Добавлен 26 апр 2013
G'day all. Chris here. I live in Melbourne, Australia and have a passion for making things. I make stuff out of wood or steel or both. I decided about a year ago to start making my own videos, and I can honestly say, it was the best thing I have done. I have met a lot of great people along the journey. So I hope you take the time to watch my videos and subscribe to my channel. Thank you.

Big sticks - big machines!
A quick video collaboration by North Wind Creative and Built By CHRIS.
Gavin bought over some big sticks to mill. Let me say, they were very heavy.
Apologies for the occasional swearing, but it's two blokes doing some heavy lifting.

Drum Sander Unboxing, Assembly and Review
Просмотров 1 тыс.2 года назад
Welcome back to Built By Chris. It's been a few months since my last video, due to the fact that it has been way to hot in the workshop. Anyway, took advantage of a cooler day to unbox, assemble and review my new drum sander. I purchased the drum sander from Timbecon. I've wanted one for a while now, and when this unit came up, I jumped on it. Suffice it to say, I really like this one. So I hop...

How To Stop A Workbench From Wobbling
Thanks mate, you’re making it look easy You’ve given me the confidence to tackle my pantry shelving myself Have a great day 👍
Trust me when I say this, Rick, it's easier than falling over. My only advice, get yourself the right tools and don't tell anyone that you can do it. 👍😉
Chris I just came across your video and I think that this circle cutting jig is one of the best that I’ve seen. I made one last week but I will be making one like yours for sure.
Thanks for kind words. So glad you liked it and I hope you get as much enjoyment out it as I do. Cheers and thanks for your support. 👍
Welcome back mate. Nice to see someone braving the cold workshop over winter!
Thanks Michael, had no choice. Gav turned up and needed them done. 👍
Milled by Chris ❤
Thank you sir. 👍🍺🇩🇰🇦🇺
Those it is some nice equipment and lumber!
Thank you. Didn't think it would turn out so nice. 👍
That’s some awesome timber. The thicknesser looks an absolute beast too. Good to see you back. 👍
Thanks Ross. I call the thicknesser the "Aircraft Carrier" due to it's size. But yes, it's an absolute monster. Thanks for watching. 👍
Chris: "Ready! Steady!" Gav: "FFFFFucking heavy!" Scriptwriters deserve an Oscar here boys, good job 🤣
We worked on that for hours, I'll have you know!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Nice timber.
Thanks mate. Came up an absolute treat once it was dressed, only wish we knew what species it was. 👍
Great video you two, I enjoyed watching that. It came across as though there was no camera on you, just two mates hanging out 👍🏼
Thanks Vic. I wasn't going to film it initially, but Gav said, "why not?". So, viola!! 👍
Hi Chris nice see you again. ❤️
Thanks Wanda, so sorry for the big gap between videos. 👍❤
Youth is, as ever, wasted on the young! Don't fuck your back, old man.
Thanks Adam, I'm thinking I might have to warm up before I go into the workshop now. Thanks for watching. 👍
There he is! Great to see Chris! How’s about a review on that weapon, I’ve been eyeing it off 🎉
Thanks Mark. Great idea. I've dubbed it the "Aircraft Carrier". And nothing seems to bog it down. 👍
That's gonna be one epic bar stool...
Mate, that is an understatement. They are some of the heaviest logs I've ever worked with.
So good to see you again Chris. Bonzer Job mate. I was doing a full pen flush yesterday with my wonderful Built By Chris pen and here you are! Imagine how this job would have been for craftspeople before machines like this were invented! Some of the structure beams in the roofs of the cathedrals of the world must have taken so much time to produce - for instance the work to produce the materials for rebuilding the Notre Dame! Cheers Chris, ripper video! Thumbs up emoji!
Thanks Eryk, great to hear from you as well. I really am very happy that you are still using the pen. Those logs were very heavy, and the grunting and groaning was real. Not as young as I used to be, you know. Hopefully this will be the first of many videos. I know I've dropped off a bit, but I've been looking after my mental health lately. Thanks again for watching Eryk. 👍
Nice mate, that's a great machine awesome video
Thanks mate, we've dubbed it the "Aircraft Carrier" due to it's size. It's an absolute monster.
