AWESOME! That drag sound is like music to my ears! New sub from my channel to yours!
Tasty fish. Never have jigged for them though, looks fun
also, you made a big mistake which can cause a major issue, (18:58)the screw that holds the hold plate to the shaft, the washer is not sitting on the nipple you see when you turn it it's not straight, so now you will have resistance on the hold plate when reeling and you are wearing out the hold plate. and that screw is not tightened properly. its frustrating watching people do repair or upgrade videos and do things completely incorrect so now you gave bad information.
The problem isn't the drag washers,(unless it's a very old model all newer round cold waters have carbon fiber drags) the problem is the shaft gets scarred, so it won't allow the drag plates move on the shaft, the real fix for this is to take a half round small file and lightly file those scarred areas smooth, clean the drag washers and you're good to go. also just put the handle on the shaft when removing the hold plate screw no need for an adjustable wrench. another note is when you are removing the drag stack just flip the shaft and gear over and dump them, they will lay in the correct orientation, so you don't have to take them out individually. also, the spring for the clutch was in the correct position the way you put it back make the clutch engage with a longer handle turn.
Brain surgery ha ha.
Red loctite still comes apart just fine. Red is always recommended in almost everything that needs loctite. Blue doesn’t do much
what a painful video, however you did a great job explaining. are the newer cold water reels better now?
That is my question as well. Just purchased these for Dipsys. Didn’t know they needed additional work at he onset. Hopefully there is a place to send them in to have this done
so many things he did wrong on this reel.
Hey great video but I noticed a couple things.. the tab on the plate goes into the spring mid way along it when it is seated in the slot. Also the white plastic washer that you discarded on the back of the brass drag gear is supposed to be there and is not part of the drag…. Great upgrade. I think I’ll do it when the drags on my reels start losing their range.
Thanks! Yeah a couple other people noticed the spring as well, looked out of place inside the spring, but turns out it's correct. So far my reels have been performing well without the white washer. Either way, great upgrade like you said. Thanks for watching!
Where do you guys walk out from? Does the shoreline freeze every year? I keep hearing that Superior doesn't freeze but continue to see ice fishing videos like this every year.
I’m pretty mechanically inclined but after that video it’s just easier and cheaper to rerun it and get to Daiwa sealine 40sl 3b and call it a day. Good drag review on that so sorry okuma you had a shot
Yeah it's unfortunate that for $120-140 you don't get a well-performing drag
Cual es el espesor de las arandelas nuevas
Can I use this reel for crabbing? For example can I cast this from the surf with crabbing snares
Theoretically you could, however I'd go with a more traditional baitcaster if you want to cast.
I discovered a feature on these reels that cause the drag issues you mention. Near the reel logo is a toggle button to toggle the clicker mode on or off. Turning it off gives completely smooth drag and complete silence with reeling, turning it on introduces the loud click while reeling and tighter drag. In your video you had this toggled on which is why you hear the click. Try turning it off and seeing if you still needed to upgrade washers. I bought 2 reels and noticed 1 clicked and 1 didn’t which is how I found the button. This buttin / feature is not mentioned anywhere in the minimal docs that come with the reel which is really stupid of Okuma.
Thanks for the insight! I've noticed that the clicker adds a little bit of drag but even with it off, the drag upgrade offers a big improvement. Even if the drag was smooth with the clicker off, it wouldn't be good enough because with a trolling reel most of the time the clicker is going to be on to hear the strike. With big salmon, there isn't always enough time to get the clicker off before they start running.
just about every line counter reel has a clicker, did you think the button was there for no reason?
@@OnlyFins86have been fishing spinners for years but only recently started trolling off boats with my first bait caster with the line counter. I didn’t know it was a thing. Clicker is a great feature but does introduce considerable drag to free spool, just wish there was some basic documentation considering it’s not standard on all fishing rods
@@BritzFishing good call yep, sounds like a significant upgrade either way!
@@OnlyFins86 also it didn’t look like a button to me, more like a silver bolt, I was surprised when it moved ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Were can i get the upgrade drag i look up for drag masters and no resolts
Link is in the description, thanks for watching!
If the reel is left hand retrieve, do the screws unscrew to the same direction ( lefty loosey) ??? I adk because the little screw on the plate that you have to hold with an adjustable wrench I stripped it trying to loosen it. It wouldn't move at all loosening it to the left (counter clockwise)
I think the only opposite screw in a lefty is the drag star bushing. Other than that, I'm guessing all the other screws have regular threads.
It is possible that the one you mentioned is the opposite as well so it doesn't loosen under normal operating conditions
@@BritzFishingyou should have specified that dude. Now my screw is stripped. You need to remember that there are people following your tutorial to the T. Now my reel is ruined.
@@Teango I'm sorry to hear about your reel but it's tough to think of everything when making a video. When it comes to jobs like this, some common sense is required as well. If the screw isn't coming loose, don't apply excessive force. Stop and think about what may need to be done differently. If you want to fix it, they make tools to remove stripped screws.
