A Viking Age cross shaft in Lancashire tells the Norse story of the hero Sigurd and the dragon Fafnir. the film and 3D model ( skfb.ly/6qvGT ) were made in 2017. I've recently finished making 3D models of the other 10th century stones in England that seem to illustrate episodes from the same tale ( skfb.ly/oQFSM ).
Viking Graffiti
Просмотров 2122 года назад
Film made during PhD research at Durham University Department of Archaeology of a unique 1100-year-old carving inside the church in Skipwith, North Yorkshire. The style looks more like a 21st century graphic novel than other early-medieval stone sculpture. The 3D image of the carving is at skfb.ly/ornBV.

QUALITY CONTENT. I can't thank you enough.
Great video Roger! We have been looking at the same stone with the Skipwith Heritage Group using photogrammetry too. Don't think I can stuff in RUclips. But happy to send to you for a look. Hope this isn't rude but are you related to the sadly missed Jim Lang?
Thanks - much appreciated & sorry for the delay in replying. Yes I'd like to see your work on the stone. I've got another idea about researching the piece & will send details to your community archaeology address when I get back to the UK. Re. Jim Lang, no, his work on hogbacks was awesome and I would like to be able to claim a connection but my branch of Langs were North Devon farm workers before migrating to South Wales in the 19th century, so I guess even Turi King couldn't find a link there:)
Sweet video deconstruction & comparative of the Skipwith carving! Your Sketchfab scanned models are terrific! Did you make "restored" versions of the hogbacks that would show them without the wear & tear of time? And I'm wondering where I can download the Brompton 17 model? I'm trying to recreate or 3D print one on a smaller scale as a box. Let me know, thanks!
Thanks very much! No I haven't made any tidied up versions yet, though am planning on doing something similar with another piece from the period. I can't release the Brompton models, as I am working on a project with Durham Cathedral Museum & Brompton Church to model all of the Brompton pieces (half of them were bought by the Cathedral shortly after their discovery in the 19th century. - the other half are still in Brompton). I am at roger.lang@durham.ac.uk if you want to know more.
