Making Dutch Sinterklaas Treats as a Dutch Canadian
Every year on the 5th of December my family celebrates the Dutch holiday Sinterklaas. This year looked a bit different, as we didn't have a dutch stores near by to purchase our Sinterklaas treats.
So to continue on with our tradition I decided to try my hand at making a few of our favourite Sinterklaas treats.
If you enjoyed this video and want to see what Dutch treats we make for New Years let me know in the comments!

Oh my goodness!! This is how I feel!! I keep tidying parts of my crafting space, but it seems that things are multiplying up there! 🫣 I need a solid week to pull it all apart, sort/destash, organize, reorganize, store, photograph and post items for sale. That MIGHT be enough time. Can't wait to see the progress you make! I'd love to see what kind of process & storage options you use.
I fully expect this to take me a month if I include organzing fabric 😅😅
@ I've organized & reorganized my fabric, but then I find more that I just HAVE to have 🤦🏼♀️ I've also become a bit of a vintage pattern collector, so I have a few (dozen) that I need to check & organize. Then to photo all of the keepers & the de-stashers. I'm ready for some hints on how to decide what to destash and how to neatly store what you keep!
@@maribrown1361 that sounds so organized 😍
Oh please 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love that you show the reall stuff! I can absolutely relate, honestly, my house looks like a hoarder lives here right now! I swear it'll get better! 😅😭
I’m right there with you! 😂 One day my house will be tidy, but today is not that day 😂😂
I might have to try these for next New Years. Looks delicious!
I tried these once at a friends’ New Year’s party and loved them! I really have to try making them myself some time soon - so tasty!
That's so nice! I always make pepernoten myself even though you can get them in any supermarket in Holland. They taste much better!
You are so much fun!!!
I want to be with you when you get back to them. I wanna do lace with you!!!!!l

Well done! All those cookies look delicious and perfect sneaky treats. When baking pastry, try not to crowd the tray. When you pulled the almond rings out of the oven, they looked a little blonde to me around the sides because the tray was full. Maybe split it between two trays next time just so everything gets even heat in the oven. Your hubby is a baker by trade, and I am not, so listen to him before you listen to me. 😘💕
Thanks for the tip! I'll try that next time!
Merry Christmas

The 'gingerbread' looks delicious. ❤❤❤
What about glug😂?
Dutchie here. In the Netherlands avocaat is not a Sinterklaas treat. Sinterklaas has children are the target audience, and aocaat is more of a Christmas dinner/cocktail type of drink. Dutch Sinterklaas is on december 5th and has no connection to Christmas. Kruidnoten could be translated as spice nuts I suppose, calling those peppernoten is actually a misnomer, because kruidnoten and pepernoten are 2 very different things. I don't blame you though, most Dutch children here know kruidnoten as pepernoten. Pepernoten are historically older, but once kruidnoten were invented they overtook pepernoten in popularity (easier to chew, sweeter and less bitter). The banketstaaf looks great! I presume you have Dutch roots, otherwise I'd be surprised you even know of Sinterklaas or taaitaai. Funny thing how Dutch immigrants took Sinterklaas/Saint Nicolas to the New World where he changed into Santa Claus/Saint Nick. (And then his coca cola copy was back imported into the Netherlands, so we have both now😅) People should never confuse Dutch Sinterklaas/Saint Nicolas with Christmas though, Sinterklaas is on december 6th, the deathday of the Saint, and he is celebrated in many countries in Europe. (Through the american cultural lens which has no historic context his helper is judged as problematic unfortunately, shame)
@@EmeraldVideosNL thank you for letting me know! I am 95% Dutch Canadian (5% Hungarian) 😄 My mom was born in Holland and my dad's parents immigrated to Canada from Holland in the 50s The adcovaat was something my parents only made at Sinterklaas so that is why I associate it with the holiday 😄
@@TheEnchantedHomemaker Oh wow, awesome! Apart from the names of Sinterklaas treats, did they teach you to speak any Dutch?
@EmeraldVideosNL i know a few words, but my mom and aunts spoke a mixture of English, Dutch and Frisian around me so I never really picked it up. I am trying to learn on duolingo right now 😅
In Germany we call the little gingerbread thingies Pfeffernüsse, which translates precisely into 'pepper nuts'. A little tip though for making them (and other gingerbread type cookies): don't rely on the electric mixer, knead the dough in short time by hand or it'll get hard after baking. If it's gotten hard anyway, put it in a tight lidded tin can with an apple slice or two and let it sit for a couple of days. Making European style gingerbread can be a messy business, especially when there's honey involved, and you may need some patience before you can dig in, but nothing is tastier than a thoroughly spiced Lebkuchen 😊 Another cultural tidbit: the most popular time for eggnog in Germany is actually Easter, not Christmas. No clue why though^^ And Advocaat is a well known brand of store bought eggnog here! I enjoyed watching your first non-sewing related video as much as I enjoy your sewing stuff :) Happy holidays to you and your family!
@@tanjaauer1140 Oooooo thank you for the tip! I'll definitely try it next time I make the kruidnoten!
Dammit lass you sent me down an alcoholic rabbit hole. Another Christmas ritual was making Advocaat 4 eggs 4 large lemons Medium tin evaporated milk 1lb castor sugar Gill brandy Soak eggs in lemon juice for three days, turn three times a day. Beat and sieve and add other ingredients. Half fill glass and add lemonade.
@@margaretbarclay-laughton2086 that sounds delicious
Just getting up in NE Oklahoma, and I'm so happy to see you this morning! The amount of joy I get from seeing the plaid of the Better Homes & Garden cook book 👩🏼🍳💋 The memories surrounding my mom's copy of that book are the best ❤ 1:07
