    The GF shouldn't have cooked the meal actually. The son should have done some meal prep for his Mother at least for 6-14 days. The GF is a GF not fiance so it's not her job to cook for the Mother. If the Son is serious about the GF he should have taught he his customs and traditions. A GF is not an in-law to be oooh. The graveyard is filled with ladies who were called "our wife"😂😂😜🤪 The son should have proposed to the GF and then introduced her to the Other in the proper way. Basically, he set this lady up for failure...this Nigerwife will see weeeeh 😆🤣😈 Good luck 🤪😜 Thank goodness this is comedy 🤣

    The fact that she took care of him in hard times is enough. Just cultural education of expectations of differences is all that is needed: the momma is being unreasonable. Just learn other cultures.

    The boy has not grown up. He should know his culture, values, and customs and prepare the girls before bringing her to the mom. We Nigerians don't negotiate culture. Bring this Tobi to Nigeria for 6 months, and he will be another man. We Nigerian guys don't role like that; you need to learn the ropes. Please, where is his dad?.

    As an African woman, who has lived both in Africa and America I see this cultural conflict all the time. There is a basic and fundamental difference between the two cultures. What is frustrating is the fact that Africans are always talking about respecting culture, but are not willing to fo the same when ot comes to understanding american culture. How in the world would an American person who has never stepped foot in Africa, know anything about how Africans act? Even Africans from different countries have different cultural norms and experience culture shock when they travel from one country to another. There is an expectation in Africa that no matter how old you are you will always be treated like a child. The expectation in America is that once you are grown you are expected to make your own decisions, and build an independent life. Yes you can get advice from your elders, but ultimately you make your own life, make your own money, build your own career in a world that your parents and African relatives have never experienced. I think its ironic that uncle Charlie used the saying "When in Rome do as the Roman's do" The mother just arrived in Rome, (America) but she and Uncle Charlie expect the Romans to adapt to a culture they know nothing about. It is so painful to watch this grown man being berated, told to shut up and called names because " thats how we do it in Africa" Keira, you are a strong, faithful, supportive grown ass woman who truly loves her man. Your culture may be different, but it deserves just as much respect.

    If you are going to give up family for your gf, you had better be damned sure about your decision! I wrote another comment and it won’t post! Many things I’m noticing here. Uncle Charlie should not be talking in Pidgin and encouraging the mother to do so. The girlfriend doesn’t understand and it’s annoying both son and gf and frankly, rude in this setting. Also an observation… people bring their children from different cultures into the American culture. They immerse them in school, they have American friends, they live this life fully. It is hard to then expect them to bring someone who is not of their original culture into it. The real issue is the gf will never be suitable for the mother, because she doesn’t like her, full stop. This may be because of it being mother’s only son. If gf needs to learn some of their culture, mother needs to be open to change as well. You also can’t be talking about “lecturing” women.

    No disrespect but uncle Charlie is no therapist. I think he is biased and skewed towards mama Tobi and the Nigerian culture. If you want to advise on cultural differences, understand and balance both cultures. The mother needs to be able to understand the culture. Any girl that will end of with Tobi needs to be worried, the mum is a trouble maker and it won’t matter the girls culture if she does like her. Tobi needs to man up.

    • @nmart1n
      @nmart1n Месяц назад

      This! The gf probably doesn’t want to be disrespectful but I don’t think she will ever be good enough. The fact she is having to talk about a “safe space”. His mother should not be telling him to “shut up” in front of other people either. She talks about “training the girl” and training her family. That’s wild.

Trust and believe Tobi's mother will tell the whole world she is the biggest Christian, but you can already tell she is the type of mother that expects for her son to put her first when he gets married, as if the biblical order isn't God,spouse, children and then parents. She absolutely comes off as being a troublemaker, I'm sure he is happy she has to fly over to cause problems and most of the time she is far away

      but they aren't in Nigeria. In the west it is normal to call your mother in law by their first name. It isn't seen as being disrespectful. I understand in Nigeria things are different and they can have a conversation where the daughter-in-law just for the peace can call her by her desired title, but if the daugher-in-law sticks to calling her by her first name, she needs to respect that and understand that the point isn't to be direspectful

