17:16 I gave purchased rancillio pro x to replace my sylvia and having trouble frothing the milk. Could it be not waiting long enough after the light stops flashing.
Good question. Yes that would be a good place to start. If you can give the machine around 30 minutes to heat up, it should give you a good amount of pressure for milk steaming.
A vacuum! Perhaps better than using compressed air to blow fine particles of coffee everywhere including one’s face, not that I’ve ever done that before.
Haha you’re not a barista until you’ve done that!
Thanks for the review....any idea if the boiler is stainless steel? Thanks!
Good question. According to their website the Kmart Compact Espresso has a “Die-cast, aluminium alloy boiler”
Whaaaaaaat😮 ?
Good vid
Thank you!
Was looking for a new espresso machine and found the Pro X selling for £1000 here in the UK which made the decision very easy for me. Would have been rude not to at that price. A great machine.
That’s awesome. I use ours everyday and love it!
what type of beans did you use, light, medium or dark roast; they did look either light or medium.
We used ONA coffee and their Aspen Blend, medium roast, great for milk based coffee as well as black.
I have a similar coffee maker, only the European version, but it does essentially the same thing. Do you think it makes sense to upgrade? Open porta filter+filter basket, puck screen...etc. Otherwise (in my opinion) it doesn't make bad coffee... or should I buy a better coffee maker :D btw great vid
Thanks for the comment! Good question…If you can find the correct size portafilter and non-pressurised basket upgrade that’s great because you’ll instantly see better results for a low cost… BUT if you’re ready to up your coffee-game and you have a budget for a higher spec machine, then go for it… it’s almost Christmas anyway! 🎅🏽
Nice video I could see where these products would help some people who want more than drip coffee at home but don't have a lot of money. Thanks for a fair review 🙂
Exactly! Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Why the heck does the Breville video say to hold all 3? Thanks for giving us the right info
Absolute pleasure 👍🏽
Pre-infusion / soft infusion helps.to.reduce chanelling through the puck resulting in a more even extraction which should taste better as you have described.
PS I have this machine in white too and I am very happy with it. Temperature stability for espresso shot after shot is great.
Awesome, thank you!
Great choice! 😉
With regards to the water spot resulting in having to wait for the steam to get back up, when I'm making an Americano, I don't need to steam any milk. If I make a second drink requiring steamed milk, by the time the 2nd shot has been pulled, steam is ready again.
We’ve noticed that too, it’s a great machine hey!? 🥳
I have the bambino plus (purchased 6 months from amazon) with a Baratza Encore Grinder, scale and all the bells and whistles, equipment. I also have a crema 54 mm bottomless porta filter/basket. My issue is I keep getting coffee spitting out of the bottom of porta filter all over the back of the machine and countertop when brewing single and/or double shot expresso. I tried the original porta filter that came with the machine as well, different grind size, same results. Any recommendations?
Sounds like a good setup! It could be the grind size is too fine, have you tried a coarser grind? The group head and shower-screen might also need a good clean, especially around the rubber seal that the portafilter sits against during brewing 👍🏽
I bought one 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it. I sometimes drink long blacks and all I do is when I turn the SPX on I also flick the jug on and use that water instead of faffing around with the water spout. I wish not having one was a option really. Great review BTW it really helped me decide👌
That’s great to hear! Thank you! To be honest, I’ve done exactly the same thing from time to time! Happy brewing! 😀
Good video man ! What beans did you use and how fresh were they ? Looking for a good recc9mendation of beans for pure espresso. Cheers (from cane toad land)
Thank you, much appreciated 👍🏽 We were using ONA coffee from Canberra. They have a great range of single origin coffee that’s perfect for espresso. Little Italy Coffee Roasters here in Sydney also have delicious coffees for espresso - the Que Linda blend and Columbian single origin are awesome! They’ll even ship it up to the Land of the Banana for you 🤙🏽
I would think they can get some proper industrial designers in. I hear Johnny Ive is available.
Perhaps. They manage to tick the minimalist box ✅
this machine ticks all the boxes... no design awards needed..
I just got mine this weekend, but the pressure gague reads at 4-5 bar, I think likely due to the transport issues you mentioned, the overpressure valve must have moved around, excited to get it working perfectly soon
Interesting! Maybe another solenoid or actuator issue?… Hopefully it’s an easy fix for you! 🙏
Aarghhh! There's a couple of flat washers and a felt washer/gasket under the impeller. These set the lower burr height and prevent coffee dust going into the motor respectively. You appear to have vacuumed them up.
Well spotted
You did better than the official video, thank you so much
Haha Thanks!!! 🙏
Hey, how are you? Are you using the MH3 portafilter? I start trying the same tool with 17g and 6 grind size, should I be trying just single shots with this settings or it would work fine for double shots?
We used a cheaper portafilter from Amazon (link in description below👇🏽) Yes, It’s fine for double shots, but if you’re splitting your shots into 2 cups, you might need slightly more coffee - 18-19g minimum would probably be better 👍🏽
I have the same machine but in black. It’s a consistent great workhorse.
