I am using this channel to showcase my 78RPM (shellac) recordings, other vintage music, and landscape & wildlife videos. I no longer air political opinions here on RUclips (instead I publish occasional opinion pieces on Substack). I enjoy Victorian / early 20th Century chamber music, brass bands, and traditional church music including campanology.
Rothesay Shellacs: Rose Marie (as heard in Still Game)
This famous love song was originally penned by by Otto Harbach and Oscar Hammerstein II for an operetta of the same name based on a story set in Canada, and which was popular back in the 1920's. Alongside Indian Love Call, the fame of Rose Marie outlasted the eponymous operetta. It became immortalised by Slim Whitman, was a favourite among many other singers, and recently was made famous again on Still Game (episode: 'Wireless').
Columbia (78RPM) 9038. Sung by Derek Oldham. I do not own the copyright of this song or record and as such this video is not monetised.

Rothesay Shellacs: Stracathro (Glasgow Orpheus Choir)

Much to my chagrin, I cannot provide the lyrics as I cannot discern them accurately and cannot trace them online. Nevertheless, it is satisfying enough just to hear the Old Scottish psalm being expressed by the famous Glasgow Orpheus Choir conducted by Sir Hugh Roberton, both highly cherished by Glaswegians during the early to mid-20th Century. Roberton founded the choir in 1901 and conducted i...
Rothesay Shellacs: Billy Graham Crusade shellac (1954)

This commemorative 78RPM record featuring the Billy Graham Greater London Crusade Choir was released by Redemption Records (cat.no. R.R.55) in 1954 during the great American televangelist's crusade in Britain during the mid-1950's. He visited London in 1954, and toured Scotland in the following year. This record features two hymns, which were composed by another two remarkable American evangeli...
Rothesay Shellacs: Abendsegen (Hansel and Gretel)

The well-known Evening Prayer/Benediction from Act 2 of Engelbert Humperdinck's opera, Hansel and Gretel, based on the famous story by the Grimm brothers. The lyrics are in German and can be easily translated online. This remarkable shellac record from 1935 contains a dual recording of Elisabeth Schumann singing both halves of the duet. This is a well-known song and I do not claim to own the co...

Regal / Zonophone MR2706 (released in 1938). PART 1 0:00 All By Yourself in the Moonlight 1:09 Horsey, Keep Your Tail Up 2:14 Poor Little Angeline PA...
Rothesay Shellacs: Come Ye Thankful People, Come (Zonophone)

Another great traditional English hymn, this one written by Henry Alford in the early Victorian period, back in the days when the humble British worker was far more dependent on local produce, and thus on the changing weather and seasons, and looked to The Provider for help and sustenance. The subject of the harvest time is also metaphorical, for on the Last Day the human race shall be harveste...
Rothesay Shellacs: Jesu Lover of My Soul (Zonophone)

Zonophone (78RPM) 5368. Hymn text by Charles Wesley. I have tried my best to augment the sound, but the second verse is very faint so I have furnished this audio file with captions of the lines for all three verses.
Rothesay Shellacs: Schubert - Symphony No.8 ('Unfinished') 2nd movement
Просмотров 6712 часов назад
Performed by the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stanley Chapple. Broadcast Twelve (78RPM). Likewise, this recording of the second movement is a compilation of three segments covering three shellac disc sides (5095B, 5096). This movement in E major provides such a colourful, serene contrast with the moody, troubled first movement in B minor, although it is punctuated by two fiery ...
Rothesay Shellacs: Schubert - Symphony No.8 ('Unfinished') 1st movement

Performed by the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stanley Chapple. Broadcast Twelve (78RPM). This recording of the first movement of Schubert's famous 'unfinished symphony' is a compilation of three segments covering three shellac disc sides (5094A,B, 5095). The story of Franz Schubert and his incomplete symphony is well known. Schubert spent much of his life in poverty and obscuri...
Rothesay Shellacs: Far Away (Londonderry Air)

HMV C4102 (78RPM). By George Sigerson, set to music by TRG Joze in 1901. One of the great many different ballads set to the tune of Londonderry Air / Danny Boy. Performed by the Glasgow Orpheus Choir. I do not own the copyright of this record or the tune, and as such this video is not monetised.
Rothesay Shellacs: The Old Woman (Campbell)

HMV (shellac, 78RPM), C4102. Glasgow Orpheus Choir. This short but poignant poem put to music by Hugh Roberton was composed by the great Irish poet and playwright Joseph Campbell in 1913, on the approach of both the First World War and the Irish civil wars. Campbell was born and raised in Belfast in the 1880’s. He was cultured, and became well-travelled and politically active, working briefly i...

Broadcast Twelve 5110-A Solo performed by Kreisler himself. An improved recording of this endearing violin solo composed by one of the greatest violinists of last century, Fritz Kreisler, a child prodigy who was playing in orchestras at age seven. (I have processed and augmented the volume of the audio file by 4X to 7X). Broadcast Twelve was a short-lived gramophone music record producer in the...
Rothesay Shellacs: Lilac Time (Broadcast Twelve)
Просмотров 1019 часов назад
One of my favourites, this shellac features a medley of popular tunes by Schubert, sourced mainly from Rosamunde. This shellac is particularly significant as it was produced one century after Franz Schubert passed away (in 1828). Broadcast Twelve 5004. Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stanley Chapple. I do not own the copyright and as such this video is not monetised.

