Hidden Leaders Set-up and Walkthrough
HF has a cigar-in-mouth option ;)
Hah, I loved the dragonborn with multiple tentacles!
Was 'Die Again Another Day' at all a reference to the James Bond film Die Another Day? Great video!
We were playing off that ...but also in the campaign we are reliving the same day. So when a character dies they know they will likely die again the next day.
I have so many comments! 1. I'm not really sad that we played My Father's Work twice! I absolutely loved playing it both times, but hearing about some of the games we didn't play, I really wish we had made time for the other ones. Especially REAR WINDOW, if you had said "Mysterium Style Game" at any point I would've stopped everything and ripped the box open. (Mysterium is one of my favorite games ever.) 2. Cartographers was awesome. Simple to play and incredibly fun. I hope to play it again soon. 3. Roll Players was similarly terrific! It scratches a few itches in terms of subject matter interest, so I really enjoyed it. ASIDE: It probably speaks to the current nature of politics that we didn't even mention anything political this week. 4. My Father's Work is an absolute masterpiece and might be the best overall board game I've ever played. It's tough to rank at the moment and often depends on the mood, but just a true delight to have played it twice, despite my sadness at missing out on the other games we should've played, this one was great. Far better than the insane game of 7 person Blackjack with wacky rules that made no sense... 5. Next time I really want to play Hidden Leaders and Rear Window and I'm very intrigued by Illiterati and Cult of the Deep. PS. We are going to buy a copy of My Father's Work as a friend group and play it when I visit again. PSS. We played Joe's Squirrel game THE GRAY WAR, which I also quite enjoyed.
Glad you loved My Father’s Work. Hopefully they will kickstart an expansion at some point. I really think Cartographers is a must have for any game shelf. Roll Player is a game we break out regularly. It’s real fun even with just the two of us. Illiterati is probably my favorite word game. I’m a terrible speller, so the cooperative aspect is great for me. We had a lot of fun on our visit, hopefully we can make it back soon.
I have played WoW with both of you! Raft sounds a lot like the movie Life of Pi.
I came across this video the other day, and I wanted to say thank you for the comments and review. I am the designer of SKEPTICS and wanted to add some comments. I understand your comments regarding losing some of the theme after the game starts; we have already been adding in some more thematic elements into the gameplay and cards for future print runs and our upcoming expansion. The story of Skeptics is currently that you are investigators trying to prove to the town that there is indeed a Ghost haunting at the investigated location. The Skeptics are the people that need convincing, which has a small intro in the Rulebook. I will also be making a "Skeptical" character, that is invited for the "Ghost Hunt", to see if they can be convinced. Their ability card will get stronger and stronger for each Evidence that is uncovered that matches the Ghost Card, until finally you make them more of a believer. I even want to make a story for each Environment about why the items are scattered around, something simple. For the standees vs miniatures, it winds up being very Costly just to make just one mini. For a small company that is just getting started, it is quite hard to do. We have had many discussions about offering miniatures in the future and trying to decide how they would fix into the game box. Lastly, for the components that are scattered around (Search tokens), there is an option you can place the tokens as you go, rather than set things up in the beginning. As for the doors, we felt the best way to show that the door is locked is with a use of a token, or in this case, a simple component. We considered a few options for doors (3d prints or additional cardboard tokens), but ultimately, these options were cost prohibitive for our first game with our smaller print run. Thank you very much again for your comments and honesty. It helps us grow stronger and get better! Jon
Oh, I also agree with the bright green door overlays on the board. I will most likely tone that down in the expansion and second print run of the game. Thank you!
So excited to hear this. We both love the idea of the skeptical character. This is one of the games we always talk about because we see the potential. More story always draws us in. We totally appreciate pieces being cost prohibited. Maybe think of offering a separate upgrade pack, even if it is STLs that people can print at home. We can't await to see other projects you come up with in the future and to play the expansion!!!
@@smallworldsbigadventures Thank you for your response and the kind words! I love a game with story too! I guess since we had so many components already, we didn't want to bog it down further, but we do have ideas we can add to the story, without overwhelming the game. And honestly, that Skeptical character idea came to our thoughts because of your review; thank you! And it ties to the game name more. And for the STLs, I cannot say, or say, that we were thinking of that too :) Thank you again!!
I learned something about myself today.
Still waiting on my copy to arrive. Very excited!
Have you gotten it yet? Thoughts?
The artwork on that looks great!
Great points! I really like the ‘Fun First’ style of play. I always feel that one of the most important things is to be on the same page. Whatever that may be.
