Unboxing a Fluval 110 installing on my 29 gallon under gravel filter with commentary

My 29 gallon aquarium with a Fluval 110 and a Fluval 207 Basically, I hate how the aqua clear filters make so much noise inside of the aquarium. I don’t personally like it I’m trying to keep vibration out of the water column, and my compromise is to run it on a timer for about 6 to 8 hours a day. The Fluval has a 14 watt motor which pulls 500 gallons per hour. I have noticed that it doesn’t d...

Basically, I pulled the Fluval 207. I’m running an aqua clear 30 with just mechanical filtration. I will clean more often than usual to keep the biologic activity out of the filter. I’m trying to shift the biologic activity, either to a very slow flow canister or deeper into the gravel bed, and maybe even see if the plants having ammonia available may uptake that and grow better. I basically dialed back the 207 waterflow adjuster valve to a near trickle and I’m going to see if I can get that canister into an anoxic state with a very low flow rate to it. I currently have no ammonia, or nitrite. The water is very clear so I don’t need any mechanical filtration at the ...

I bought the predecessor the Magnum 330 in 91 while I was working at NW Tropical fish hatchery outside of Seattle .I was able to get a good discount through my employer and paid like $80 which was still a bit in that era .Btw I still have it,still use it but mainly for polishing using diatom powder and the micron filter of course .I later purchased the 350 which failed when the impeller literally fused with the case .It wasn't run dry and I'll probably never know how the hell this happened .Out of the two I preferred the 330, plus I noticed how hot the motor would get on the 350 whereas the 330 has better venting for the motor heat .I definitely prefer the impeller design of the 330 over the 350 and amazingly you can still find them .The carbon container wasn't my favorite especially if the screen jumps out of its channel ,kinda a pain to get it back in place and lined up .As far as those clips for the hose ..I despise those things .They were made with inferior plastic and broke.. a lot .I have a Magnum HOT 250 which is a great little filter and that also has a micron filter option ,but it uses those dreaded clips to secure the hardline tubing .I've been trying to find a replacement impeller for it for years now but the only one I've seen on ebay is being sold for a ridiculous amount of money ,like $200 .I'm nostalgic but not stupid and I don't want to throw away a perfectly good piece of equipment just because of one part that's not a big deal to replace but there's no way I'm laying out the price of a good filter for that thing .For that amount I can buy a new Sunsun HW-3000 that has lots of features including being able to dial back the motor speed,UV sterilization etc for under $150 If you know anybody who might have a spare impeller or two ,let me know .Prior to the pandemic I saw them available for under $20 which was the same price marineland would charge but afterwards ,they all dried up for whatever reason .Same thing as the old smaller Penguin biowheel 170 ,the impellers have all vanished .BTW the other magnum in the 200 range uses exactly the same parts as the 330 but the motor has less power ,otherwise they're identical .The biggest drawback for that particular style were the weak motor housing base outrigger feet .When they went with the 350 ,the base, impeller, and case all got a redesign but the lid and a couple of other things fits all of them . I just managed to find two systems for the 330 minus the motors for under $70 .Seeing how these things are vanishing, I thought it was a good investment since the motors last forever if they're properly maintained and kept clean ,but the cases can and do crack. We used these filters exclusively at the hatchery for all our incoming quarantine and hospital tanks .The ichthyologists I worked with swore by these things which is what sold me on buying one all those years ago .Anyways cool nostalgic vid and if you know anyone who has impeller for the HOT 250 and or a Penguin 170 , by all means hit me up .✌️

Well, you might be surprised to know that there's one additional thing you could do to this filter and make it filter even finer particulates, including many parasites, charging it with diatomaceous earth. It's essentially the same as the Vortex filter ( no longer available ) - but I charge my marineland internal canister filter ( doesn't have a model #, just says for aquariums up to 97 gal ) with diatomaceous earth and it will turn just about any cloudy, dirty, green algae filled tanks, into crystal clear polished water like you've never seen before. There's a couple of youtube vids out there explaining the whole process. I have been using diatom earth for over 40 years and I have yet to see anything come even close. Trust me, try it.

There’s to much flow in the substrate which means there’s bacteria that eats only ammonia no nitrate I’d put like 4 5 inches of gravel with kitty litter on top of the under gravel and make the flow slow . A 29 tall works well with very thick substrate

6:54 that betta moved fast. A few suggestions to reduce nitrate are: reduce stock Put surface plants like duckweed and remove the excess if it's too much to not overshadow your tank, Using plants outside of aquarium like pothos. With the downside of maybe "polluting" the visual with roots if it's not your style. I personally like it. But really easy to trim, since it's outside. Use snails to remove excessive food. Mainly the small ones, to go trough the gravel While changing water i'd say to as little as possible. It's better to do like 10% a week than 30% a month.

If you fish are panting it's more likely to be nitrite not nitrate I run slow moving plenum on all 35 aquariums with great success I have 0ppm nitrate but still keep up with weekly water changes its not to just remove nitrate it replenishes the water with minerals

  • @AQUAGUYUK

This is over stocked and a filter on a timer really is not good as and bacteria will die also the water change is to add as well as remove the fish you have in the tank are hardy fish but guppies will end up with arched backs due to lack of minerals and calcium never ever leave a tank more than 6 months without change most aquarist prefer 15% weekly and this ensures longevity the smaller the tank the more toxicity will be apparent

Be interesting to see a test run using the reverse flow UGF. I'd imagine it'd be good for a planted aquarium because you're capturing all those nutrients underneath and creating mulm. I run a UGF the regular way which also works. Either way, the idea is that you're utilizing your gravel bed as your main biofiltration and eliminating any dead zones from going anaerobic and making more ammonia by ensuring an aerobic environment for the right microbes. And by messing around with the lower flow rates, you can even make it go anoxic to eat up the nitrates as well with some experimentation.
