Amazing pictures. I'm also from Sri Lanka, Did you come here for a project? Where can i see them?
Hi Mahinthan. I was in Sri Lanka in 2015. Wonderful country! I was working on a project about Human-Elephant conflict gallagher-photo.com/environmental-stories-sri-lanka-last-elephants/

Super video!🙂
Thank you very much!
Several pictures, see bird pictures, seem to have been created with AI
I'm not sure how/why you came to this conclusion? My photos are real. No AI.
So, please excuse my opinion. I noticed an unusual sharpness of the animals, especially when depicting the eagles or hawks. I myself once tried to spice up a rather boring image of a desert panorama with a flying bird. The result was similar, very disappointing for me.
Another excellent and useful video, Sean. Thanks very much. All the example photos were impactful, actually. I think my favourite would be the river in Cambodia in late afternoon / sunset light.
Thanks, glad you liked the Cambodia photo. That's one of my favourites too 👍 Glad the video was useful to you, John.
Loved the photo of the city traffic jam and the lone cyclist In that golden light. Will definitely try out these strategies. Thanks and a Happy New Year🎉🎉🎉
Thanks, Ann. I like that one too. Looking forward to seeing your landscapes. Happy New Year!
Cheers for that... have a good one.
✊
@@SeanGallagherPhotographer One thing that I feel compelled to say is that, according to my naive perspective on things, having a human in the frame can have a profound impact - quite different from an errant budgie. The latter are always welcome, but I think very carefully about including a human. I understand it as a 'device' but, (again, for me) even if it makes for a 'better photo', there are consequences for the image and its message (or range of plausible readings). Makes for an interesting problem to mull over. Cheers from NZ.
Whether a bird or a human, the connection between the viewer and image changes. Often this addition adds deeper meaning. But the meaning is in the interpretation of the viewer.
This video have proved that interesting landscape photos are not so easy to take. I was always take a boring landscapes and don't quite know how to make them more interesting, your tips open my eyes a lot. Thank you for the video. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!🎄🎆🎉🎊
I'm glad the video inspired you! Happy Holidays to you too!🎄🎉
Did anyone notice what the lady was doing infront of the lion sculpture 😮😮
What focal lengths did you use? How did that impact your choice of framing. It seems you used a longer lens (not 35 or 50) correct?
Hi Richard. On this day I was using a 24-105mm Canon lens which is quite a big zoom for me. Normally I like to work with primes, ideally a 35mm, as it eliminates the extra time you need to pick the appropriate focal length . No matter what lens I am using, I try to react instinctually in the moment and frame according to the scene in front of me. So if I am using a zoom, I will pick what I think is the most appropriate focal length for what I see in front of me and then wait for the moment to appear in the frame to make the picture.
If techniques are far too obvious and look like a glossary for great captures, then something is lost anyway
Not sure is this is compliment or criticism 😆 Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Lovely peaceful composition. Well worth the wait! And such a useful tip too
Glad the tip was useful 👍

