A Positive Paramotor Flight (for once!)
Просмотров 1953 месяца назад
My last 3 PPG posts have been about a training crash, a phone/prop destruction, and a mid-air collision (okay that title was clickbait, but still). How about a beautiful and scenic sunset flight, set to a treasured old hymn by a favorite band. I listened to this song during the flight, reflecting on a family I know who had received some tough news. Thankfully our hope is greater than just good ...

Tucker Gott isn’t the only guy who went to Phoenix! (he’s better, more popular and more interesting, but whatever). In February I went to a conference in Phoenix AZ (Best Practices in Ministry), brought my wing, rented a motor, and got into some light shenanigans with my Nebraskan buddy Roger. That was 100% whoever was running the tow machines fault. You stop the tow as soon as you see a issue. Also you only take the person high enough to go hands up and let the wing gain its full speed. Which is only 50ft. No need to go up higher
Great video as usual!
Love your video! Never saw a paraglider until a couple friends and I saw one along Lake Michigan while we were hiking at Lion's Den Nature Gorge in Grafton, WI. I wonder if he was from this same Wisconsin paragliding community? I went to Concordia for 6 years. The interconnected tunnels go back to when the place was built as a convent for the Sisters of Notre Dame. The buildings were interconnected so the Sisters could walk between the buildings without having to go outside in the harsh winters (or brave the local wildlife when the area was all wilderness). There used to be signs in the tunnels that said "Fallout Shelter," so that might have been their Cold War-era double purpose. Concordia has kept the tradition and built all newer buildings with interconnected tunnels. It's convenient for the students, especially if they want to wear shorts and sandals in February :)
Thanks for the add'l intel on the tunnels. I was there for a conference once and they came in handy!
When I did my training in 2021 I got towed as well. It was not very good. I should’ve just gotten into flight.
I know the feeling, I recall one time I landed, got my gear together, packed up, had a drink, checked everything and left. Next day I went to go out and looked for my VERY expensive sunglasses, made for me in Paris, gold designer frames, then tried to remember the last time I saw them. I knew I had them arriving at the LZ, went back the next weekend, didn’t find them. Then, about a month later I remembered, I sat down to have a cold drink, took the glasses off, wiped my face and hung the glasses from a twig on a bush! I went back the next weekend, they had mowed the field! The bush was gone!
NoOooOOooo...
Good stuff. Now please take a few minutes and fix the pictures behind you. Use a level lol
Ha! what can I say-- cats and kids... if I spent all my time leveling the photos from that chaos, I'd never have time to make low-quality videos!
@@djunclemilo I'll send you some high quality glue. Those pictures will never move so if you do, the pictures will need to stay
welcome to the 200 sub-club ✌🏻
It's an honor! Also I see you shoot video in Duluth-- I'm originally a Great Lakes (Detroit) guy and love watching freighters. Your ore train videos put a smile on my face!
@@djunclemilo thanks for the watch - and the kind words 😊 The ore cars run through the family, myself. Nearly 300 combined years between all the relatives on the DM&IR Railroad, I even pulled a couple 90's summers on the rail gang replacing many a mile of track too.
Toad flight! Crosswind? Glad you came out alright. Towing seems fun, but a little risky.
It's a good way to practice landings before adding the motor (and pretty much the only way if you don't have a hill to run off of), BUT you're right, it comes with some risks...as I found out...
@@djunclemilo my first time to get air was my first flight. Landing wasnt great, but no damage/injuries. Seems like towing needs a GOOD operator and equipment that can easily be clutched to prevent the lockout. Glad you came out alright, but damn, that tin roofing coulda decapitated your ass.
That song always makes me think of that Gary Cooper movie; “Sgt York”. They sang that song at his church and on the closing scene (I think).
HEY! Fellow Paramotor Pilot from Mequon, WI!
Y'all have a beautiful area up there!
My grandma’s favorite song…thanks for sharing that butter flight
That flight was like grandma's homemade butter :^)
What's the point of such a short tow?
Just get into the air to practice flaring/landing
@@djunclemilo Just use a small 20 m bunny hill?
@@turkeyphant Sure, but those are in short supply in farmland Illinois. it be F L A T
Wow, Glad you were OK! Several things were done incorrect be you trainer. They should have directed you to follow the cable then when you didn't they should have aborted the take off. Even when you made it in the air they should have had you release the cable earlier so you could have safely controlled the glider away from the carport. This is 100% on your trainer.
Crazy stuff. Thanks for posting, very educational
Hope it helps someone avoid a crash! I was fortunate for sure...
Good vid! I laughed about the crops; my wing has a similar attraction to mud puddles..😆 I cringed when I saw the corner of that awning coming up. Glad you escaped with only bruises.
I’m glad too! Definitely a pucker moment. Let’s stay out of puddles and crops and keep flyin’!
get someone to make you thumbnails. i guarantee youll get alot more views and therefore subs
Hey, you want to make my thumbnails?
When you imagined doing RUclips 200 subs was out of your imagination? Such a corny thing I get appreciation for the subs and views and comments. But let’s not act like we didn’t start a RUclips channel with a dream to “free” us from a regular 9-5 one day. Tucker gott style. Hate to sound like a hater but your first 18 seconds of video made me feel all this. I’ll still give you a sub like and comment though. Way to get back at it, I have never done a tow nice work.