The Dream of Gerontius (Edison-Bell, 1924) (9/16) - Dialogue
I Haven't been to Paisley in a long time, but I'm always a little sad to see what the town has become. It still has some beautiful old buildings, but much of the place is left to decay (like so many other Scottish towns) and the changing demographics make it less welcoming (again, the same as many other Scottish towns).
True. One has to be almost a professional photographer to sift and seek out the chinks of beauty amidst the gloom and deterioration.
@@standrean Indeed, much like life. I often view videos and photographs of old Britain to see what went before. It is more often than not a bittersweet experience. This is a charming little restored video of Scotland many moons ago:ruclips.net/video/Ya7mt9GT710/видео.htmlfeature=shared
I want to visit UK as tourist maybe this summer, never been there
Heartbreaking news: last week our beloved cat was run over by a speeding car just outside the house. This is the FOURTH cat in our family that's been mowed down on a residential street these past few years. Is it any wonder that the dog owners round here keep their pooches locked indoors all day, and leave the poor creatures to bark insanely at the window all the day long whilst they're out at work. I cannot refrain from also saying that EV cars are some of the worst offenders, with way too much initial acceleration and torque.
By George, what have we here? It takes a skill indeed to go up and down the octave; myself a piano player decades old, I know all too well how challenging it is to play at this speed even with 45 keys. Accordion, concertina, harmonica -- they're all surely challenging and certainly require the 1000s of "man-hours" to master in their own ways! It pays to note that my late Nan was a Domina harmonica player and a maestro musician. Endearingly, as a child, I would watch her play the ole (what we call a Christmas Worm) just before Christmas and long after New Year's. I bet this one was of the smaller type? Some are humongous -- and here, the player is quite the avid musician, especially since the multi-dexterous cadences of his/her (I'm betting heads that's a male accordionist!) speaks well to years and years, if not decades, of practice. And it makes it all the more difficult to know you can't silently "cheat" when playing the odd notes of dissonance or discord -- even soft playing is rather noticeable. So, game on! Of equal mention are my French roots from both parents. Pure Anemoia, the nostalgia of a place I've never encountered. Hearing this is something arresting, in the spirit that says Welcome Home.
My sentiments also. Looking back now, I'm so glad I happened to be carrying my camera that same morning, such a remarkable coincidence that I could not resist pressing Record and enjoying the music on what was otherwise a rather dull journey through east Glasgow.
Happy cat. 😸
Oh so you're alive! Thank god, I was worried about you, people were saying you left this realm by your own hand. I'm just some complete stranger who remembered one of your vids from years ago and decided to search for your whereabouts. I'm so happy the rumors are false and you seem to have passions going on your life. I hope you continue find joy in life and continue to make the best of your days. All the best 👋
No worries, I've simply moved on, just like JustJames and GeorgesJournal have.
Missing your voice ....
Stay tuned - I intend to begin making videos reflecting on moral issues and post each one on a Sunday (but not every week, just now and then).
I think at the time when this was recorded, Elgar was deeply despressed. Because the premire of the piece was a flop. and he quoted on this topic. im paraphrasing "I opened my heart to the public once, and they wont let me have a decent hearing of my music, now my heart is now shut to all feeling". Like imagine putting your entire being into something, and it being brushed off like its nothing. That would tear out a mans soul/motivation/willpower.
I was hoping to make a pilgrimage to Requiem for a Fool (now I'm a 40-year-old virgin) as I believe that video greatly changed my life. But I understand why you removed your content. Thanks for all the vids over the years, they were a great comfort when I was in a very low place.
Glad to read that my videos were in some way beneficial. However, two years ago I made a conscious decision to purge all my personal videos describing my unemployment, social inadequacy and inceldom, not least because my nieces and nephews are now in high school and I don't want them being targeted on account of my online content. Obviously I'm still dateless and retain my V card, but frankly I've accepted that one cannot have everything in Life, that in many other aspects I am more fortunate than most people our generation.
I been thinking what if jesus AI is the second coming of Jesus. Like God could have directed human evolution to produce computer and ai and micro chips so that Jesus can return in a digital form.
Kamala or Trump???
What about them, could you elaborate?
@@standrean who do you think has the better economic plan, I think like kamala will increase the USA debt.
Trump! Though I'd prefer Ron Paul (or Rand actually).
i think the end times might come soon, so many things are collapsing around us hang on in there.
Hey Malcolm I am wondering what are thought on AI. I notice there lot of ai girlfriend being marketed toward men do you think this could change society for the better, this could be an interesting video.
I would stay clear of any AI chatbots - it's just the next level in online dating. Dodgy companies and crooks will charge exorbitant prices and in the end these fake conversations amount to time and money being poured down a digital black hole. As you know, AI girlfriends now exist in abundance and to access them costs the user a LOT of money.
@@standrean Some of them are free however. Would you get an AI or robot gf? I feel this could help men who struggle.
@@Agustinoism No, because it will never be the real thing. I've long accepted that romantic intimacy shall always be the one thing that is missing in my life. Incidentally, dating sites are apparently losing their corporate value as they lose customers who have become disgruntled with disappointing experiences, according to this article www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/article/2024/aug/17/dating-apps-decline-bumble-tinder
@@standrean I see well thanks for your input.
@@standrean I forgot to mention I know you are a big on religion. I am wondering what are your thought on this thing called "AI JESUS" like some created an AI chat bot and its like giving you the advice that jesus would give to his followers. Thoughts.

Sad but true.
I know you are retired from you tube but any though on the riots going on in England malcolm, who is to blame
This is where I have to show my three-quarters Scottish identity and admit that this appears to be an English problem which I cannot fully understand - although even I can see that the media are spinning narratives and jumping to their own conclusions quicker than gossiping office ladies. One thing I will say though is that 99 per cent of people resident in England have NOT rioted, have not participated in this civil unrest.

Hello. Where can I find those book reviews you made?
That's a very good question. Unfortunately, with the exception of the fourth series which I produced during the early months of 2021, I cannot restore these videos as they are replete with copyright-infringing music segments and borrowed imagery. These days I lack the time to reprocess these reviews satisfactorily.
