Adventure Road
Новая Зеландия
Добавлен 27 фев 2021
We're a family that likes exploring the road less traveled in our own back yard, New Zealand. Anything with a bit of extra adventure is exactly what we're after.
North Island by caravan
This caravan is currently for sale: www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/caravans-motorhomes/caravans/21-24-ft/listing/4948658725?ed=true&bof=xfBchtCw
After being inspired by van life during lockdown we finally bought a caravan. After owning it for nearly 2 years we decided to take a trip of a lifetime, taking four weeks to tour of the North Island with two of those weeks in Northland.
We started from Christchurch and this is our itinerary:
1. Momorangi Bay, near Picton (DOC campground)
2. Levin (Family)
3. Clive (Friends)
4. Tihoi, near Taupō (Family)
5. Tauranga (NZMCA Park)
6. Shakespare Park, Auckland (Auckland Regional Park)
7. Uretiti Beach (DOC campground)
8. Otamure Bay (DOC campground)
9. Puriri Bay ...

A weekend adventure into the St James
Просмотров 6177 месяцев назад
We have a tradition in our family of 1 on 1 getaways with the kids to mark their birthdays, odd years with Dad and even with Mum. This time it was Coen and me. We devised an adventure involving 4WDing and biking. We didn't get to where we wanted to go, but we still had a good time.

We spend the weekend freedom camping at Lake Camp, in the Hakatere Conservation Park, New Zealand. It’s just a short drive away from our hometown, Christchurch. We explore the local area and climb Mt Sunday. Mt Sunday was the set location for Edoras in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Camp location: goo.gl/maps/CDxySSD2nTuBWTSt6

We loaded up our new caravan to take away on NZ's newest public holiday, Matariki. We spent one night in Ashburton, then the next two at Lake Tekapo. We enjoyed the winter wilderness that Lake Tekapo offered along with iceskating and hot pools. A generally good time!
Sign of the Packhorse

We did an over night tramp to the Packhorse Hut (Sign of the Packhorse) from the Kaituna Valley side. We had amazing views of Lyttelton Harbour, the Port Hills, Canterbury Plains and Southern Alps.

We took a day trip out on Banks Peninsula to visit my parents. We did the Little River - Pigeon Bay - Port Levy loop before returning to Christchurch. Great scenery, coffee, food.
New Zealand's South Island by campervan - 2020
Просмотров 54 тыс.3 года назад
We got stuck in our own country because of the COVID-19 border restrictions. In response, Tourism Holdings Limited offered all of their camper vans to hire at a cut rate to help kick start the domestic tourism industry. So we got a 6 berth Britz. We took the fam on an epic two week tour of the lower half of New Zealand's South Island. If you're a kiwi, planning to do this in your own country, t...
The Cobb
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.3 года назад
We took a day trip from Tākaka to the Cobb Valley. We visited the hydro power station, the dam, the reservoir and the Trilobite Hut. This was a great road, in the back blocks with some incredible scenery. A must do for any overlanding itinerary in NZ
Braeburn Track
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.3 года назад
Driving north out of Murchison, we took a turn down Mangles Valley Road, which lead us towards the Braeburn Track, then onto Lake Rotoroa. It's a lovely drive, initially through farmland, then native bush and finally down to the Lake. 4WD not essential, but it helped make it comfortable.
Maruia Saddle Road
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.3 года назад
We took the long way today, to take more of an adventure road, Maruia Saddle Road, then through to Murchison. It's a great track through native bush, many fords through streams, the out through lush farm land. We end up in Murchison for a chilled our afternoon and evening, settling down for the night in preparation for our next adventure.

