As amazing as Peter Sagan is, bunny hopping over curbs really isn’t that hard.

I always wondered if this was really worth it from an energy point of view, so I did some calculations. Assuming that bike + rider weighs about 80kg, and the kerb is 20cm high, then the energy required to jump onto the kerb is 80kg x 20cm x 9.81 m/s^2 = about 160 joules. Meanwhile, he probably gained about 20 metres. Let's assume he's putting out about 200W, and travelling at about 50km/h. In that case, the energy he saved was about 20m / 50km/h * 200W = 290 joules. So, yeah, turns out it was definitely an efficient move!

I tried this once on my road bike. The front tire when up the curb just fine. The back tire hit the curb and blew up. Had to call for a ride home.

I could do that when I was 8. 🤷‍♂️ also looked a little Sus.

I'm a bit surprised that sort of thing isn't against the rules since he basically cut a corner of the course.

I am fast approaching 50 years old, and don't ride regularly. I could and would do that bunny hop at (my) full speed without a second thought. Come at me. :-)
