I will be giving an explanation on why I halted my hardware plane build in the near future, but for now, enjoy this new project. I know I will! Thumbnail is of the new bush wheels in relation to the stock ones (which will still be used as nose gear). Should prove to be not only a challenge, but also a lot of fun!

I have been issued a challenge by another pilot friend, to build a plane, using materials I can source from my local hardware stores. Challenge Accepted! This series is going to document every step of the way, while still finishing the Lazair.

Update! I am sorry for the long hiatus. But as some of you may know, it’s hard to stay motivated when everything is pitted against you. But I am getting back to the grind on the lazair, and starting a new project in my home shop! Stay tuned! Ciao!

$200 eh? You did a great job with that table! 👌🏼
Here’s the material list! 2- 4x4x10ft 2-4x8’ sheets 1/2” spruce plywood 10- 2x4x10’
@ Thank you. I'll have to give her the old college try sometime. Cheers!
That’s my goal too. EZ Flyer at Oshkosh ‘25
An U/L looks very simple... until you build one.
Or in my case, rebuild from ground up haha. At least the fuselage was all there.
@@KoMaksAdventures We have rescued several Kasperwing U/Ls over the years, some were in need of extensive rebuilds.

Hi, just found your project. Very interesting, want to follow along. If you could do a lot less camera movement the video quality would improve greatly- I’ve had to train myself the same thing- it’s natural to move with your eyes but too hard to watch like that. Cheers- and good luck!
Ya my wife is going to start filming for me so I can focus on the project and not so much the filming.
Quantos kg ele pesa?
Lazair are a great aircraft, but as all aviation equipment, maintenance is key. If it is structurally undamaged, and the refurbishment is meticulously completed, they are a safe ultralight. It all depends on you…….
Good evening kodi Mike how are you
I am just wonderful! Summer has finally found us here!
I miss mine, was pure enjoyment. Bones look good for your rebuild and can't wait to see your progress. Soon I hope!
I hope so too!
gutsy project😀
If you find any replacement engines, please let me know. My rotax 185s for my Lazair were stolen with the mounts and i need to replace
I actually have another set. The ones that were seized. I’m doing a slight rebuild, and I will test compression. If it’s all good I’ll let you know and we can work out a deal. They even have props.
@@KoMaksAdventures Hi kodi, Sounds good, please let me know how it goes. Worst comes to worst, I could use the mounts.
Death trap - shut up. Like you said this video stinks. You plan to fly this. Karma may pay you back.
The fact that ‘blind’ if playing kills me 😭
I am a huge fan of Korn and I thought it fitting! As soon as I saw the song in the list I was like “um yes please?”
I just started teaching myself to weld after my tractor deck broke and it was as much to pay someone to weld as it would be to just buy a used one in 3 weeks I fixed my deck ,made a welding table and all the tools , rod benders and bar benders 4 table clamps and a 3rd hand 😊 yesterday I built a mobile 200lb welding table I can pull with my tractor out of inch steel plate that doubles as a driveway leveling device/rake. Making roller wheels was good idea ❤
That’s awesome! Being able to weld is a huge plus!
Watching this with our baby and he points and laughs and says, "Dada", lol
Be EXTREMELY CAREFUL: All aluminum is NOT equal. All bolts are not anywhere even close to equal to aviation grade. You need to use aviation grade structural components.
Not aluminum :) stay tuned!
Are you going to say what materials you are using as you progress through the build?
Yes for sure. The video 2 weeks from now will explain more.
Very interested to see your new Hard-wAir airplane.
Ha! That’s good I like it!
good to see ya back Kodi.!!..cool project but finish the lazair first.!!
Oh it will be finished first. It just takes me nearly an hour to get out to the hangar to work on it. New project is in my home shop, so more time during the week will be spent in the shop, and weekends out at the hangar hopefully.
Qué pasa con el avión?
Despacio… ahora no tengo mucho tiempo, entre trabajo a familia, pero en febrero tendré más tiempo. También ya hace muy frío aquí jaja
Our experience is that the crank seals will leak on old engines when they reach operating temp. The Lazair is a great U/L, one of the best from the Golden Era.
I have one with the motors wings and a 20 ft custom trailer. For sale !!!!!
What series? Where are you located?
Hey, just found your channel and wanted to give a shout out. Love the Lazair. I was one of the original Lazair owners and had a franchise area. I built, sold and instructed for a few years. Unfortunately Dale was all promise and no deliver on the floats and as we were in a water area the other ultralights started surpassing us in sales because of their floats. I became friends with the buyers and we would go flying together as a group, (we installed motorcycle cb radios above our head with push to talk for communication) we would find thermals and shut down the engines and glide around for hours. I would loop the Lazair and one of my instructors looped one 5 times in a row. In higher winds I could bring the plane about 6 ft off the ground and people could walk around and spin the tires as I floated above them. Wonderful flying machines, I do miss it.
What are the reg numbers. Look like my old plane.
It has new Reg marks, it was unregistered for almost 30 years when it last flew.
❤excellent job
Put a new skin on the right wing. When you put the leading edge skin on a wing, it's a big part of the wings strength along with the main spar. Look out be safe .
A dream.....how not to be passion 😢
OXIclean soak and air dry . if you machine wash it will fall apart!
Please do not use EMT. use a rated metal tubing, again from McMaster Carr. this could save your life . Landing gear can break off and may impale you if you are not careful and unlucky.
McMaster carr has everything you need for hardware and has warehouses all over the US. They are know in the robotic community but have a little bit of everything. great selection and quick delivery. Price is average with MSD , grainger and global industrial.
Thanks for the explanation on the medical.