This one is super interesting and it comes up a lot in every campaign to varying degrees. 1. Scott is correct, just on the fundamentals, healing is so much weaker than damage that in a 1:1 trade off it almost always benefits to just do more damage in most scenarios. For example, my friend is playing a Paladin in a current campaign and he often cites the fact that he doesn't want to just use Smites all the time because it's boring. If he just wanted to do damage he could've been a Monk, Fighter or Barbarian, so he wants to play a class with versatility, but sometimes his abilities don't feel as powerful as just smiting things. 2. This is definitely a session zero issue. It should be pretty clearly laid out the things that you're going to try to avoid as a DM or player early on. But this is where I also preach flexibility. As a newer DM myself, it's not always easy to foresee every situation that might come up, so if something starts to break your campaign it should be able to be adjusted on the fly. In that same vein, I tell all my players that if we need to make a change to something that is class related, especially as a nerf, they shouldn't feel like they are stuck with something. I will offer every accommodation I can to make it so they don't feel they are being treated unfairly. Either I'll give them a minor magical item to make up for the nerf, or if they think it just fundamentally makes the class they play worse, I offer them the chance to choose a different class or re-evaluate how they want to build their character. There's almost always an easy enough solution. An example is one of the fighters in my campaign is playing a fighter with a special subtype that can be somewhat overpowered in certain circumstances. So as a DM I just have to be more clever and interesting in my tactics with my monsters and if my players find ways to get around these things with good planning or movements, I applaud them rather than getting angry and it is just a learning experience for me. And we generally always talk for a few minutes about things that worked and things that could've been different at the ends of sessions. 3. I understand that sometimes there is a different mindset when playing D&D. For me it's always Fun First, everything else is second. Things should be dangerous and exciting and interesting, but if we aren't having fun, then it's a mistake on my end. There are definitely DMs and players who take the game far more hardcore and seriously and that's totally fine as long as everyone understands the mentality going in. I'm more interesting in fun interactions, exciting combats and a good story. The number 1 thing I've learned as a DM the last few years is that the players really make the game. I set scenarios for them, but the players are what make it all happen. So find a good group and one that you trust and everything will generally be good. If there is a style clash and too many people are bending and stretching themselves to accommodate the feelings of the DM or several players it might not be a group that is going to stick around very long.
Love this! Awesome update. I very much enjoy the solution to leveling up not just being death based, but achievement based. Something that could also be interesting, which you might've already thought about is a boon/reward for actually surviving a given day before it resets. Like inspiration dice or a potion or other one-time use type item. Depends on the structure of the campaign, but could be cool to do. Of course it'll have to be worth more to the players to complete the objectives vs just surviving, but I could see it leading to interesting scenarios. Especially in a Race Against The Clock type situations where they are trying to complete something right close to the time the day would reset in a dangerous situation. Great update! Can't wait to see more of these.
Glad you are enjoying it! There definitely is an achievement planned for surviving the whole day.
It sounds very fun! I think I would personally be in favor of the "if you die the rest of the party moves on" because it makes the death have way more consequence, but I can also see how that could be quite frustrating to a player.
Thanks! Part of the death issue is that the party will regularly be facing encounters that are designed to be a few levels higher. With a good chance of killing off one or more characters. I don’t want that to feel too punitive if it happens often enough.
What a cute doggo. ❤
This guy was an absolutely terrible teacher. You can learn Netrunner using starter decks, without any knowledge of your deck or your opponent's. Play open-handed, demonstrating game concepts one at a time. Having her dig through all the available decks, study the cards before hand, and play a straight 1-v-1 standard, then--on top of that terribleness--get frustrated she's not playing up to the standards of a skilled player ... just ... AUGH!
Great points! There are definitely better ways to teach Netrunner.
I see you're a fan of Artisan Guild. I am too. If find their stuff actually fun to paint, which isn't true of most minis, and it's great for what I'm mostly interested in, which is rpgs and skirmish. For 40k, DakkaDakka is one that I think is worth checking out. Not so much for their patreon but their kickstarter campaigns. They have release a few complete 40k proxy armies, including ones for Sisters of Battle and Alpha Legion that I quite like.
Our next 3D Print video will likely be fantasy themed Patreons. Spoiler, Artisan’s Guild will be high on that list. I think they are the first Patreon I ever subscribed to, and I still regularly check in with. I haven’t done many Kickstarters for minis, though I have done a couple for terrain.
The other thing to point out is that the proxy lines are putting out new sculpts for things that GW hasn’t refreshed in forever. The Puppetswar Psychic Knight Strikers and the Silver Wardens are both much better Grey Knights than anything you can get from GW, for example.
Yeah! OPR is currently working on a line of ‘Space Dwarves’ which I’m pretty sure GW hasn’t produced in decades.
Hi Small Worlds, thanks so much for sharing this tutorial. I hope to try out making my own runes with it. ❤❤❤
If you do let me know! I would love to see it.
Good video hope you do well
Thanks!
Here from the algorithm! Insightful video sir, some good callouts. One patreon I’m supporting that isn’t mentioned is Diverging Realm. Makes great proxies for a few armies. Stationforge is also good value as you showed. As far as playing in the store, I agree with your take. I think as long as you’re supporting your FLGS in other ways it can be OK in most cases. I think you run into trouble when you are using proxies that are hard to keep track of, or the folks that are very vocal about their army being printed/have to ensure everyone hears their anti-GW sentiment while playing for free in a store that sells GW products. I personally cannot justify the prices for the kits hence I got into printing last fall, but I understand both sides of the argument. That said, if someone is interested in proxies closer to GW style, there is so much out there. With modern printers you almost couldn’t tell the difference; if someone wants to go that route.
