I wonder if Mr Lynas would consider visiting Fukushima to see the impact of nuclear power before so readily dismissing it. I found this video because I support his view about minimizing temperature increases caused by climate change. I agree that energy decisions should be made on a rational basis, and that it is possible that some nuclear technology has a place in that. But having lived in Japan since 2009, I believe the hazards demonstrated in Fukushima should not be underestimated.

I am more concerned about us currently diminishing our own chances of survival ON this planet (which, more or less, means our chances of survival as a species in the universe, since so far, we don't have an alternative to this planet).

I am not very concerned for our planet. I think our planet will be just fine. Even if we would try to blow it up by our complete arsenal of nuclear weapons, we might succeed in extinguishing the human species, as well as a couple of other contemporary species too. But seriously - nature will come up with new species, mutants. Genetic material will survive, and it will find a new way of materializing as life.
