Learn Banish Misfortune - Trad Tutorial by James Finnegan
Do you have any transcription for the ornaments/extra notes you put in this one on the fast part? Bought the book and I'm trying to see where the ornamentation fits in.
Hi James, I tried to tune my G string to A on banjo tuner app, and it broke when it was nearly there. Do you have any notions on what I might have done wrong? Thanks for the tutorials btw, there so handy
Hi. I ordered this banjo buddy bookk a two weeks ago no sign of it yet????
Hi there! Many thanks for the purchase! Much appreciated! Feel free to let me know the order number and I’ll look into this for you! Feel free to email me directly at james.banjobuddy@gmail.com Many thanks again!
Oh I just bought this book and came stumbling across this book in youtube - in that order! :D NEAT!
Great tune and so well played. Thanks
Thank you Danny!
May your channel ever grow and expand. I love your book. I'd love to see some videos on how to chain these songs together. I've been linking lark in the morning and my darlings asleep but some traditions would be great to learn.
Great suggestion! Thanks Graham! Appreciate the kind words!

Hello James, Love your banjo lessons. I purchased your book on the 12 of October but so far I have not heard from the dispatch. Is there a problem? If you can let me know what is happening I would be very grateful. My details and email is on the invoice. What a video to get in my recommended #banjogoat
What fret and string is high c
Hi Des! The high C note is located on the 1st string (E string) at the 8th fret.
Received my Big Book the other day. It's great! Thanks so much for all the work that you put into it. Such a great resource for and instrument.
I love that you start with source recording references 😊
Thanks a million! 😊 I think that they bring so much life and authenticity to the tunes. Glad you enjoy it!
Brilliant stuff James. Variety in ornamentation in the session pace was beautiful to listen to
Thank you Donal! Appreciate the kind words!
🤩🤩 part D fast pace 😮💨😮💨👌🏻👌🏻 so good thank you
This is the way traditional Irish music should be thought
Thank you Kevin! Appreciate the kind words!☘️
Been waiting for this one, class! Absolutely love paddy reillys version of this tune
Thank you Jamie!🥳👍🏻
@@The_Banjo_Buddy loving the videos James, is Master Crowleys Reel in your book? And could you do it on your channel? I've been trying it for months and just cant get the hang of it. Thankyou 👍🏼
Hi, I just got your book yesterday and I am planning to start soon. To be honest i think i will start by following these videos as they will give me more confidence. I might spend too much time watching the notes on the book and lose the actual rhythm of the tune as a result. But I have both options now anyway , the videos and the book with the Dropbox MP3 Format, so hopefully I will be able to belt out a tune or two before the end of the year. On a side note, some of the titles of the 365 tunes are fascinating, the people who composed them and named them are amazing.,
Thanks for getting the book John! 😊 Combining the videos and book is the best approach. You'll have those tunes flowing in no time - happy playing!
Just ordered you big book yesterday. Thank you so much for this. I especially appreciate the ABC notation. I pay a Mandola open tuned to DADA, so it's really easy for me to find the notes that way. I visually lose track of lines when trying to read sheet music.
I have just purchased the book in the last 5 minutes, I am looking forward to receiving it and will try a new tune each week to see how I get on.
my late father used to play the banjo.irish and folk..hed be so happy im learning now.i got myself a 19 fret remo.second hand.its in g tuning.and started teaching myself..i love irish jigs .there my favorite.hornpipes are a tad more difficult..i started learning banjo properly with a teacher just over a year ago.but on a 5 string.a mix of music genres.i started without pics.. currently getting used to playing with now.. but id like to do more with my 19 fret banjo.and i think for me its the picking with a plectrum.that i need help with..any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.many thanks a banjo addict
Got to get this one ❤
Great hornpipe
Great book for anybody learning the Banjo!!!
Thanks a million! Appreciate the kind words!!
Great as always! Thanks, is that Brooklyn in the background?
Hi Robert. That's New Jersey in the background! I bought my banjo in Brooklyn though!
If only your wonderful book had chords instead of this very odd relentless naming of the notes etc. And jeez! Surely if somebody learns a few of these 365 tunes from your book they will then have at least an inkling of what the notes are called? Why give the note names on every tune? Are people stupid?
Thanks for the feedback! I get where you're coming from - I actually learned music using note names (ABCs) in my youth. This is the most popular learning method (alongside learning tunes by ear). Now, I naturally write out tunes in ABCs a lot faster than tab or stave notation. It’s just how my brain works! I've never written chord charts before - something I might consider adding in the future. Appreciate your thoughts!
Lovely tune James. Added to the list.
Hi James, excellent tutorial. What make banjo and head is that you’re playing? Cheers
Hi there! This is a Paramount Style A Model Tenor Banjo (1925).
Thanks for the reply. I have a 1924 leader. Is that a cloudy head? Or renaissance.
@@zachalleran9694 It's fitted out with a modern plastic head but otherwise largely original.
❤
James do you have a book published i would like to buy that. I want to learn tenor banjo
Thanks to you, James. I have almost conquered my banjo. I can now play number tunes off ,Tell me is the d u dd u very important when playing reels ??? This picking pattern is tricky to remember .
You are an excellent teacher, thanks James.
Your book has being a great help, without a doubt the best book for learning and your videos a big bonus.
Happy to hear that! Appreciate the kind words 🍀❤️
Well done banjo man
Thank you Brian!
Phenomenal! Thanks for sharing! Is that a JP banjo?
Thank you Kyle! Really appreciate the kind words. It’s an 1925 Paramount Style A.
Hi James, great channel and your book looks fantastic I’m definitely gonna purchase a copy. Do your charts for each song indicate the harmony (chord changes)?
Hi there! Thank you for the question! Throughout the entire collection, tunes are presented in their simplest form, without adding many variations or chord changes. The tunes look very similar to how they're presented in the videos. Hope this helps!
Great job 👏
Thanks a million Tony! Appreciate the kind words!
Brilliant tune. The ornamentation is unreal. Is that in your book?
Hi! Thanks a lot for the kind words - very much appreciated! Throughout the entire collection, each tune is presented in its simplest form, without ornamentation. I might consider adding embellishments in a later edition, but the content is quite vast already without adding more pages! Thanks for reaching out!
It’s a great book! When I got it, the first thing which impressed me was the amount of resources it has. Many thanks to you for putting it together, it will no doubt become a collector’s item!
Thanks a million for the kind words and for the purchase! It is very much appreciated!
One of my favorite tunes. Thanks James!!!
I found an old Ludwig Capitol 4 string and could not pass it up! I think it's from around early 1930's. But I'm more of a 5 string and 6 string guy
Sounds like a great find! Enjoy playing your new (old!) banjo!🍀
Great video. Not what I expected when I was looking up “how to bury my wife and dance on her grave” but still enjoyable.
😂😂😂
What a title! 😂
😅😅 Great tune! Not a great name!😅
@@The_Banjo_Buddy I mean I’ll never forget it! Haha plus Irish (and therefore American Country Music which is descended from it) always has a way of peppering the darker motifs of life with happy lyrics or titles. They say the Irish don’t oft sing a happy song, but they can sing a sad song happy. Greeting from Canada! Our shared culture is still alive and well in some places! 🇨🇦🇮🇪
Thank you! Really appreciate you tuning in! 🍀🇨🇦
This was awesome. I love the sound clips and all the context. Great job man!
Thank you Jeff! Really appreciate the kind words!
Great work James!
Thank you Benjamin! Very much appreciated.
LOVE how you present each tune. Subscribed.
