'White Gold' Rush: My report on lithium
Просмотров 7921 день назад
Demand for lithium to power the green energy transformation continues to grow. Much of this demand for what's often referred to as 'white gold' is fuelled by the need for electric vehicle batteries, as well as grid energy storage. Lithium is a key component of such batteries. Much of the world's lithium comes from South America and Australia. However, Europe wants its own supply, and is sitting...

Mining Companies Destroying Indigenous Peoples' Lives

My report about a sensory art production at the Edinburgh Festival portraying how mining companies are destroying indigenous peoples' environment and threatening their lives. One of the artists who is from Colombia lost two brothers who she claims were killed because they were defending their territory. Colombia is the deadliest country for human rights defenders (An Là, BBC ALBA, 17/08/24).
Similarities between North Frisian and Gaelic minorities

A group of North Frisians from Germany visited the Hebrides and Scotland's Gaelic college, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, where I caught up with them to explore similarities between the two minorities. Lack of housing is a pressing issue in both places (An Là, BBC ALBA, 26/7/24). Wan dü fering snaakest, wal ik faan di hiar! - If you speak Fering I’d love to hear from you!

Wymysiöeryś, a language coming back like a phoenix
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Wymysiöeryś has 8 native speakers left who are still fluent. It was thought by an academic to be dead by now. However around ten people have so far learnt the language to fluency and the prospects are better than at any point since WWII. A Germanic language, it isn't mutually intelligible with German, but was still forbidden in communist Poland. However while most of the Germans in Silesia were...

AI translations are "word soup", TG4 News

AI translations of well known books into Scottish Gaelic have been called “word soup” by author, Alison Lang. In my interview for the Irish language news programme, TG4 Nuacht I make the point that the translations aren't beautiful, some of the text is unintelligible and the idea must have come from a monoglot.

Mayan Language Revitalisation through Science Curriculum

A project to gather indigenous Mayan science and teach it to pupils in Mexican schools in the native language is going into its second round. Boosting confidence, some kids reportedly ask their parents to speak more Maya to them. It is hoped this will help stop language decline. (An Là on BBC ALBA, 141/24)

Almost half the population of Alsace in Eastern France claim to speak the local Germanic language, but the president of the Cultural Council doubts that. In any case only 2% of under 25-year olds speak the language. This year a private model of bilingual partial immersion classes is tried for the first time in four schools (An Là, BBC ALBA, 12/12/23).

“Warum kommt Ihr uns so selten besuchen”, werde ich von einem älteren Herrn nach der deutschsprachigen Messe in Oppeln gefragt. Dann fügt er hinzu: “Und wenn mal Leute aus Deutschland kommen, dann haben sie Angst mit uns zu reden”. Er meint wohl den typisch deutschen vorauseilenden Gehorsam: Wer ehemals Deutsche Orte im heutigen Polen mit ihrem deutschen Namen benennt, der muß die Reichsgrenzen...

I'm american but i have north frisian ancestry, specifically pellworm island, sadly i can't find any good resources to learn the laungage
Did an Italian British Dutchman just ask me for money for Frisian?
That must be a misunderstanding. Wymysiöeryś is widely used in South-Western Poland. From Wrocław to Katowice most restaurant menus will be in this language too. In some regions people speak Wymysiöeryś and Silesian as a second language, yet hardly any Polish.
lol, utter bullshit what you are saying. 99 por cent of people in Wroclaw or Katowice or wherever else in Poland dont even know that there is a language called Wymysiöeryś. Why are you spreading false information?
How high are you?
@@starry_lis What has my height to do with the spread of Wymysiöeryś ?
what's your source of information? I am from Silesia and I can confirm you are wrong.
From the sound of the language, I immediately guessed it was Germanic. But yet I couldn't recognize a single word.
this language evolved from medieval German, in XIV century Poland was quite low populated compared to overcrowded western Europe, so our King invited colonists from Europe, most of them were German or Dutch speaking. This village is relic of this time, it's amazing they cultivated language so many centuries.
Complete BS!
Hast du gewidziol eine kleine porsiontko durch pole gelaufen?
I guess that's Wymysioerys? Thanks for the comment. What does it mean?
@@andreasgwolff it's a Silesian joke, mixed German and Silesian dialect. It means something like: did you see small piglet running through the field? :)
@Andreas G. Wollf, and how are we supposed to understand what is said?
Between the English language clips, the pictures and the English summary astons at the bottom you would have got 90%+ of the information. This approach supports another minority language: Scottish Gaelic. @hieratics @Gilbertineable

Can you upload some full bulletin from BBC An Là?
I'm afraid I can't do that. Sorry.
Though I'm English Scots is to English like Gallego is to Portuguese
did polish minority not recognised in Germany came too?
Any European minority was welcome to attend. However, I am not aware of a native Polish minority in Germany as opposed to Poles who have chosen to move there.
Are you Scottish by any chance?
No, but I've lived in Scotland for 20 years. Well spotted :-).

stay strong! I have been playing with chatGPT and it actually works well with west and north Frisian! I am learning quite a bit through this even though I have almost no resources to learn it in Canada otherwise.

Sad to see with generations passing on the importance of a language isn't given a value.
When you first spoke I thought you were Australian. Then Scottish. Then Welsh but to be honest, I can't place your accent.
I don't speak frisian, but i do speak a little Gáidhlig and A1 level in German being Native to English, ive always bean facinated with frisian. And feel it should be taught an public schools in certain reigons, it's an ancestoral tounge of the fries, just as all modern native English speakers should learn a Celtic language, for all native English speakers have some Celtic in them. All should learn their ancestoral tounges, if it's not their everyday or native Talk.
There are a lot of Native English speakers in the US and Canada that aren't of any Celtic descent at all and in the UK as well, but Celtic Britons should definitely learn their languages. A lot of Irish people act as if Irish Gaelic isn't important which is just sad.

It is really sad to see these beautiful languages go extinct. I am an Oguz Turk, and I have studied English Literature for two years, but I am sadly a drop out now. This evening I sudenly thought I would really like to speak and write in Old English. Because, I love how it sounds, and for the last four or five years I repeatedly speak Caedmon's Hymn when I do house chores or when I'm just walking in streets and thinking something else. So, I thought why not learn a modern language which I can speak to real people. I knew Frisian language is the closest language to the Old English because Old Frisian and Old English shared the same roots. Then I listened three dialects of Frisian and the one I've found most close to the phonetic pattern of the Old English was Western Frisian which is spoken in Netherlands. I have many other things that I must study and have real economic life problems, but I promised myself I will learn and create art with Frisian language when I find luxury to spare time for it. I hope young people there know the value of their mother tongue and speak and keep this such beautiful language alive.
The only Minorities Germany cares about are LGBTQ Germans who are either Arab, Asian, Black, and woke Greenie Germans as well who are now going to freeze to death as we speak LMAO.