@@BritzFishing the tutorial is great . It's just that little things like that can ruin the reel if they don't get clarified. For future reference and for anybody out there that has this same real in left hand retrieve configuration, be aware that that particular screw loosens clockwise ( also known as righty righty).
Love your initial demonstration. That was exactly my issue with these reels.
No drag grease?
Not needed, works great without it. I've heard the stock grease locks up in the cold
@@BritzFishing it does not lock up
Daiwa Sealine.
Are the only level wind that actually uses carbon fiber washers
What brand of braided line are you using on these rods ?
I typically run 50lb Power Pro
Thanks for showing this. I just ordered the upgrades to both my reels
You'll love them!
Were you order them
That's bull I'm taking mine back.
Great Video !!! Can I send my reels to you and pay u to trick them out ?
I'd consider it!
Sorry for the late response
Great strike for sure😊 I fish Lake Huron and Georgian Bay for some big salmon, I get some nice catches n video as well Cheers 🎣🇨🇦🎥
Sweet! Always fun
I agree with what Denise Bister said in the comments - but only because when I opened my reel, that piece was in the middle of the spring, just like it was when you opened it. Haven't seen the schematic from Okuma or Tuna Reels yet, but now I'm very curious. Otherwise this video is A+. Thank you.
I must've just screwed it up but I think both ways work well. Haven't had any issues with mine
Nice fish what a monster!
They're always a fun fight!
On stock drag give the reel a quarter turn it will accept the adjustments.
Yeah that's one solution but with big kings it's nice to have drag changes take effect immediately
I thought opener was this Saturday?
This was from last year's opener
@@BritzFishing nice fish!

Great job on the quick release
Thank you! Lives to swim another day for someone else to catch!
Dang that reel is noisy. Someone installed a baseball card in it. I'm looking for a counter reel that works well and is not so noisy.
The reals have a clicker you can turn on and off
@@bchecker6307 yep it is just loud. Supposedly it could possibly attract fish apparently
@paulvanhorn2177 🤣🤣 what?! Lol the clicker on a reel has zero to do with attracting fish... can't tell if you were serious or jokeing.
Bait clickers let you know when you have a strike, assuming drag is set appropriately. This matters when running 9 rods and can't have an eye on them all.
The little spring that you lost It happened to me twice. Also the way it was when you opened it up with the piece going through spring and you said thats not the way it goes confused me. Because if you order that spring throughTuna's Reel Troubles the spring in the pictures they have show the metal swing arm piece going through spring. Is your way better?
I didn't notice that but seems to work pretty good the way I put it. I think both ways will work well
I have these Coldwater reels for my wire divers. These junk drags significantly contributed to me severely damaging the wire on both rods. I'm disappointed in my Okuma Coldwaters.
Good upgrade, but a better solution is to buy Penn Squalls. Their drag is smooth as silk, but they are double the price of the Okuma's. I think their line capacity might be slightly larger as well.
No Line Counter ......
21 lb chinook in 3 mins! That’s impressive. Crazy the power they have. I’ve had 25 minute fights and it is crazy😎
I cut out some of the longer dead time but yeah pretty short fight. Those longer fights are fun though!
𝕡𝐫o𝕄o𝔰𝓶 😏
awesome fish. We have a lot of fun at the end getting them in the net sometimes too!
Thanks man! Yeah sometimes it's tough to handline a 12ft dipsy leader and net 20lbs+ of fish at the the same time lol
With all the fish you've been pulling in out there, I would have guessed your net game was getting good 😉
Rookie mistake!!! 😂
I’m going to start using my downriggers as rod holders for dipsys on 0 I run one at 3 one at one each side Seems downriggers aren’t getting the bites like they use to
Yeah it's tough to beat a Dipsy! They have a lot of movement up and down as the waves pulse your speed. I typically run mine on a 1 and 3 which works pretty well. The 1 gets it away from the boat slightly and may help.
She was a fighter!
Have those arms recovered yet?
What harbor you fishing out of
Sturgeon Bay
What a cutie
Thanks for the video. I ordered the drag washers and did the replacement today. My original drag had completely seized. The drag works much better now. The video was good though I could have used a little more description on which assembly washer went where. You did show them but I failed to notice a couple washers during my disassembly and it took me multiple views of your video to figure out where they went. Not sure I ever really understood the warped washers under the star wheel. I was really glad to have your video as a resource; I would never have tried this without it.
Glad it was helpful! I have some useful info on the warped washer config in the video description, let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks for taking time to do this. Orders a 153 just today will see how it does on drag.
Thanks for watching! Let me know how you like the upgrade if you choose that route. I'd highly recommend it because the reel will perform like a much more expensive one, just for $13.
@@BritzFishing I will try it out first then definitely do upgrade to it and the daiwa that comes with it. They will be my walleye rods
