Since 2015 I'm exploring different instruments made with the same Wicki keyboards. I began with a Wicki/Hayden duet concertina, and in 2021 I ordered a striso duet prototype to Piers Titus van der Torren, the inventor of the striso board (striso.org).
In 2022 I received the first bandotin designed and made by Harry Geuns in Belgium (bandoneon-maker.com). The bandotin is an hybrid instrument made with the reeds system of a bandoneon and the keyboard of a Wicki concertina. With this keyboard the scales and chords are played in all the keys with the same fingerings, which makes it more intuitive. Thereby this system is also easier for transposition and improvisation.

A few years ago I played a first basic arrangement of this piece in E minor. Recently while traveling with my concertina I heard a wonderful rendition of this famous tune played on the solo bandoneon. This made me want to give a try to a more elaborate version in the original key of C minor.

Composed by Juan Jose Mosalini. Last November I went to the tribute concert for Juan Jose Mosalini in Gennevilliers, the French capital of the bandoneon. I was very impressed and it made me want to arrange this beautiful composition on my bandotin.

Armenian traditional tune. According to the Roman alphabet the country that comes after Argentina is Armenia, and the free reed instrument that comes after the bandoneon is the bandotin. It's the reason why all bandoneonists often play Argentine music, and all bandotinists sometimes try to play Armenian music as well. Dedicated to the Armenian people of Artsakh

Composed by Paul Macarnet and Jean Lenon I learned this tune from an itinerant Flemish musician, Cornelius, who claimed that it was quite popular in France in the second half of the 20th century. In fact, he often played it among other love songs at weddings and other social gatherings in northern France around this period. But by the 1990s, techno and DJs were taking over from live music. As t...

It's one of the most beautiful bandoneon tunes that I have listened to recently (IMHO), and it's why I wanted to give it a first try on my bandotin. Thanks to Ninon Valder for the sheet music (I wish I could also sing and whistle but maybe for the next step). Playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLiG41qUja1FvyK01HDxi0Pz-yEY-a4Xcu

Basic adaptation of JS Bach Air on the G string (from Suite No3, BWV 1068). In 1871, violinist August Wilhelmj arranged the second movement of Bach's third Orchestral Suite for violin and an accompaniment of strings, piano or organ (harmonium). On the score he wrote auf der G-Saite (on the G string) above the staff for the solo violin, which gave the arrangement its nickname. In Wilhelmj's vers...

Lovely! I like how this is a tune that we keep coming back to!
Yes, it's one of the few tunes that I never get tired of, and also a good way to test the sound of my different instruments.
Beautiful! The deep sound is amazing. Bravo❤

Beautiful. What model of the duet? I’m looking for one that has a good sound like yours.
Hello, thanks for your comment and interest. It’s a Wicki or Hayden duet concertina. The name of the model is the Beaumont, made some years ago by the Button Box in Massachusetts, but unfortunately they stopped all their production.
Are you using a bluetooth speaker here? The pulsed RF from Bluetooth (and wifi and cell phones and towers and antennas) are all very damaging to health of the body and brain and should never be used. Using a wired speaker is better. Is this in Pythagorean tuning? Have you ever tried developing a two handed functional playing technique on one of the striso boards? At a distance playing with two hands on one of them looks inconvenient because seemingly the hands are on top of one another and all the keys are covered, but I think there must be some way to do it well. The technique should not be with one hand going over the top and one at the bottom as I have seen others do. This is because this layout can, and should go out much wider than a mere 17 notes per octave, so in a wider board with more notes, going over the top from underneath would not be possible. Likewise with your duo instrument, the boards cannot be extended into the double flats and sharps and beyond (as far as I can imagine) with 2 separate boards to separate the hands. The boards would be too wide or in the case of your duo instrument, too tall.
Hello, thanks for your comment! No, I was using a wired little speaker connected to my iPad and it’s the traditional tuning. I never tried to play with both hands on a single board but I think that there is still a lot to explore with this instrument. I would be very interested to listen to other musicians using it in different ways.
@@Soloduet0703 I have been experimenting with different orientations and angles of this layout with only one board for both hands. It seems the best one is slightly unintuitive for us who have grown up with pianos. If one has more than 17 notes per octave, let say, 41 tuning in Pythagorean just intonation, then the best orientationi is almost a perfect mirror of this layout. Where the whole tones ascend up and to the left, and octaves ascend up and to the right. This would not only be very different for piano folks but it would also be strange in that the sharps would be on the left side of the board and the flats on the right side. The reason for this mirrored layout is to make for optimal ergonmics for the hands for large five note chords and for scales AND it also allows one to keep ones hands less on top of one another which can really help when playing accompaniment with the left hand and a melody in the right hand treble. Having the ability for the hands to play separate lines is key, especially when the two parts are close together in the same octave. This mirrored layout also allows you to keep the right hand playing the treble parts and the right hand playing the bass parts. And as long as you line up Db and C# an octave and a comma higher so that they are straight across left to right when siiting at the keyboard, they layout does not drift up and down to the sides of the player as you keep going out by whole tones to the right and left. It also seems that rather than being completely isomorphic, a pseudo isomorphic layout, like unto a qwerty keyboard, where the rows are slightly off set every two rows of keys improves ergononics for the hands considerably.. With this pseudo isomorphic layout, the same chord shape for all like chords and scales are similar enough so you can position you fingers and hands in the smae way for every major chord, for example, but likewise improving the ergonmics of said chord shapes. The real question though is, is anyone brave enough to make a keyboard for sale where the whole tones ascend up and to the left? It is a small hurdle considering all the advantages the keyboard would offer. A keyboad like this could play in just intonation perfectly and modulate to any key with the edition or foot pedals to shift commas up and down. The lumatones layout cannot do this without turning the keyboard at a sharp angle and the number of octaves are very limited only 3 to 4. A full keyboard like this with 77 pitch classes available on the board at once (with more available with the shifting of the foot pedals) and 7 octaves, would be ideal or near ideal. Of course it could be fully adequate with less notes and octaves also, but 77 would be ideal and would really minimize the need to use any foot pedals, if you would even need them at all.
It sounds magical!
Thank you Aidas, I would like to listen to this tune on your garmonika too!
Just wonderful...well done
Thank you so much!
Beautifully executed... Majestic… Just Delightful. Thank you.
Thanks a lot!
Espectacular
Muchas gracias!
Wonderful to hear this beautiful complete arrangement for the duet. Something to aspire to! Thank you.
Thank you Vincent! I could discover all your wonderful recordings and obviously you don't need a duet concertina to play polyphonic music. Your arrangements and your english concertina sound fantastic. If you have the sheet music for Around Midnight and La Mer I would be interested. Didie
Aah thank you Didie… Kind comments indeed. The English concertina lends itself surprisingly well to jazz ballads… But it’s much harder to add an accompaniment to a melody like this on the English. I’ll respond more fully by email ( I have yours from a previous exchange). Vincent.
Bravo!
Merci!
