanks so much for watching!