Ha-- Not considering it hate at all! To address your questions: a)I may be exaggerating in the video that 200 is more than I'd imagine, although I do have very low expectations. My purpose is similar to your channel: "to share videos with friends and people who are interested". In some ways I think I use RUclips as the "cloud", a place to be able to store and revisit some of those flights myself. b) No doubt it's gratifying when other people are interested and comment and interact. But I dig my 9-5 and don't do any RUclips analytical strategizing to grow (besides saying "hey, like and subscribe!") ; I just like making videos and hope the right people see them...All that said, THANKS for the comment and the sub! I'll try to keep it interesting :^)
@@djunclemilo glad it was well received sometimes it’s easy to read a comment with a different tone then intended. I’m right there with you man, I do very similar content it would be nice to blow up and do RUclips but it’s not the goal in the slightest. I’m about to move back to the Midwest and I hope to get some flight up on a tow machine to thermal some free flight and mix that in with my Paramotor skill set since I won’t have mountains back east.
Make it happen dude!
220 yewwwww
Also, the winch operator did absolutely nothing to help. :|
I was thinking that too but trusting his skill, since the PG was so low it would have forced him to crash rather than giving him a chance. Tough call.
@@mikes6216 That's what I thought too. it was a tough call-- either tow and get me higher, or go slack and possibly introduce other problems. He was a good instructor. it was a tough call.
Winch launch like gliders use but obviously at a much lower speed.
There are some winch paragliders near where I usually fly. Do they crank a lot faster to get to altitude?
@@djunclemilo The stall speed of a glider is much faster than PG, yes.
I’m the 212 sub. Love the vids!
Thanks for the sub! Glad you’re liking the content
Wow. Lockout is no joke. Glad it was just a bruise. Could have been so much worse.
Congrats on 200!
That’s the equivalent of 200,000 on a real channel!
I've had at least two phones go through the Prop. You think I'd learn by first one, I hope the horses are okay.
Thankfully I didn't drop anything on them ;^) They probably were a little startled when I aborted the landing and zoomed out of there though. Thanks for sharing in my phone misery! Hope it's the last time for both of us
Expensive day. Hope your next flight is awesome.
I had no idea that butterflies fly so high either. I figured like 10 feet haha. As a farmer I'm curious what state this is in?
Yeah I guess they’re living lives we’re totally unaware of! This is in IL/MO. Farmland is on the IL side of the Mississippi River. Thanks for the comment!
Yes, it does happen and not just to you..get back up there and have a better flight next time
I did my friend! My next flight was chasing lake freighters along the Michigan/Canada border and it was uneventful and glorious!
Excellent production quality!!
That’s generous of you to say- I’ll take it!
just came from anthony vellas crash video. considered all the circumstances i say your flight was perfect. you didnt loose enough prop to be unable to climb. a damaged propeller like this usually falls apart some seconds later and would have send you straight into the woods/hospital. you didnt panic. you continue to fly and even stand the landing. dont care about the money. you walked away from that one to tell the tale for years to come. UNSCRATCHED! watch anthony´s video and then come back to tell me that you are super lucky. because this could have become so much worse mate
I saw that video 5 min after I posted this one! That was harrowing. And a reminder that any landing where you walk away is a great one, whether you have your phone or not! Here’s to Anthony’s recovery.
@@djunclemilo
Ugh, I hate when flights go like this! A few months ago I had my shroud cover bolts vibrate loose and fall out and take some chunks out of my prop. I hobbled back to my LZ. Had to purchase new prop and new shroud cover hardware. The sucky part of paramotoring for sure.
Glad you hobbled successfully- and thanks for reawakening my paranoia about my own shroud bolts ;-) Do you secure them any special way now?
@@djunclemilo I use blue threadlocker and orange indicator paste.
Wow! That was dangerous! )) Did you report to authorities? ))
Ha! No I slipped him $20 and he said he wouldn’t call the Conservation Department. So we left it at that
Good video but the devious part of me wanted to see some carnage lol :)
lol Yeah it was kind of a bait and switch, I apologize! BUT I have committed to posting a video of my best personal carnage when I hit 200 subs. Getting there!
I don’t know but i found this video calming for me :)
Me too! Thanks for the comment
In a high performance glider above the desert. Found a decent thermal because saw a circling eagle. We flew together with a safe separation and I marvelled at our elegantly synchronised friendship.... And then he looks over goes WTF and just about flips over on his back to get away. He had no idea I was there all that time.
Don’t they know we just want to be friends?!?
The Butterfly effect in real life!!
Ha! “If a butterfly flaps its wings over the Mississippi, will that cause a RUclips video to be made about it 6 months later?”

Don’t be hard on yourself, you had every right to be somewhat nervous.. great job and nice flight
Thanks! I was mostly nervous that I would spend all that time and NOT be able to get in the air. I definitely grew as a PPG pilot that day... to keep trying, not force it, and to take what the wing and the wind gave me. Thanks again for the encouraging comment
Wow,that was amazing,we all love camp and we got another reason to see how beautiful it is.
Great camp! Glad you got to enjoy the view, the fall colors from up there were really something :^)

I'll tell you, I went in pretty ignorant, so I didn't know about that stuff-- I'll research it for when I go next year! Any recommendations? You sound like you know the area well.
@@djunclemilo I actually live in Temecula just north of San Diego. But I flew there once when I helped my daughter move to Phoenix. I took my motor and extended the trip by a day so I could fly there. I had seen the mine on a few para vids so I planned a morning flight from from the dirt on the south side of Ak-Chin airport to the mine @ 32.955445, -111.816018 ,, it was awesome.