Gr8 narration & music Bro:-)
Awesome NI adventure. Hopefully our next journey up that way we will be able to spend a similar amount of time looking around. Great video.
Are you from the SI? It's surprising how different the islands are. If you're used to one, there's so much to enjoy in the other.
Holy moly, the end of this hit like a mini episode of Mt Hutt Rescue! Glad the passerby was able to help and fetch patrol, and I hope Ollie is recovering well! ❤️🩹
@@krissp8712 thanks Chris. I checked in with Ollie last night and he’s recovering well, but slowly. Always have to be careful up there!
Love the narration!! I'm thinking of getting a season pass for 2025 when they come up in October myself and this is inspiring!
@@krissp8712 thanks mate. I tried a different approach with that one. Hutt is definitely a good option if you live nearby. The only thing holding us back from getting a ‘25 pass at the moment is the idea of trying some of the other fields.
Heck. Sorry to hear that
i hope the young fellow is recovery will and doing what the drs advise take it easy for 8 weeks let the spine fully recover it’s not long in the span of your life
@@lukeduke3001 he’s doing well. Back at his home in Tauranga now. Wise words from you about his recovery. I’ll pass it on
@@AdventureRoadNZ good to read the recovery is going well,, 46 years ago I broke my neck and been paralyzed from my neck down,, that was why the story caught my attention,,cheers
Jeez you know youre old when you can remember them building that bridge..........
EPIC. I bet those were the days!
Probably went up early 1980s?
Really enjoyed both videos. Brought back a few memories, particularly the one showing the Rainbow Station. My Dad worked for NZED (60's and early 70's) building the high tension lines and as kids took us up into the Rainbow, when the only 4 wheel drive vehicles were Landrovers! Hard seats and bumpy as. It was a real privilege to grow up in my early years in this spectacular place - real middle earth. I have a deep love for this area with the peace and serenity of the mountains and valleys. Thank you for sharing.
@@denisegandy1183 I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m also glad your dad helped install those Lines. It really opened up our country. As a bonus it’s given us a few hundred kms of 4WD track that wouldn’t otherwise exist.
Just awesome scenery
Had some great holidays and neat memories of Totaranui over the years. Nice video👌
Been to WA and south island of NZ. Seriously NZ scenery is way much more beautiful than WA.
Hlw, very beautiful videos 😊❤
I felt your worry and concern prior to traversing the shingle at Birdlings Flat! we were out there last weekend and I was reluctant to give it ago!
Nothing worse than getting stuck and having no way to get out!
Good to see dad and sons bonding
Great video guys, I grew up in Christchurch and have many fond memories of camping with my family. Happy birthday Coen, I hope you had a wonderful time!
Great video, good luck for the 2024 season
You’re absolutely right. We’ve been blown away both by the beauty of your country and the high standards of facilities and campgrounds all over.
"Promosm" 👌
CARRY $50 cash . For anyone who gets stuck .
Great info, great vid 👍👍👍
Thanks! We're massive fans of you guys so it means a lot. It was around that time that we started watching your channel and we've since taken the plunge and got a caravan ourselves. Have a great time in NZ. Shout out if you want any other pointers. Cannot recommend Mt Hutt enough for skiing/snowboarding if that's on the menu.
Late comment. Just checking in to see how Starlink is going? Do you use Starlink at home with the same plan or how do you have that setup for continuity?
Just had it going this summer. Still works really well. Speed is wild, even out in the wop wops. The only slightly annoying thing if you are video calling is it can drop for 5-10 seconds every 10 minutes or so as it drops one sattelite but hasn't yet picked up the next one. The slightly more tricky thing to manage is power. We've got a pretty old house battery in the caravan, and a 150w solar panel on the caravan roof. If the sun is shining, no worries. But if it's a bit cloudy, or the sun is down, it struggles. When running of the caravan battery, I use a 300w inverter. I've got a 100ah lithium battery in the car, which I can charge off a couple of other solar panels. That was helpful to have extra power to run it when off grid. But it still struggled if the sun didn't shine and we weren't driving to charge it up again. I've seen some vids on RUclips where people have modified their Starlink to run off 12v. If you're on the road full time, I recon that would be worth it. I don't use Starlink at home, $199 per month for Starlink vs $89 a month for fibre. So I just buy Starlink for a month at a time when I know I'm going to be using it a bit or going somewhere where there's no cell reception.
Truly magic!
Great spot, I camped almost exactly were you guys did last weekend, it was magic, stunning views and very pieceful
Crossed it at the weekend in the MG ZS EV 2WD - an exciting drive. BEWARE, all it takes is a tree down, a small slip, or a washed out ford and you're reversing 500m for a turn around point.
Hello! Thank you for your video; I really appreciate it. Currently, I am working remotely, primarily engaged in video calls and screen sharing. My wife and I are planning a road trip across New Zealand with an RV. I'm curious if you believe it's feasible to maintain a stable internet connection throughout NZ so that I can continue working while on the trip even in the remotest areas. Thank you very much for your help, I couldn't find any convincing answer on Google :D.
Hi, I would say yes you can. We used it in some very remote places and it worked perfectly. We do have some valleys with steep hills that might affect the speed a little. But everywhere we have used it we've been getting 200mps+ down and 20mps+ up. It occasionally glitches, momentarily, on video calls. But otherwise, really good quality. There's some nice videos out there where folks have converted their Starlink to 12v and mounted the dish permanently to the roof. Would be worthwhile looking into if you're going to be on the road for 3 months +
