    18:00 - Catherine PIckstock's After Writing: On the Liturgical Consummation of Philosophy, made the point that many centuries ago there had been this other way of thinking about work - or at least, the money it generates. She tells us that prior to the 13th century AD, "excess capital" in Christian Western Europe had been typically invested in liturgy / public works. Then, at some point shortly thereafter, excess capital would more likely be invested in generating more excess capital. This is kind of the moment at which things explode, in both positive and pernicious ways. By the way, Jane Jacobs also dates the beginning of capitalism to a specific decade, the 1450s, when several London "counting houses" withdrew from trade with the continent, in order to focus solely on the financing of other companies' trade... Jacobs, too, thinks that capitalism goes awry when the purpose of money becomes primarily to make more money, rather than to finance bona fide economic innovation.

    Given the analogy between our work to make a living, and the work of the people in liturgy, we needn't worry about this aspect of a "post-work" society: What will we do when we run out of work? You can't run out of this work! Moreover, in order to avoid madness, you'll just have to go to church a lot more, and start really keeping the liturgical seasons of the Church. AI cannot do this for you, and going to liturgy intelligently and with feeling will give you the grounding to deal with the multiplying simulacra of deep fake life...

    Interesting convo. I love the writing of Dr. Patistas. I found the beginning of this conversation startling. Is it really a Beauty-first approach to claim that the world is billions of years old and that humanity is a product of evolution, which goes against the teachings of the early Church Fathers? I also found it a little startling that there is such an emphasis from Dr. Patistas on utopian visions of what the world “should be” like and a background sense of anger that “we’re not doing enough” to make a better world. I agree that we are not doing enough, we’re not doing enough, I’m not doing enough, to acquire heaven.

      Not only that is against the teachings of the early Church Fathers but renders Orthodoxy untrue and destroys the ideas of universals also Christ as a universal person.

      If I understand Dr. Timothy correctly, he is saying that beauty-first means seeing the world with open eyes - perceiving God in the magnificent order of creation. So yes, it's necessary to accept empirical facts like the fossil record. To close your eyes to obvious facts about the world (like fossils) for the sake of ancient chronological notions mentioned by the church fathers, would clearly be an ideological (truth-first, beauty-last) mode of thought.

    • @william_02
      @william_02 13 дней назад

      @@AndrewGould-NewWorldByzantine thanks for your reply. I guess it depends on if we view the fossil record as “obvious empirical facts”, which sounds just as much like a truth-centric approach in my opinion. The same “facts” of science can also be used to construct a nihilistic narrative. Whereas the timeline of the Church Fathers leads one directly towards a miraculous Creation.

    Surprisingly... I got the opposite impression than debalona... I perceive the interviewer (Golgonooza) is trying to obtain some light on the theme he has in mind... However it appeared to me that the interviewed (Malcolm Guite) seems not to be able to give himself chance to listen and to hear what is it needed from his abundant poetic or espiritual experience to provide clarification on... Again, I wish the interview would have had a rather more balanced relation between both subjects. There is not. Malcolm seems to have this uncontrollable need to utter his own thoughts, annihilating thus the chance to be asked... I am sorry to disagree with debalona, but an interview isn´t a soliloqui. I have not witnessed an example of self restrain in a speaker who overwhelms an audience with his own expressive needs, in spite of the need to listen to the questions an Other, or someone else, needs to ask... Might it be that the priest acted more like a preacher than as a poet who concurs in an act of reflection to collect the truths in the air of communication ?? Be it as it may, the video shows Golgonooza was a nice and patient listener... Good for him !!

      Interviewing is an art. Good interviewers serve, work with, accept the guest for who they are; which does not mean not push the guest, but doing so with a degree of self awareness, humility, wonder. If it's a conversation one is after, with back and forth, then maybe latter not best format for this particular coupling. Oranges give orange juice, cats meow, preachers preach, professors profess. With preachers and professors, it's about the art of the question. If you don't have a heart thought question, best to shut up and listen. Or try to listen.

    Such a frustrating interview, since the interviewer keeps inserting himself in everything and talking about himself. Ask a question, then sit back and listen without mumbling “mmm...”’or similar. We’re here to listen to the person being interviewed, not to you.