They look so good in Black 👌🏽
Hi there!!, thanks great video I have now got a nice clean grinder .... question .. our grinder gets a caning at home 4-5 coffees per day and burrs are dull after a few years.... best option is to replace them? ... down to 4 or 5 for espresso ... used to be 10-12 for same ..cheers
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video! Good question, they may need replacing or the grinder might need recalibrating (a cheaper option by far!) so if you remove the top burr again, then pop off the steel handle you can adjust the location of the red dot either towards finer or coarser. Going towards finer will move the ‘grind range’ and give you more scope to dial in. So rather than 5 you might now pull good espresso shots at 7 or 8 or maybe even the original 10-12. This will be a good test to see if your burrs really do need replacing 👍🏽
Hi, great review, I recently purchased the Sage version and have to say that coming from a Krupps grinder.... I`m well chuffed, I read a comment somewhere else about someone moaning that the grinder loses its setting when unplugged, on page 14 of the official manual it states that the grinder can retain the current setting displayed in memory by pressing/holding down the timer knob, Ive tested this and it does appear to work, I also find that pre-ground coffee is a little to coarse for my liking.... even for a v60, the Krupps did an ok job but even with a v60 there were a small amount of fines left in my mug but that hasn`t been the case so far with the Sage smart pro..... seems to have a nice even grind for a conical burr.
Great review.
Thank you! 🙏
If people are comparing Cafe bought espresso to what is possible with this machine then I would suggest the machine would win hands down compared some of the excuses served up as espresso in many cafes these days. And I am talking about so called ‘boutique’ or specialist outlets. My hat goes off to those baristas who have been trained well, take their craft seriously and make some memorable coffees. But from my experience in Australia they seem to be a rarity. Anyway… i regularly pull shots that i would pay $6 for down here. I am not a barista but I like my coffee so i played with the machine settings and my brewing profile to find the sweet spot. I repeat the process with each different bean. Its all part of the fun, isn’t it?I use a Flair Pro.
👍🏽
I think my grinder motor broke. When bean is in, the grinder just won’t grind it although motor is running. When bean is removed, everything is able to move. Anyone had experienced this?
Have you checked that the grind size isn’t set to zero? Try adjusting the grinder to a coarser setting, this will make space for coffee to flow.
As a professional barista for 15 years, the Silvia Pro X is at the top of my shopping list in brushed steel colour. Great review. Thanks.
Thank you! You’ll love it, and they look great in brushed steel!
@Thesneakygrind Great review video mate! How would you compare the coffee that comes out of it compared to cafe quality i.e. its 95-99% of what you can get from any high street cafe like Starbucks or much better?
Thank you! Good question. It depends a lot on the beans you’re using and probably more on the quality of grinder you choose. But if you nail those choices, dial your espresso in and practice making coffee heaps then you should get something that’s as good if not better than a cafe made coffee 💪🏽
When you say good grinder, would something like an Eureka Mignon Zero be any good for the level
@@hash5191 yes perfect 👌🏽
I need some help i did the complete disassemble. After cleaning it started to clog, the machine will grind longer, but the ground dont get pushed trough the chute, the impeller looks good, everything seems fine but the impelle dont push the ground trough the chute as i said. The felt washer isnt there anymore after cleaning i broke it, but i dont think i need it. Anyone knows the issue ?
Sorry to hear this. As long as everything went back in the right way round, and in the correct order I can’t think of anything else that might clog the grinder unless a part of the washer got jammed in the chute? Or the impeller hasn’t sat in its location properly? Let us know how you go 👍🏽
the actual "zero point"on my machine after a couple of years of wear on the burrs,....is burr#4 and 3 on the display, This is where you can hear the motor note slightly change when running no beans. at that setting the coffee is very fine and pretty clumpy. I work backward from this known point.sorta 12-6 ish. Add bellows to clear a minimum 1g or more from the machine with a couple of puffs.
Thank you for this 👍🏽
We have had ours for 8 years or so now. I have just replaced it with a niche zero. The smart grinder is a great first grinder, easy to use, easy to care for, cheap, and can make tasty espresso. That being said there have been some roasts that it just cannot manage, lighter roasts in particular cant be ground fine enough without the motor seizing. If you have a preference for roasts on the darker side it will do the job but just know it will limit your options when it comes to some coffees.
Thank you…. Good feedback 👍🏽
Coolness 👍🏽☕️😎
The Dark arts 😂😂😂😂👍🏽☕️😎❤️ love that!!!
Thanks! 🙏
Great video 👍🏽☕️😎
Thank you 🙏
Does the portafilter fit the bambino
Yes 👍🏽
That was a surprisingly entertaining vid mate 👌👍 its made it look like a relatively simple job which i will have a ho at real soon. Thanksnfor sharing and entertaining me 😎 Is it not a good idea to guve all the parts a bit of a wash in dishwater?