    This may be a case of cultural differences; Keriah has little regard for our customs and traditions. Respect is a big deal in our culture. Love has blinded Toby, he can’t see the red flags. Toby isolated himself from his roots and that is why his girl is rude and he can’t see it. Imagine a woman who walks in, interrupts the Mother, Uncle Charles, and her potential husband, and starts speaking. It is an abomination, a very big red flag. A proper African woman would acknowledge her elders and speak where appropriate but she keeps interrupting cuz she is rude. How the Mum relates with her son, is not Keriah’s business. The Mum can never hate her daughter-in-law cuz she is black American, the Mum is pissed cuz Kierra is rude, and Toby doesn’t even under his culture enough to teach Keriah that is if she is willing to learn. In Summary Core Issues: • Cultural Differences: Keriah is perceived as disrespectful of Nigerian customs and traditions. • Love's Blindness: Toby is overlooking red flags due to his love for Keriah. • Family Dynamics: The mother and Keriah are involved in a power struggle, and Keriah's behavior is seen as disrespectful to family elders. Specific Points: • Respect: Respect for elders is a crucial aspect of Nigerian culture, and Keriah's behavior is seen as a violation of this. • Cultural Ignorance: Toby's lack of cultural understanding is contributing to the conflict. • Family Values: The mother is emphasizing the importance of family values, which may be unfamiliar to Keriah. • Race: The mother's disapproval is not based on Keriah's race but on her behavior. Potential Solutions or Areas for Discussion: • Cultural Education: Toby could try to educate Keriah about Nigerian customs and traditions. • Open Communication: Open and honest communication between all parties involved could help resolve misunderstandings. • Compromise: Finding a middle ground that respects both cultures could be beneficial.

    I understand respecting culture but that yound lady has culture too. I feel like the mother immediately decided she didn't like her with out getting to know her. Toby seems a little Americanized and doesn't seem like he wants to eat Nigerian food all the time. This could be why he hasn't pushed for her to learn how to cook the dishes. I do feel like his mother is projecting negative energy without thinking about what will make her son happy. The young lady is educated and seem well mannered (I probably would have chose another dress to wear but the dress was still cute...lol). Nobody took the time to ask or consider her culture ( African American) which is insensitive and rude.

      What culture ?? The girl came in confronting the mother. Didn’t even say hi or nothing. The mom is clearly blaming the son for not teaching her the values of their culture. Sitting in the room while your mother in law is in the kitchen or just simply isolating yourself whenever she’s around is ok ? What culture could the girl possibly have. She don’t have respect. No matter how your parents are we don’t hate them or isolate ourselves from them in an African home. There’s nothing an African mother wouldn’t do for their child and they always want the best for them that’s all.

      It’s acting - however - When you marry someone from a different culture - your marrying their culture- the girl needs to make an effort. lol my mum drilled it to us - never to seat in the living room- when your in laws are cooking- you can even tell stories as they cook but be there 😂😂😂. The point is to integrate your self and not be separate. Also coming in hot did not help. Finally your husband not helping you assimilate to his culture is a red flag. If something happens to him and you have kids - he is potentially cutting you off from his side of the family. Your kids come in losing half their background- roots are important. Toby is at fault 😭😭🤣🤣

    The mom is right Every culture has their culture and values. This is why most American marriage fails, because there is no relationship between family. Obviously the girl had fail on her part to do so. She cannot go to her mother in-law house and stay in the room and expect Toby mom cook for her. Another thing is that she is rude, she cannot just walk in and start ask the woman questions, Toby mom is talking to her son. If she wants to marry from another country , first is to learn there ways , culture, values and believes, the same goes to toby.

    In Africa, Nigeria especially, you don't marry the person, you marry the family. You don't do that well by isolating yourself. Also, it is evident that the lady loves her man and she doesn't know what the actual problem is, which I understand. But Toby doesn't respect his mother and his family enough to teach her what the actual problem is. He is the PROBLEM, and it's crazy how he doesn't even see it.

He’s too busy trying to form like he’s just like her when he’s not! It’s likely that his entire extended family will feel exactly how his mother feels (absent maternal love). He needs to figure himself out before he leads another human being.

      This is going to be controversial… there is a fight here between cultures. People bring their children to the United States, immerse them in school and the culture. But, when the children are older, they are so shocked by the fact they no longer have that level of respect for the culture they had before. That’s not everybody, but it happens. We shouldn’t be shocked by Charlie, this is what you get. I think the mum has to acknowledge the differences. Conversely, Charlie’s girlfriend needs to acknowledge some of their traditions if she’s serious about him.

    Tobi needs to do a better job illustrating the stark cultural differences between Africans and African Americans. This situation clearly started based upon a lack of clear communication of experiences and expectations. The nature of African elders is unyielding and requires a degree of “old school respect” from the point of reference of a modern day American. This basically means you will not get anywhere with them unless and until you come at them in what they view is the proper way.
