Compute Infrastructure & Power Will Enable AI to Scale: Chase Lochmiller (Crusoe) at Cerebral Valley
Crusoe CEO Chase Lochmiller steered a breakout discussion group on the need for more compute power to fuel this AI boom.
Founders and investors interrogated whether we could build enough data centers quickly enough since most are already close to capacity. Energy demands were also a hot topic, and Lochmiller stressed the need for more renewable energy resources to power AI tools.
Primary’s Tobias Citron questioned the premise that scale alone would be what it takes to better power AI, and suggested that building more middleware to help AI tools run more efficiently was also a big piece of the puzzle.

Love Language Models: George Arison (Grindr) in conversation with Madeline Renbarger
Просмотров 2272 месяца назад
Grindr CEO George Arison said AI would propel the venerable hook-up app’s efforts to better serve a global community where 25% of the users were on the road at any given time, and were also increasingly interested in long-term relationships. “Dating is a very limited geography,” he noted, which is a big issue especially in the gay community. “If we can break down barriers outside of your geogra...

Built in NYC: Olivier Pomel (Datadog) in conversation with Madeline Renbarger
Просмотров 2912 месяца назад
Olivier Pomel of Datadog told Newcomer’s Madeline Renbarger that New York City has emerged as a competitive market for AI talent in the past few years, and that it was “easier to understand how to build the right product there than it is in the Bay Area.” Pomel said his customers, who range from small businesses to mid-market enterprises, are “all still figuring out how to adopt AI” through exp...
The State of Generative AI: Vince Hankes, Sarah Guo, & Shardul Shah with Eric Newcomer

Vince Hankes of Thrive Capital, Sarah Guo of Conviction, and Shardul Shah of Index Ventures kicked off the day, deeming it a happy “summertime” in the business, though they did largely agree that the nature of the opportunity is shifting. “The vast majority of founders should not be working on foundation models,” said Hankes, an investor in OpenAI. Guo said that open-source models were creating...
Lessons from Past Technology Waves: Pat Grady (Sequoia) in conversation with Eric Newcomer
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.2 месяца назад
Sequoia partner Pat Grady traced his firm’s AI journey to 2016-2018, when it was becoming clear that cloud and mobile were late in the cycle and partners began “dedicating more of our time to scanning the horizon.” Digging deep on data and machine learning, he said, led the firm to Hugging Face and some of the application companies that have led the current wave. He likened foundation models to...
The Geopolitical Stakes for LLMs: Josh Wolfe & Teresa Carlson with Zoe Weinberg
Просмотров 1832 месяца назад
China is never far from the AI conversation, and there’s a fierce debate over whether open-source LLMs are helping America’s geo-political arch-rival. Josh Wolfe of Lux Capital kicked off the discussion by saying the quiet part out loud: where people stand on this issue “depends on where you sit in the cap table.” He pointed to Vinod Khosla, the first investor in OpenAI and a leading critic of ...

Scott Belsky sold his company to Adobe in 2012, stayed on for a few years, and last year returned to Adobe in the midst of an AI upheaval that poses many risks for the company, but also carries big opportunities. Bringing powerful new tools to marketing professionals is an important direction, Belsky said. He noted that marketing tends to have a lot of middle layers of agencies and contractors,...

But both panelists reassured the audience that despite AI’s inevitability, it would unlock...

Hey Ali - how are you spending the $32M you got from selling shares in December as mentioned in January Tender Offer’s disclosure docs? Silencing Databricks female staffers who didn’t submit to your perversions and filed sexual harassment lawsuits? Bribing news agencies to publish false DBRX LLM and TPCDS performance claims, so you could dangle the IPO carrot and continue hiring and brainwashing? While everyone slaves away at DBX for that elusive IPO, you and Amy Reichanadter are destroying the company one day at a time. Shameful and despicable, how do you both sleep at night? (your cocaine habit helps you stay awake. Have you got Amy hooked on snow too?)

In December '23, two Databricks founders and one board member each amassed $32M by selling their shares at $65. This was disclosed in the Jan '24 stock buyback's risk documents issued by Databricks itself. Quite a standout company since its valuation hasn't gone down from the peak of 2021 and is able to get the same multiples! Great ROI for employees and investors when it goes public!