Ive got this same machine!!!! Beast of a thing. But jointer mode. Dust collections not fsntastic. Gotta lower planer to 150 for dust to flip….. do you reraise the thicknesser bed to lift it up agen???? Thanks!!!
Thanks Trent. It's definitely a monster (I call it the "Aircraft Carrier"), and the dust extraction is a little below par. And once I lower the bed to flip the dust shield, it usually stays there until I need to thickness again. Thanks for watching. 👍
@@BuiltByChris oh cool. I do the same mate. Its sensational being able to joint then thickness a board on one machine upto 400mm Cheers for the video
Noice 🇦🇺🍻👍
Great to see your name here Dirk! I have a cup of Earl Grey tea in the pallet coaster you made for me here as I type. I hope you are ok and that your eyes are as good as they can be. Lucky to be alive at all here after an emergency op in April and now I feel years younger - amazing what can build up inside you with you knowing! I hope your workshop is thriving and that you and yours are are fulfilled and happy. I am wondering whether we may see more of you two larrikens on this platform sometime. Take care my friend and Hooroo!!! :-)
Thanks Harry, and thanks for watching. Really appreciate it. 👍
@@erykfreethinker7147 G’day Eryk & a pleasure to yak to you again mate. Chris & Gav are working with some big toothpicks here cobber & it’s grouse to watch. All going good on the home front Eryk but I don’t really dabble in this stuff anymore & rather do more varied DIY things in my job nowadays. These two lads are your new larrikins now & they team up pretty well. Wishing you all the best health & happiness 🇦🇺👍🍻
@@sumosprojects G'day Dirk. You will always be a larrikin my friend. I wish you well in all and everything you do. Working to prepare for, present a video must take up an enormous amount of time. I find it hard to make time to watch the video items that interest me and comment on them but the creating of them needs an extra lifetime! Take care Dirk, onwards and upwards as they say! Hooroo :-)
@@erykfreethinker7147 You’re still a legendary gentleman to Chris & I, see you around Cobber 👍
I never realized how easy edge banding was. I thought there was some mysterious fenagling involved, with expensive mechanical wizardry required. But nuh ! It's just an 'iron on sticker'!!.
I know, right. After I did my first one, I wondered what all the fuss was about. Thanks for watching. 👍
Great video mate, thanks for sharing. What kind of weight would you think that this runner system would take?
I've loaded up the big drawers with over 150kg and they worked like a treat. The smaller ones, I reckon the most I've had in there is about 50-60kg with no issues. Thanks for watching.
Still liking it? How was the laser?
Apart from the dust extraction, it's a great saw. As accurate today as the day I got it. 👍
@@BuiltByChris Happy to hear that, want to pick one when I can gather the funds for it. Do you have any videos on the dust cover you mentioned in other comments?
Built By Merv*
That's what they say.
Hey Chris, Can you make a video on the jig you are using. Thanks
Its $1400 nowa days 😮😮😮
Thank you for sharing your ideas on an awesome jig. If you are into microjig hardware, you can simplify that build by making the two slots from a dovetail bit.
Cool look forward to more videos 👌
Excellent
Im also from melbourne :) werribee 😂😂😂 and we dont countersink anything. Can you please stop as its making me uncomfortable ❤❤❤ love ya videos 😊😊😊😊😊
Thanks for watching Trent. I'm also an old Werribee boy. Lived just off Ballan Road across from the racecourse. And just so you know, I'm still countersinking everything. Cheers mate and thanks for the support. 👍
@@BuiltByChris oh beautiful!!! I live just off that road too :) I will be trying the double countersinks next time myself mate. Thanks for the content. Ive chewed through heaps of your videos already :)
Nice one, turned on and worked right away which is always a plus. Interesting that on the DIY model they include a bottle opener, dog tag, etc. Perhaps it's payment for making you do the work of assembling it! Be interesting to see what you make with it! 👍
It's been raining Algo lasers lately! Not a bad review that I've seen so far, they seem to have done their homework. Knowing you mate you'll have it upgraded to the 20W module by now :P
Hey Chris. Wanted to let you know how useful this video has been. 18 months ago I took over running the wood workshop at school (dream job!!), complete mess and all that but bit by bit we have organised and updated. We finally got around to sorting out the lathes (half were running backwards but no one noticed for years - don't ask). Couple of teachers were keen on turning pens (we had heaps of timber, kits and the assembly thing, just no one ever used them). I pointed them at this video and within a few days we were turning pens with the kids !! All thanks to you my friend.
