Lake Wairarapa’s Kākahi Crisis—What’s Next?
Uniting for Change: 10 Years of Community Monitoring Exposes Lake Wairarapa’s Kākahi Crisis-What’s Next?
For a decade, the Wairarapa Moana Kākahi Count has been a beacon of community-driven conservation. Since 2015, local volunteers have come together to monitor the health of our native freshwater mussel, the kākahi, creating a unique citizen science program that has provided crucial ecological insights.
This initiative has not only delivered valuable data but also deepened the community’s connection to Lake Wairarapa. Through hands-on involvement, locals have forged a stronger bond with the lake and its environment.

Mills Street Stopbank Upgrade
Просмотров 162Месяц назад
We’re upgrading the Mills Street stopbank. It will be approximately 1.5 metres higher and will allow more water to pass safely during floods. This phase of work will be completed in October. This is part of an upgrade to the Hutt Valley’s flood protection system to withstand a 1 in 440-year flood event. Allowing for climate change, there’s a 0.2% chance of a flood that size in any year. For mor...

Can you spot toxic algae?
Просмотров 2366 месяцев назад
Can you spot toxic algae? When you head to the river this summer, keep an eye out for toxic algae. If in doubt keep your dog on a lead and away from the river's edge. And most importantly, don't let your dog scavenge anything from the riverbank. For more information and to find out if it's safe to swim, visit: LAWA.ORG.NZ

the nudge the best
Awesome tree! Hopefully the pest control is ongoing.
Hey, I'm Marcy, 33 years old. I've been working in the integrative sector in Germany for 15 years. I was in New Zealand in 2016/2017 and I fell in love with the country and its people. perhaps an unusual way to apply. It would be my biggest dream to work as a park ranger in New Zealand. I would be so happy if something came along one day. great video and all the best to you. KIA ORA :)
Absolutely Not
A solar farm would be lucky to manage to power a train. It would need to cover square kilometres. You need hydro, gas and wind. Solar is pie in the sky, unless you have big flat deserts like Western Australia and Arizona.
Mīharo! Can we get a update?
Let’s hope we see major improvements in bus reliability then
Inspirational!!
Very well explained. Thank you♥
Well done! Great to see new tools in our search for sustainable water solutions
Would those even work if searching for if there is a devil hiding somewhere underground
Would appreciate a follow up view now 1 year later.
It is possible to have multiple units and locomotives that can operate with more than one voltage. The original Eurostar Class 373 trains were able to run on 3rd rail 750v DC, 25 Kva, OLE and at least two other European voltages. For NZ conditions that would be 1,500 DC OLE and 25 Kva OLE. It is possible that Japan could supply trains for that specification as their main network ( not Shinkansen) is 1067mm (3ft-6in) gauge the same as KiwiRail. It is also possible they would have secondhand items available as well. A further possibility is retrofitting the KiwiRail Class 30 locomotives for the lower Wellington region voltage. So far about three of the 15 to be rebuilt have been delivered, but I wonder why it was never considered a possibility? Not joined up thinking! If Waikanae-Palmerston North was energised for 1,500V DC OLE it would solve two problems in one, as this would permit an “Electric Trunk” with the final link Pukekohe to Te Rapa at 25Kva. Once again I have never read or heard about this possibility from any Government or MP. The cost of such a scheme would pale against the Billions spent on roads over the last 50 years. Environmentally a win as well.
First of all, it's just 'kV' (kilovolts), not 'kVa' which is a measure of power rather than just voltage, and the Wellington electrification is 1600 volts, not 1500. Second, despite the Auckland electrification being 25 kV, there are incompatibilities with the NIMT 25 kV system. Same voltage but prospective short circuit currents, traction load, breaker ratings and several other factors come into play meaning the Class 30 locos which run the NIMT could not work around Auckland and the suburban EMU could not run on the NIMT as the systems currently stand. This isn't a problem right now, but it is likely that electrification will be extended from Te Rapa through to Pukekohe at some stage, meaning Auckland to Palmerston North will be electrified all the way. The incompatibilities will need to be addressed at that point. It would also be the right time to change Wellington's system to 25 kV and standardize the electric system throughout the country, which would allow freight trains especially to run non-stop from Auckland to Wellington instead of having to switch motive power several times during the trip. This would then require either the Matangi units to be converted to 25 kV or new rolling stock to be purchased. Given the costs involved, it is unlikely that Waikanae to Wellington will be converted to 25 kV any time in the near future. The Wellington 1600 V DC system would not be able to provide sufficient power for the EF locos if they were converted to operate on that voltage as well, and the system is best suited to short-haul services with frequent stopping and starting as the passenger trains do. They are also much lighter and don't draw anywhere near the power that a fully loaded Class 30 can. For these reasons and no doubt many others, that's why you have not heard of such plans. There has already been a North Island Electrification study carried out which looked at all of these issues as well as new electrification from Pukekohe to Te Rapa, Hamilton to Mt Maunganui, Palmerston North to Waikanae and Upper Hutt to Masterton.
And they want to build a waste station by it 🙄
Now, with the change of Govt and the immediate axing of the AKL light rail project, is this desperately required up grade likely to face the axe as well? Also, as these will be stabled and maintain in Masterton, what charging infrastructure will be build. Plug in type devices or will a few small sections of overhead catenary be install so pantographs can pick power from above?
It remains to be seen what the effects of the new government will be for rail. Already I have heard a comment on Newstalk ZB that the government will be "shifting its focus from rail to roads ..." so that's just one indication of where we are headed. Today I read that they are also not prepared to stump up the extra money to help with purchase of the new ferries for Cook Straight - another indication. Also, the Auckland Light Rail project has not been axed. There has been a "stop work" order issued, but light rail is still on the table. It is expected that a new plan will be drawn up, with significantly less cost and that will be one which has the tracks "at grade" - on the streets instead of underground (as was planned for the CBD). There was a photo and caption showing that the tracks will run up Queen St as they used to 70 years ago.
The problem is the in between the seat spot is the furtheresr away from the door. And yet none of the passengers will move to let you access it... And then they grumble at you being in the way instead in the aisle. Typical.
Thanks for your mahi mates!
Cheers guys
Both inspiring and informative, ngā mini nui Rā
Brilliant developments......what a shame there is total blindness in Canterbury to the idea of commuter and regional rail.
Agree, thanks for the informative presentation.
Well done. You both have a very impressive grasp of the details and insights. I look forward to the progress.

Great video! Personally recommend the Litelok X1 and X3 and the Hiplok D1000, being currently the only angle-grinder resistant bike locks on the market by using a material almost as hard as diamond instead of regular steel.
Nice one Gary, it's one of my favourite walks too, and there are three bird count stations on it (in case other twitchers are interested)

Out of curiosity, does it let all types of cargo bikes through while keeping motorcycles out? Who makes those?

Sorry to say that this was the biggest mistake in removing the Trams from the streets of New Zealand 🇳🇿 they should still be running in the streets and now should be light rail 🚈 and I used to love driving there Trams 🚊 for summer my faves were 151 and 159 with all the doors 🚪 and windows 🪟 open and running at speed and getting a nice breeze coming through the windows 🪟 doors 🚪
Will they survive in Southland