hey thanks for the video. having a map of your drive would be nice - keen to take my car for a spin as well - and youtube vids like this is a great way of making sure i know the state of the roads etc.
Really informative and inspiring video, thank you.
Thank you what awesome fun you all have A MA zing!! Now do you have an extra battery for your fridge ....I know we can get chilly bins now with freezer areas but the fridge looks cool so where IN NZ did you get that and what's the brand....the induction plate looks great....maybe some solar panels would Help ? ..... great seeing your ideas ....and set up you are all very organized and that's the key ...many hate camping but they don't get the fact organizing at least on camps makes the experience great..... Cheers ....love your work and yr partner catches some very special shots maybe a photographer at heart.... thanks again.... Bless u all....
Thanks! I got the fridge from Trade Depot. But if I was to do it again, I would get a 12V fridge. Having to run off an inverter is mildly annoying. You're right about organisation. If you are taking non-camping folk camping, ease them in with a touch of luxury!
This is the fridge I would buy if I was doing it again: sunnytech.co.nz/store/default/product-details/140/75/0/0
EXCELLENT..SO WHERE DID YOU GO THEN ..DID YOU CAMP AT THE LAKE OR GO ON WHERE ?
Hey, we were enroute to Golden Bay. Though we have camped at St Arnaud before, but not Lake Rotoroa. St Arnaud is a great place to stay or camp.
Hello from Colorado. Loved the video. Just beautiful area, I had to look up where it was…lol. The kids were so sweet. Love my XC90. Cheers!
What was that old advertising catch-phrase? "Don't leave home until you have see the country"? New Zealand has the best scenery in the world so why go elsewhere?
100% Plenty to see in our own backyard!
How was the Starlink performance on your trip..I ask as I watched your previous video of you setting it up..thanks in advance ✌️
I didn't use it on my Lake Camp trip. However, I'm planning on using it on my next. So keep an eye out for my next video, might include a bit about that.
Looks like an amazing place to be, great shots 😊
❤
It’s easier to take good shots with such an amazing GoPro!
Well done! Lovely place to spend some awesome time!!! Great video as well!
Thanks! It is a great spot. It feels quite undiscovered too.
I'd love to spend some time out there, might need to leave the dog behind one trip
Yeah it’s a great spot. But yep, no dogs allowed.
@@AdventureRoadNZ parents are in Rolleston so I think we'll be dropping off the dog and carrying on out there for a couple of nights. Always good to get the paddleboard out
Looks awesome, thank you so much for sharing. We are in Timaru, and always on the lookout for places, not too far away, depending on how much time we have <3
No worries. I’d highly recommend for anyone in the Canty area to check it out.
great review of starlink
We just ordered ours pretty hyped to get decent speeds. Cheers from waiuku
Just did this track today👍 Your video is really helpful navigating the bossu road. What navigation app do you use for your adventures? Cheers!
Great to hear. 4x4 Explore is the best for planning. When I’m actually on the road I use the TopoGPS App with the maps preloaded since most places I go don’t have reception. Did you cross at Birdlings Flat? How was that?
@@AdventureRoadNZ The shingles really slowed me down and had that sinking feeling that you’re about to get stuck. It was my first time doing any offroad here in NZ. Glad we made it. Thanks for the advice. Looking forward for more videos.
Wow! What a beautiful drive! Gotta love the NZ forests. Shout out to your wife for her camera skills too.Assume she helps?🤔😊
Yep, she’s a wiz on the camera
What a glorious trip you did! It was obviously meant to be! Your whanau is adorable! Thanks for sharing. And yes you're very blessed to live in the most beautiful country on this planet! (Had a 3 week taster trip in 2019.Left a huge part of my heart there.saving my pennies to go again).🤗
Beautiful drive! Thanks for sharing.(Have noted that a lot of your music, not just here is rather fab! If you have the time,or indeed the inclination, could you post the music you use? Thanking you kindly.) Arohanui from the UK.🤗
Glad you enjoyed it. I'll see if I can track down the tracks I used.
Be still my heart! How cute was the adorable penguin!🐧
Very helpful video - thanks. Did you work out a successful way of powering the modem etc while away in your van? Do you still use the dish mount they supplied or do you think it could fit to a wind up fitting on van roof?
I have a second 100 ah AGM battery in my car which charges off the alternator when driving. I can also charge this from a portable 140w solar panel. I connect a 300w inverter to the battery to get 240v. I can either plug starlink into that directly, or plug the caravan into the inverter, then plug star link into that. Startlink doesn't actually use that much power so solar + a decent battery with a small inverter is enough.
My mates traversed molesworth on there Harleys would you believe it aye
That’s a good effort. I bet they loved it
Cheers for that mate. Always hard to access info pertinent to NZ. The initial ordering hardware and is done through the Starlink website I presume? I am a bit more confident committing to this as I tiki tour around NZ and work seasonally. Appreciate the post.
No worries. I’ll hopefully post a follow soon of using it on the West Coast. Yep, you order the hardware through the website. At the moment it’s half price www.starlink.com/
really cool looking scenery, awesome river. Later. T.E. Bryceville Fl.
we will be there new years eve till the 2 Jan...do we need to pre book to the pools?
Wouldn’t be a silly idea to prebook. I would imagine it’ll be quite busy.
Hi, so you can stay at the lake tekapo springs for $10 a night per van or per person? thanks
No. We stayed at the NZMCA park. You need to be NZMCA members with to stay. $5 per adult per night. No bookings. Hope that helps
@@AdventureRoadNZ thanks, yes we are nzmca members.
Thank you so much for sharing!