Great craftsmanship mate 👍🏼
Thank you for your support. 👍👍
@@BuiltByChris no worries! I have a quick question if you don’t mind Chris, I have a small Vauxhall combo van and wanted to make some storage sections with false flooring - no drawers just 2 open sections to place ladders etc (basically the same as this without the drawers!) My plan is to have three long beams sitting upright (one for each side next to the van walls and one for middle section separating the two bays) and then lay the big sheet of ply to on top creating the false floor. My question is - do you think I’d need to make a bottom frame as you did or id be ok just screwing these upright beams directly into the original floorboard/metal? Hope that makes sense! Any help really appreciated, complete beginner here!!! Thanks from London 🇬🇧
@@solinworld632 I suppose it all depends on how big the beams are. If you're using 90x45mm beams, then you'll need a screw that will go through that and into the floor. One thing I didn't show, is I used rivnuts in the floor to secure that bottom piece down. But, in answer to your question, once the beams are in, and you screw a floor to it, I reckon it will be more than strong enough. Hope this helps. Let me know how you go with it. Cheers, mate. 🇦🇺🇬🇧
Nice work mate. How's the bandsaw? Looks pretty neat. I'm about to get a bloody beast of thing for my school (blade something like 2600+). Little one for home might be nice though.
Cheers Michael, the little band saw is an absolute gem. Granted, I only cut my pen blanks on it, but it's heaps better than using the monster that I have. (blade 3380). 👍👍
@@BuiltByChris Excellent. I like the idea of a little one for jobs like this. Unfortunately with NSW schools sometimes you don't get a say in what you can buy. Basically if it's a big item like a bandsaw, you have to buy the one model that head office has ticked off on. Little things like jigsaw or orbital sander you choose your own adventure. Still I am looking forward to our bandsaw finally being installed over Xmas - in the 18 months since I took over running the shop I've spent $30+k on equipment, but most of it has been sitting waiting to be installed. Finally got approved at 230pm on last day of school so hoping to get sparky in Feb to install the seven bits of gear. Speaking of school - you have been super helpful - I'll add a comment to your pen videos to tell the story...
Nice solution, Chris. I reckon a 3D printer is a must have for makers so that they can quickly design and make 'whatever' they need. A shame that your solution is hidden away like that. At least you'll know it's there. 😀
Thanks Colin. Turned out a pretty neat print, considering I used Tinkercad. I just can't seem to wrap my head around Fusion 360, and that's not from lack of trying. Thanks for watching. 👍
@@BuiltByChris I spent some time with Fusion 360 and just got tired of it. People rate it well although I think it's just overdone for most people. I use Shapr3D, mainly on iPad but it's also cross platform. Really worth checking out. It's a game changer for me.
Link to their website or something?
Looks like a well thought out bit of kit 👍🏻 Great price too! Thanks for sharing
Nice work mate, looking forward to hearing your thoughts after you have had some time to play with it
Onya Hossy, another toy to play with mate 😊👍🤘
Hey mate, good to see you on here. How ya been, Harry? 👍🍺
@@BuiltByChris Working hard as usual mate 🤠
Chris i enjoyed watching thankyou. The whole time i was watching im thinking whats the cost. So at the end i looked it up. It seems like a good deal to me, price wise, as its on special but only for 3 more days. I hoping that your performance video and imprescions will be online before then, as im interested in the 10w version.