12:33 YES IT DOES!
How about an update? All this time I thought Canada was better for ultralights and to find out you need a medical ticket? WOW! Get out there and work on the Lazair. That will help you de-funk yourself. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Update should be coming either today or tomorrow. Stay tuned.
@@KoMaksAdventures Great. I hope to have the front end of my LAzair rebuilt by the end of the weekend.
Crap
What's crap? The video? Or the plane? I'll admit the video does suck a bit. But I'm learning.
Please tell me about the wheels
They are actually heavy duty wheelbarrow tires with the metal rims.
@@KoMaksAdventures thank you so much for reply . Where are you from bro
I'm in south western Canada
❤very good job my friend I like it
Simplicity is your friend and is one of the best attributes of the Lazair 1. The 2 needed to know the engines. The 3 was able to teach Cub like handling to pilots. The two seater much more robust. Looping the 2 seater was a nothing burger. Ridge soaring the Lazair 1 or flying it on floats awesome, the best. Lazair floats are very light and easily damaged. Also do not have enough buoyancy rearward so flipping ovet backward is possible. Add to that area some volume add access hatches, carry a hand bilge pump. Know how to swim. That said i may never use an airport again. Water is where flying for fun, travel, even ridge soaring engines off.
Give us a weight on the assembly as it is now.
Ya once I have everything together I'll weigh it all. Definitely heavier but it may be worth it in the long run. Especially since I'm working on something but keeping it a secret for now 🤫
@@KoMaksAdventures Keep those classified ideas and projects under lock and key . What the hell, just keep them in your garage!!!🤣🤣🤣
😏
AN BOLTS PLEASE
Lazair is a cool ultralight, but dude, please hold your phone horizontally so we can see it all.
Ya I'm new at the whole video thing haha. I'll do another walk-around once it's complete.
Do NOT forget to put the jury struts in place before flying! I saw a fatal crasch with a series II because he didnt used the jury struts.....
Mine didn't come with jury struts...
Hello bro, greetings from Argentina. I have a construction project for a Lazair underway, from scratch and without plans, which is turning out to be quite tedious since the only references I have are your videos, some photos and general information found on the internet. I also managed to find the assembly manual for the series 3 (you can contact me if it's relevant to you), but it doesn't have measurements of its parts. maybe you could help me with that, record a video showing the middle of the structural tubes, the wings and the tail, if I can teulinr all the dimensions I will be able to make a render which I would be happy to share. all the best. Chao!
Here in Canada you only have to make a declaration of " I think I am fit enough to fly a Basic Ultralight " . So why the problems since the Lazair is a single place Basic UL .
Not if you have an instructor rating, which I am training for. Edit: but yeah worst case scenario that's what I do. Do the medical declaration. I had the category 3 medical from 5 years ago when I was going for my PPL. Made the switch to ultralight.
Why could you not do just the medical self declaration if you were feeling ok? Why would you go to 10k feet? Cheers
I plan on getting my instructor rating this year, which requires the category 3 medical. In the lazair I may not fly that high, but it's fun to fly up, turn the engines off or idle, and soar.
Looks really good.👍
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Looks good. I would put cables to create a triangle to brace them. Even small flexwing trikes are cable bracing, better safe that sorry Cheers
Ya I've got all the cables and brackets made, once I have the nose gear on I'll probably triangulation just to be safe. I do plan on landing on sand bars so having that bracing will be more than worth while.
Thanks for the responses. Watching very closely. Looks like I "might" be getting to put a couple of hours each day to my Lazair's come June.
Thanks for watching! I may try and find a Lazair 2 (2 seater) in the future if you know of any for sale, let me know!
@@KoMaksAdventures Will do.
Do you happen to have a vacuum pump? While active duty in the Air Force, we has a couple of "funky" cushions come to us and we vacuum bagged them. While they were under a hard vacuum we placed them in our composite curing oven set to around 175 degrees and let them cook for 30 minutes or so. Removed them and when releasing the vacuum, we had a small tube that we unplugged to let the air in and let it suck lysol spray from a jar. As the foam expanded the air sucked the lysol into it. Vacuumed the cushions three or four times, each time sucking the mixture of lysol and air in, but not cooking it. The funk disappeared after sitting on the table for a few hours to finish airing out. But if you don't have a vacuum pump, please disregard this message! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have a couple at work connected to high temp porcelain furnaces haha, so won't work for my needs. But I know someone who does have one, I'll look into that! Thanks Hugh!
Being the Lazair is a tail dragger or conventional landing gear, how will you change the weight and/or CG to keep the nose wheel down?
Hey Hugh! Even when the wings were on the balance was ever so slightly behind the main wheels. The added nose weight should in theory provide the necessary pivoting. If there is too mich on the nose I'll add a weight to the tail to keep things balanced right. Otherwise when landing slight nose down control will push the bise to where I need it. Of course we won't know until preliminary testing, high speed taxi etc. Thanks for watching!
Built and flew two originals. 145-154 pounds empty. 5&1/2hp worked great. No nose wheel. All decisions you make will take on new meaning when you realize you are actually1000feet high sitting on a banana seat. Work on weight loss.
Ya I'm thinking I miscalculated my empty weight. It doesnt make sense to me that it weighed 196, theres not a whole lot to it. Once the plane is complete I'll do a deep dive inspection of everything and do an empty weight. Stay tuned!
A series 2 with Rotax 185’s will weigh about 210 lbs empty. The series 1 was 50-60 lbs lighter.
