Winging in Melbourne's BIG waves 🌊
Finally got to Drone in these conditions at Western Port Bay near Melbourne! This is Tom Saunders Winging in overhead height waves. Wind is cross offshore. Watch as he used the wing to get out the back and onto some massive rollers! This is what wing foiling in big surf is all about. Wind at times was light and then gusty and strong. Tom had to pump up onto a foil to start.
Let me know in the comment what you think. I’m also working on refining the drone skills as I get back into it.
You can check Tom out at poseidonsports.com.au

Jumped on my mate's Fliteboard, this is only my second go on it. Tried to pull off a few footswitches while being on foil. Tried to go fast as I could, got to speed 9, and got too scared...it goes to speed 20! This feels like riding my wing foil while on a wave. So much fun! 0:00 Cruising 1:01 Footswitches 1:23 Speed Run 1:53 Outro Follow me on Instagram: wingfoillife

Freestyle Wing Foiling - Leigh Thorne | Skill, Speed & Waves

Sunset session at Chelsea (Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne, Australia) with Leigh Thorne. Watch as he rides bay waves switch and regular. Switches feet on waves, heel side & toe side tacks. Also does some 360's and backwinding the wing. Practicing jibing onto a wave and putting the wing straight into a luffed-out position, which works well for winging into bigger waves. Hope you enjoy the footage! ...

Coming up to a year of Wing Foiling and we are now able to land tacks and sometimes we can do Alan Cadiz's Starfish when it's really windy, which you will see in this video. Wing Foiling Into The Surf

Video features Tom Saunders at Shoreham near Melbourne. As we are improving our Wing Foiling we are venturing into larger surf conditions. Wind was 20kts and cross onshore which made these conditions particularly challenging, as it was pushing you right into the white water. There was some big wipeouts and ripped wings! It's truly an awesome feeling to wing out the back and then ride the waves ...