Personally I think you are mad for doing a setup like this but.... you have enough OCD to sort it all out and get it going top effort and well done, me I had five yawns, four scratch heads, three naps two drinks and one trip to the toilet and you were done haha all the best
Cheers mate, thanks for the feedback. 👍
👏🏻👏🏻👍happy to see you. Very nice machine.
Thanks Wanda, always happy to hear from you. 👍
Thanks Sir, For sharing such a well thought out video. I noticed that your post is 3 years old, I love it and would like to build one. Could you please let me know what is the name of those 4 bolts that you use to secure the 2 sliders for the spacing of the router bits and /or where to get them.? Thanking you, and looking forward for your reply. Thanks again.
Hi, thanks for watching. Those screws are called Allen Head Panhead screws. I got them from Timbecon. Pretty sure you can get them from Bunnings. Unless, of course, you are not in Australia, then I suppose you can get them at any big box store. 👍
Great design! I was thinking about making one for my home drill press so I could leave my purchased one at my office playroom (shop). Have you had any problems with blowout using your vise? I use a waste block in my purchased one and it works well. If I make your design then I may try to incorporate that as well. Thanks for posting your video.
With a handle like yours I had to subscribe. This will be handy jig for turners. Many times I don't want to turn a completely round handle for a tool. this will make quick work of square or round to hexagon. For the old dogs out there like me, put a serious bevel or round - over on the input end of that aluminum angle. This will reduce the need of NewSkin and bandages! BTW, the tear-out on those holes for the lock down bolt is nasty. You know better and how to avoid it. Even painters tape on the back side (where the drill breaks through) are better than no back board at all. Wakodahatchee Chris
The biggest criticizer here, and honestly, I can not criticize one bit. Good job.
Hey Robert, thank you very much. I can take criticism all day long, as long as it's constructive. It's when people leave mean comments or criticise for the sake of it, that's when I turn off. Thanks for watching and for your support. 👍
very nice. i will attempt one today!
It will be a handy jig. Thanks for watching.
Great video, thank you
You are very welcome. 👍
Hi Chris, Is the Maker Meetup at Epping in Sydney or Melbourne? .. elsewhere? Cheers Russell
It’s in Melbourne this year.
Great design. I have been wanting to build a similar idea for my Incra TS-LS setup and you’ve made it easy by already thinking it through for me. On that note, is there anything you’d change or add to it since you’ve now had it a few years?
What a neat little solution! I think the beauty of having these new fabrication tools like CNCs and 3D printers is the world of thinking it opens up. You can design so many different solutions compared to a pure woodshop
Hey James, the 3D printer has certainly made a difference. Once you get one, you wonder how you ever did without it. Is there a 3D printer on your horizon? 👍
@@BuiltByChris one day, not in the near future
G'day Chris mate! Great to have a video of yours to enjoy. The main moral of this story is always make workshop fittings so that they can be taken apart to adapt to needs. Really nice solution to that problem - I need the four brick walls of my workshop to be moved back a few feet to give more room :-) By the way - your workshop floor is just as far down as mine - I need a hoist to get me back up :-) Good to see that you are expanding the posibilities for pen production. As you well know I treasure my Zurek pen and in its handmade leather pen case it now resides in a travelling scriptorium I commissioned from a leather worker that has all my calligraphy equipment I need on a stay-away from home. The exquisite pen you made for me is becoming well travelled! I know you will find a good use for the template you 3D printed! Take care Chris and please give my best regards to Dirk when you see him next
G'day Eryk, you have no idea how happy it makes me that you are still using the pen that I made for you. And knowing that it brings you happiness just makes the experience that much better. It just seems that the older I get, the further away that floor is getting. I may need to start (dare I say it) exercising, and try to get in some sort of shape. It sends a shudder up my spine just thinking about it. Maybe when I retire (hahaha, might not happen when I wanted it to) I may just join a gym. Also, the closer to retirement I get, the busier I seem to be getting. Along with my pen making, my CNC machine, the chopping boards and other knick knacks, I seem to be getting more and more work. Not really complaining, but it would be nice to just stop and smell the roses every now and then. Anyway, once again, thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching. Cheers for now my old mate. 👍🍺🇦🇺🇬🇧