I’m sorry. I like the idea of this type of instruction, but, like the first commenter, I don’t think the photos are special. Minimal layering, just ok moments, fine but not at all extraordinary composition.
Interesting feedback. I didn't claim these images were "extraordinary". Just showing what's possible to the everyday photographer how to improve their images.
Thank you for visiting the beautiful land and warm-hearted people of Cambodia!
Thanks to the people of Cambodia for being so warm and hospitable to me 🙏
I've long held the view that the golden 'hour' is a fictitious and spurious concept. Granted in some parts of the planet for certain parts of the year such a concept does have certain validity. But where I live in Northern England, around the Winter solstice, the golden 'hour' lasts practically the greater portion of the day as the winter sun never get's higher than about 14 degrees above the horizon. At the Summer solstice, that's the same elevation as half way through the golden 'hour'. If you spend your photography time waiting for ideal golden hour conditions, you will waste an enormous amount of shooting time and some great landscape opportunities. One famous landscape photographer once said 'photograph the light, not the location' and to me that means learning to make compelling images in so-called unfavourable conditions, e.g, dull flat lighting. I seriously doubt (as you point out) you would have been so successful had you spent your working days waiting for ideal light.
Hi Berny. As a young aspiring photographer, I honed my craft photographing the landscapes and people of Lancashire 🙂 Of course, whether you live in northern England, or northern Kenya... the lighting will be vastly different during different times of the year. But no matter where you are, definitely shoot when the sun is low in the sky, if you have the chance. But as I said, it's not the be all and end all of a good photo. If the light isn't there, there are plenty of other 'tricks and techniques' the good photographer should have up their sleeve to still make an interesting picture.
My favourite photos are the fifth and the last one. Thanks for the great tips, Sean.
Glad the tips are useful 👍
The close-up of your face when talking is a bit unnerving, honestly.
@@goblowirt1792 Thanks for the feedback
The ones that I liked the most are the old lady on the rock, the old and new buildings with the bird, and the lady in the hat. They were the most original and interesting to me. The lady in the red gate is nice, but it was more predicatble.
Thanks, John. Really interesting to see which images everyone pick 👍
That’s why the street photographers take continuous photos. In limited time, they won’t miss that amazing moment. Interesting.
@@noodlepoodlegirl The better approach is to be purposeful when you take an image, rather than taking lots of images and just relying on luck.
You took a video of it. You could’ve taken any frame out of that you wanted. Stop acting like you’re some freaking wizard.
The image shown is a still photo from the camera beneath, not a frame grab from the video shot by the action camera mounted on top of it.
And that frame would be not in the same quality like the actual picture from the camera... Strange isn't it? 🤯
I was about to give up then I saw this video and everything made sense
🙂
Great stuff, Sean! Really appreciate the way you've explained everything.
I appreciate that, Uday! ✊
How about the permits? You take a picture of a man or a woman on the street and going to publish it, let´s say some of the social-platforms...instagram? Great tips though!!
Glad you enjoyed the tips. Every country and culture has different rules and customs with regards to photography in public places. Always best to make yourself familiar with those.
@SeanGallagherPhotographer Thank you. 👍
I’d say my favourite was the fifth shot, red painted wall, light and the women in it 👍🏻
Thanks, Adrian 👍
Sir, please make a video about portraits specially street portraits.
I'll keep that in mind for future videos!
@SeanGallagherPhotographer ok sir.
Brilliant. Thank you!
Thanks for watching 🙏
Now I learned another new tips! Thank you for the video.👍
Glad you found it helpful!
My fav is image 4 (look for contrast) . Actually I have been to this place. but didn't get a good picture 😂. at that time i didn't see much interesting things here. after watching this video i might be able to make a better and more interesting pictures in any place. 🙏
Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm glad the video has inspired you!
I can generate reasons for all of these images and attribute moods to them. So, they're not, for me, just irrelevant snaps - which a lot of 'Street' looks like to me. The first two don't particularly resonate, but the other four do - and quite strongly in the instances of three and four which have a certain dignity and poignancy. The sixth i think is very amusing... i just wish you had shown us the next frame where she tips the drink on her head (or is she communicating with the folly in the background by mimicking its form?). These four images all have a geometrical aspect i like - the triangles formed by each of the victim's arms - and the DR and colours of the last three really appeal. I'm also partial to incidental birds - little Easter Eggs in a frame - but i strongly suspect it was the same bird just keeping you under surveillance. Interesting to have you break them down and the 'rewind' format worked for me. Caveat - street and people aren't my thing, but i get the relevance. Best wishes from New Zealand. Cheers.
Thanks for your in-depth analysis! That's the beauty of photography that different images speak to different people. "i strongly suspect it was the same bird just keeping you under surveillance" That made me smile 🐦
@@SeanGallagherPhotographer Good - we like a smile!
@@SeanGallagherPhotographer I'm really curious to listen how first two images speaks to you. I really want to know. Btween my favmourite image is fifth. Fourth also i like.
@@mahidoes Well, the beauty of photography (and other forms of art) is that every photograph speaks differently to different people. I like the first image because of the interesting moment and the lighting. The second image works for me as there is a balance and surprising relationship between the smiling woman and the smiling lion. But again, this is my feeling. They may be my photos, but their interpretation is up to you too 🙂
@@SeanGallagherPhotographer Thank you very much for your reply. Specially in second image i benifited from what you say which i failed to see previously! Personally i feel if the DOF is more deep it would have made more impact. But again just my opinon.
Street photography simplified ! Good to hear the techniques and thought processes. You make me feel as if I can go out and get such lovely images ! They are all so perfectly balanced and I love the lady with the straw boater. Thanks
Thank you, Ann. That's the purpose, to inspire you to go out and capture similar moments 👍
I love this style of instruction. Realtime guidance and reviewing your thoughts and motivations. Thank you!
Glad you found it helpful, Jesse! Experimenting with this new style and hope to use it more in future videos.
Very thoughtful approach to composition. Terrific examples to explain the techniques with wonderful pictures.
Thanks for the kind words, really appreciate it!
That was thought provoking, thankyou Sean.
Glad you enjoyed it, John 👍
CAN I USE THIS TRICKS ON CANNON RP

Thank u for making this. i will get this to my class and students will analyze the situation
Thank you for watching and sharing with your students
Sometimes i go out with preconceptions - i either know precisely the image i'm after or i'm going to enter an environment where only one or two focal lengths are ever going to be appropriate. Most of the time, however, i just go prepared for what the World might present, and while this may make for what some people would think was a heavy carry, it does allow me to respond appropriately to any situation i find myself in (and it helps me stay fit!). So the thinking that informs this practice is that i have no desire to impose my values on the World, preferring instead to have the World impress itself on me and being responsive to that. One outcome is that i don't tend to take 'other people's photos'... but very often i rather wish i had!
Everyone has their own approach. That's the beauty of photography 👍
Thank you for taking the time to create this well crafted video especially for me being a new street photographer who is trying to master my craft in my eclectic art.
Keep practicing and experimenting! The more you shoot, the better you’ll get! 👍