Thanks Ben! Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏽 You could put them in a dishwasher or soak them in a machine cleaner/hot water mix, that would get rid of all the coffee oils but you’d want to make sure they’re 100% dry before putting them back into the grinder!
You can also buy cleaning pallets if you do not wish to do that
Cleaning pellets are an okay choice for a quick, light-duty clean when you’re time poor. We’re showing a deep clean in this video, essential maintenance and a great way to extend the life of the grinder 👍🏽
Can you please share the model of the bottomless porta filter?
No problem… Here is the link to the portafilter amzn.to/4bwqMI5 It’s an affiliate link and we get a small cut of any purchases that you make when you use it. We reinvest all of this back into the channel and really appreciate your support! 🙏

I’ve found this video to be the most helpful and informative out of the many Bambino Plus review videos on youtube, Kudos to you! When dialing in your espresso, do you aim for 18g in and 36g out in 30 seconds? And when specifically do you start the timer (when you press the double shot button, or when espresso first comes out?) Greatly appreciated!
Thank you! We’re stoked you enjoyed the video! 🙏 Yes, that’s the classic 1:2 ratio 18g of coffee in (dry weight) to 36g of coffee out (wet weight). The time will be dictated by your grind and the exact point you stop the shot when programming your machine. And yes, hit the timer at the same time you press the double-shot button. 👍🏽 Happy Brewing!
I've had this grinder for years. I never knew I should be dissatisfied with it until I entered the rabbit hole of espressso grinder reviews.
We think it’s a great grinder! 👍🏽
@@hotfroth I can't complain, except for the amount of coffee it makes me put through it.
Running one of these for my Breville dual boiler. I’ve got Campos’ house blend running 20.4 second grind time, internal grind setting 1, external grind setting 4. Works like a charm even after 2 years!
Awesome!
I've had this grinder for a week. Dialed in my settings to 5 on the upper burr and 6 for the grind size. I thought it was funny watching the guy try to use the timer to dose out the right amount of coffee. All you need to do is press and hold the start button with a small, 1-cup glass container and a pocket scale under the chute. Grind up to the desired weight and take note of the elapsed time (it counts up instead of down when you press and hold the button).
Thanks for that 👍🏽
Where did you get the spring loaded tamper?
That tamper is from Amazon.
@@hotfroth thanks 🙂 love the video 👍
Hi, great video! I just got mine and it's being a little of a learning curve for me coming from my old Krups. So glad you mention the machine error with the automatic shot dosing I thought mine was defective 😂 I will try to program it. Two questions: are u using whole or low fat milk? I'm guessing whole. And second, I'd like to learn using the bottomless porta filter but I don't have a grinder, which one do you recommend on the less that $200 US dlr range? Thanks ! I love the Aussie accent 😊!
Hi, thank you! 🙏… you’re right, we are using whole milk in the video. I just checked out Whole Latte Love and online coffee machine store in the US and the Breville Smart Grinder Pro is $199 !!! It’s a really great beginner grinder and has a wide range of settings. Here is the link. www.wholelattelove.com/collections/espresso-grinders/products/breville-bcg820bss-smart-grinder-pro
Thanks! I’ll check it out😊
Another Coffee geeky channel niceee! :) Welcome guys, glad to see you, would be good to have another point of view to this overly analyzed hobby :) Would you say Breville Smart Grinder Pro is a better suitable for first grinder compared to something like DF54? Thanks.
Thank you for the welcome! We’re hoping to bring some personality to the coffee party 🥳 The Breville is marketed for a range of coffee uses from espresso to filter coffee and has a hopper that gravity feeds the burrs on demand. The DF54 is what’s known as a dose grinder, it can hold a maximum of 50g with bellows fitted. It’s more than capable of grinding a range of beans but will be a lot more precise and retain very little to zero ground coffee each when compared to the Breville.
This is my spare while I wait on my df83v; I was struggling forever with the Barista Express in combination with the Smart Grinder Pro (I wanted an external for pour overs and it’s easier to clean IMO than one built into the Express), however I recently upgraded my entire suite with a Lelit, Weber 20g basket, paper filters and puck screen, and pulled a solid shot out of this contraption at grind setting 13. HOWEVER, in order for it to reflect the “espresso” range on the display, I had to adjust the burr range internally to its lowest point which surprisingly didn’t hit a zero point unlike the inbuilt grinder on the Barista Express, so out of the box I don’t think it’s calibrated towards espresso use. That being said, retention is quite terrible 😂.
Thank you! Yes once it’s dialled in the Smart Grinder is very a very capable little machine. The aftermarket bellows to clear the retained grounds might be a good investment though 😊
Did you adjust the inside burr with the final setting?
Yes we did but only a few weeks later when we couldn’t dial-down our espresso fine enough! There might be a future video on that 👍🏽
@@hotfrothcan you do an updated video for this one?