I couldn’t agree more! It’s always polite to make sure in advance if proxies are allowed. And if I play in-store I always make sure to purchase some paints, snacks, or even a board game I may be interested in.
This is like an ASMR video.
Thanks very much for the inventor explanations! They are a bit overwhelming when trying to learn them from the rules. The sound at 14:32 when explaining Shigeru will haunt me in my dreams though.😅
Completely disagree with you on this game. Did not feel this game was overly complex at all and it sounded like you mostly had a hard time getting over the name of the game. But we’re all different.
Thanks! We love to hear other opinions. Grace definitely had an issue with the game’s name. There were edits of her ranting about it cut from the video. 😄
Can you still bind a book if you have to burn letters ?
Unfortunately no
inventor is a part of the game not an expansion , is part of the core game . the only expansions is the pets one
You are right, Scott called me on that after posting it. Thanks for the correction!
Kyle looks to be the most mischievous of all of them because he looks slightly younger than the others.
Steve might be cheeky enough to cause a Groundhog Day event.
Easy to follow and very informative!
I have never kickstarted a game but I have indeed been drawn in by art images. There can be a bit of dress up when it comes to that arena!
I love the breakdown on this. Like the commentary! Have you tried the High Priest Necromancer variant? Also, Battlestar Galactica is quite awesome!
We have not! We will have to check it out for sure. Battlestar was so good it made me want to watch the show. Lol
Awesome summation! Keep up the terrific work my friends!
This was a great series for October 2023, I look forward to seeing more!
I would go to the airport, start that global spread!
Brilliant!
But I’m already in a cult… I mean, a board game cult sounds pretty rad, to be honest haha.
We will start one lol hardest part would be coordinating people's schedules
I WAS NOT THE THING!!!
I mean....How were we to know lol
I still want to check this one out sometime. Hmm, New Zealand is my top pick as well!
It’s well worth playing!
Horrified is such a fun game. It's really fun, and easy to get new players because the rules are pretty straightforward. Each monster's puzzle is unique (smashing Dracula's coffins, researching a cure for the Wolf Man, or helping Frankenstein and the Bride learn how to go on a date). It's easy to see a story unfold as you and your friends try and stop the monsters and save the village. And if you are familiar with Universal's classic horror films there are a lot of nods and references to those movies.
Congrats! You are the winner of this weeks giveaway of Hako Onna. If you can comment back with your email we will connect on getting the game to you. YT can be a little hinky on listing emails so you can respond by doing it like: firstpartofemail on yahoo.
@@smallworldsbigadventures Thank you so much, but I'm afraid I am not interested in that particular game. Feel free to award it to someone else. Best of luck with your channel! I'll be sure to check out more of your reviews.
Bad boy!! Stop chewing the neighbor’s leg off!
I played the original betrayal once years ago and loved it and I ended up picking up a used copy of the Baulders Gate version. However I don’t think I’d ever play a legacy version enough for it to be worth it. As for your question, I would renovate the house so the ghosts have a nice place to live and would be happy and friendly haha. Then Airbnb that sucker hahaha
I’ve only been once, but I remember the Natural History Museum in DC being awesome. Random note about the game: I always get this, Arkham Horror, Eldritch Horror, and Mansions of Madness all mixed up in my head, even though they are all very different lol
Very relatable 😄
They're not my absolute favorite museums, but two that stand out are the University of San Diego Art History Museum was pretty great and the Getty Museum was fantastic, highly recommend if you enjoy sculpture and breathtaking scenery
Reverse Clue hahahah love it. Hmmm, I’d have to go with Ms. Scarlet since red is my preferred color haha
Scott usually prefers red too!
AH LCG is fantastic, though I think Lord of the Rings LCG just edges it out because of the theme.
I badly want to visit the Paris Catacombs or the Odesa Catacombs in Ukraine. The latter might not be possible anytime soon...
Thank you for the contest, I look forward to trying it out! I love your content and energy you bring to these games and your passion very much shines through!
I know that I would be so far off on so many clues hahah. As for ghosts, I ain’t afraid of no ghosts 😛
This is one of my favorite games. Probably top 10 all time, although I've never thought to make a list. The art is terrific. The gameplay, for me, is more frustratingly good than bad. I generally enjoy cooperative games more than antagonist games and the way this one is structured is quite fun. I do agree that I would like to see about 25 more picture cards added, just to increase replay-ability even more.
I totally agree with you and how frustratingly fun it is. We will be doing our top list of the games we reviewed on the 31st. So we will see if it makes our lists.
I like this game! Can’t wait to try the version I bought!
It is a lot of fun!
Magic: The Gathering, Deadlands, Star Trek: Dice Game and Seven Wonders stand out as my favorites. I think I remember Netrunner being good as well.
I love spicy white bread