What Is Wing Foiling? (Wing Surfing)
Great help but please remove the music or get some lav mics, its a little hard to understand. :)
tell me please I am a begginer i bought my equipment for later I am having lessons to a watersports school and i will also rent a board with a foil later....My foil is cabrinha with 90cm base kit and 1300 front wing x series What's your opinion? I am 60 kilos
Thank you for this video! I have a question for you: I kiteboard, surf, and wakeboard, but I've yet to wing, and my wife is a complete novice/beginner (no watersport experience). I'm trying to figure out a setup that will work for both of us to learn on. I know it's not ideal, but I'm trying to save some money. I'm 6'0 190lbs (86kg) and she is 5'4" 120lbs (55kg)... This is the setup I have in mind: Board 90L, Foil 72-75, Front wing 1850, wing 5.0... Conditions at our spot are deep water and wind 10-20 knots. Thank you in advance
Awesome skills by both rider and pilot, that looks so fun!
Nice video. Love the commentary. Keep it up!
Great commentary, some good little gems in there about tacking and starting to wave ride, nice
Great video! What board, wing and foil?
Very nice footage….and the comments are working, as a person who is just getting into it it provides insight. What board is Tom riding? I only ask because I’m in the market for my first foil board and the longer more narrow profile is looking like a good choice.
Glad you enjoy the content. I’ll do some more with commentary. Hit up Tom at poseidonsports.com.au and he can give exact board info.
What board is that??
Commentary is good 👍 Just starting out wing foiling.
Great stuff 🏄♂️🏄♂️🤙😎
Imagine living on mornington peninsula and someone saying you live in Melbourne. Awesome video though.
Haha yeah, but I get lots of people watching overseas that only really know ‘Melbourne’
Awesome work boys, great riding, and you know the drone work is epic in 20 knots when you have to run to stop your drone blowing away after you land it, nice
Those are some big waves!
Love the long edits
Great vid , what a brilliant spot.
Beautiful !! Love the commentary. Keep up the good work guys.
I bloody love the bay, it has so many moods and you are absolutely right be it with the wing or with the paddle you can now bay surf down here that looks like an awesome session
Tom (not Tim, sorry)
😂
Nice work Nick, Tim and PJ
Great riding🔥🤙 funny- I recently had sent a friend the slo mo Johnny Heineken ClayIsland vid and said, “here is the manual.” 😆
oh yeah for sure. I studied and practiced his footswitch style and now it's easy to switch in the waves. He is a true master.
I think the nice bit at the end without the commentary gave it nice balance
Great video! What was the wind direction on that day?. How many knots. Looked like really great conditions. Also if I may ask, what equipment did you use. Wing and foil size?
Westerly at about 15-20 knots. Much lighter in close as shielded by the cliff. Details of equipment in the description
It is magic out there
Awesome clip gents, love the commentary
Nice foiling guys! Was a awesome 😎 pleasure filming you both at such a beautiful location
Yeahhhh Drone Pilot Pete 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Cardboard box loosely bundled
Excellent orientation!
Does the orientation of the nut matter? Seems either direction works, but i did the opposite from your orientation because it felt more secured and stable
Upon further analysis, i found the screw gets more threads the other way, so even though it’s slightly less stable in the slot, the screw makes way more thread connections in the nut, so I flipped. Now matching the video method.
That’s why the stabilizer looked familiar yesterday when I got the foil from you in Cabrillo. I watched this video few days ago.
Агонь конечно, купил себе. Такое впечатление, что в Строгино катают)
I'm not sure a short mast is the way to go for beginners, you have less margin for error with a short mast, and if you do get a short mast, it wont be long before you then have to buy another mast that's longer.
Crap, I folded my windows on my brand new wing before I saw this. Assume it's ok as a once off and not going to permanently damage?
Wear a mask! Carbon dust is very bad for your lungs! Thanks for the vid.
um, YA slingshot, why don't ur foils come with mounting hardware. My local shop had an axis mounting kit, looks like the track nuts r all the same for the 90mm rail mounting system tho
Great video and thanks! I'm a 6'1, 195lb, 50 year old novice. Thoughts?
Thanks so much for posting! I'm getting ready to chop three inches off each side of my ha1525. Hope it goes well! No dotted lines on that one.
im thinking of chopping 1125 HA - How did it go and do you have any recommendations?
(just wondering, what happened to the music that came with old windsurf video's, like Pennywise or Foo fighters. Who wants to listen to the chit you delivered with this pretty awesome drone footage. It's an insult to riders in the clip, dude. Keep this music for Asian airport lobby's please)
Thanks for the info! Only thing I'm wondering about is the height of the mast. I'm a total beginner so correct me if I'm wrong but I have a pretty high mast and am happy with that because the most annoying crashes so far have been when the foil escapes the water. So I'm really happy that I have a long mast so I have more area to play with. Sometimes I fly accidentally a bit too high for my comfort but instead of crashing, I just shift weight on the front foot and nicely go lower again. So I thought lower mast is only beneficial for shallow water and actually is more suitable for more advanced learners?
Hey friend. Great video. Thanks. What size wing do you think would be good to practice on a SUP and transition to a foil? I'm 5'11 70kg.
Thanks for your video. Today Is first day I work in this fields.
It looks like CF1200 in the front
I think I had the HS1550 front wing on in this video...
Perfect explanation. Beautiful. I’ll try the grinder to save time because I don’t have much of that commodity but this really gives me the info i need
May I ask where is this? Is it near Melbourne
Yeah, Melbourne man. Just off the suburb of Chelsea
Would this be considered low or high aspect? Looks to be low? Thanks
The front foil that I used in this video is the Axis 920. It's a low aspect wing. This was when I was still learning to foil properly, I use different foils now
@@wingfoillife3901 sweet, i got a 1900 to learn, and one day hope to buy a full carbon Axis or Armstrong ;) with smaller front wing of course.
Hi guys, great vid thank you! One question still: What do you think about inflatable boards? Do they make any sense? I live some 500km away from the mediterranean and transporting a smaller package by car would help a lot - but only if they are stable enough and make sense... Would really be happy about a reply on this! Thank you all so much!
Hi Michael, I haven't seen many people use them but they do work! If it gets you on the water and on foil then it's probably worth it!
I'm happy with my inflatable. It's 120kg buoyancy and I'm 65kg so the board is big but I'm damn happy with the extra buoyancy and stability. I think I want to switch to a small hard board later but for now I'm very pleased with the stable high buoyancy inflatable. It's a bit harder in chop (more area that gets smashed) and it's a bit more sticky to the water but totally fine. Had the pleasure to be able to try friend's boards, one 70 kg and one 35 kg. Both hard boards. I was able to foil both behind the dinghy but mine was definitely most suitable for beginners (it's hard with the wing!). The advanced guy was surprised that it reacts well. So if space is an issue, I'd go for the inflatable until you're so advanced that you only need/want a tiny board :) I do have to say I'm a total beginner (can foil behind a dinghy now, and yesterday first time foiling with wing),but still I hope this info helps you.
Sunbeam Airlines approves this message. Good on ya Rama
Great video and such inspirational foiling. Thanks for sharing - I'm sharing your video with all the people who ask me "wing WHAT??" to help them imagine what we do with this sport. Way better than sharing a video of me crashing repeatedly into a freezing cold lake :)
Amazing!! So smooth!
Drone pilot was good too... I see a number of these videos... Great riders, music and nothing else... I like a bit of over dubbing to learn from failures... I'm sure we all have learnt like that
You want me to put the crashes in and add a bit of commentary? I could try that for the next video…
@@wingfoillife3901 yes that would be good. Give us a bir of background. Why is it you are so good at ir. Like did you extend your technique from skateboard, kite surf or windsurf?
@@onederment allright this gives me great idea for next video 🤙🏼
