Hi there! I have been a freelance flutist for a long time (in Portland, Dallas, Chicago, Milwaukee & Honolulu) playing in everything between community orchestras to full time professional orchestras. I’ve done so many cool gigs like playing R Kelly’s bday party at a Chicago steakhouse & playing in the backing orchestra for The Who, and playing both in the pit and backstage Banda at Lyric Opera of Chicago. I want to share the things I’ve learned along the way on how to stay in the « freelance game ». Music performance majors are taught mostly how to master their instrument & audition for a full time orchestra. Almost nothing is taught about the practical reality of freelancing- which is most likely what you’ll be doing in life as a musician.

If you want to have a career as a professional orchestral player, you need to have the training that often involves getting a Master of Music Degree. This video covers a few reasons why maybe you don’t necessarily need that Masters Degree.

My uncle Tony had a Polish Band! He played a lot of gigs in that kind of atmohere! I loved the accordions!
@@lotsabirds very cool! 🪗
@@hawaiiflute I had a fun life! Beer Barrel Polka to Beethoven to Bach to Barbershop and everything in between! Music has been very good to me!😊

@@lotsabirds oh really! Huge Polish community in Chicago👍
@@hawaiiflute yep! Dad's family was Irish, my mother's parents were from Poland and there's a little Italian mob in the family too! Lol!
An aside question..., what earplugs are you using?
@@garysonyalouzon8117 I use custom earplugs - Westone brand. Highly recommend👍
I play in a community orchestra, and it's demoralizing when you see full grown adults behave like children. I guess age does not equal emotional maturity
@@Titanandenceladus so true
It is crazy that people who have the high level positions have such low maturity/emotional intelligence.
That’s actually a C#. To play a D this is the keys to them LH3, LH4, TH, RH1, and RH2. Or also you can do the same fingerings just without the LH4 fingering. It could be either or.
How things have changed....sad in some ways.

As someone who has sensory issues, I can theoretically understand having a problem with a strong scent BUT I’m not going to do a sniff test on every person to point out the “witch” to be burned 🙄

You are the street smart freelance independent musician we all admire.
@@episnod haha:)). My freelance street smarts are that I keep my mouth shut. 😁
I agree with you! We called them prima dona!
The story where the musician hijacked the piece by playing the solo ridiculously slow is hilarious 😹
@@jestemqiqi7647 I’ll never forget the look on the conductors face. 😆
It's always sad and a bit scary when someone is too flaky to be a musician...
Forget the theory’s, how good of a musician was he. You look like you’ve been playing long enough to know that musicians never get along anyway. John Nash was mentally ill but managed to come up with probable gaming theory. George Patton was nutty but was a decent poet and one of the greatest generals of his day. If Bach or Mozart were around today I’m not sure they wouldn’t have been labeled complete nuts. A lot of history is full of conspiracy theorists. Copernicus and his ridicules ideas about the sun being the center of the solar system. Or that Pythagoras guy who started a religion saying that you could talk to god using mathematics. I’d bet you consider yourself to be a non judgmental person. 🙄
That part is insane! Thankfully I'll never have to play it in amateur orchestra.
@@jimdunleavypiano haha! You’re safe! 😄
Fun fact - Louise Di Tullio who has over 1000 film credits as a principal flutist recording session musician in Los Angeles who has played for high-profile film composers including Alfred Newman, Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Lalo Schifrin and of course John Williams has said that score of Hook, which Louise still mentions as the most challenging music she has ever performed and sight read during her long career a studio musician. “John Williams always pushes the limit of his orchestra with every new score,” said Louise, “keeping his players on the edge while creating a great sense of excitement.”
@@JAG4488 love this fun fact!
Never heard of this one, I'll have to look up a performance. I've been curious about this book so I might have to buy it. That sound clip.... lots going on there! Thanks!
Thank you again. My next wish: Indiana Jones or Johann Strauss II - Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka 😉
@@dennisfischer6860 those are good suggestions. Let me see if I can get ahold of that music, and I’ll def do videos for those. And fyi -my piccolo is out of commission and going in for an overhaul mid-Sept so probably won’t have any videos done until late Sept. Thx!
Music degree is useless unless you want to teach in a university level which is too competitive. Better go to the medical field and do music on the side. I had a bachelor degree in cello performance and couldn’t find a decent paying job for 3 years. Took Radiology for 3 years and became a Cardiac Ultrasound Tech now making over $150K a year and playing the cello in the side . Best decision I ever made.
@@Will67267 I hear you. Thank you for your input - this is really what Music Majors need to hear. I’m always trying to get the point across that, at best, music majors will end up freelancing. And that’s not very sustainable.
I would also say that there's the question of once you finish your education, where will you work. This country does not by and large, prize classical music in the same way that, say, Europe does. A friend's son recently completed his musical education in Canada, so he doesn't have huge if any debt. However he faced the reality that working in classical music is very arduous, and you may, if you do find a job, wind up 'stitching' together three different jobs a day to earn a living, and it won't be a great living. None of these part time jobs will have benefits nor will they have pensions or things like 401ks. Better instead to learn a European language. because in Europe, there are tons and tons of small orchestras, and the odds of getting a job playing classical music for a living are far better than they are here.
@@mmeeddddddozzzzzzz3421 yes, this is a big issue in America. I am one of those people that had stitched together an income along with no health care, retirement funds or savings. I will address this in a future video, but the topic is often ignored for some reason.
I specifically remembered this excerpt from the red book, where it says even if you cant play the 2nd half quietly, you have to give the impression of playing quietly
@@Titanandenceladus perfect advice 👍😁
I agree with your commentary. May I also add that getting a Master's in exactly the area you studied in your BA (to me) feels a bit repetitive and unnecessary because you've already been through it, so really you would only be doing a continuation of the same thing. I think it'd be better to get a Master's in a different area like Education or Composition (if possible), that way, your BA and Master's can provide you with two different sets of possibilities and opportunities in the workplace. Specially in an industry where 1st flute spots and such are quite limited. 💜
@@midnightmoth1 good point - you are doing a continuation of the same thing. But for lots of people, that continuation with a different teacher & higher expectations, etc can be the difference between plateauing as a player after your Bachelors or continuing to excel as a player. I know if I did not get a Masters degree, I wouldn’t be half the player I am today, and probably would’ve quit music altogether. I see what your saying, though, about taking the opportunity to expand into a different speciality. And that is definitely the better choice to have more options for employments. Thanks for your input!
@@hawaiiflute Sure! And thank YOU for the content 💜
Great! Great! Great! Thank you!
Are there any alternatives for high A? I struggle with that the most for some reason. It’s always sharp
@@kaikawamura8361 unfortunately, no alternate fingerings for high A. If you are having issues, it could be that your right hand pinky is coming off. High A won’t sound very well if pinky is up.
@@kaikawamura8361 I just realized you mentioned it being sharp. No alternate fingering to bring it down, unfortunately. Could pull head joint out a bit more- and see if rest of the notes aren’t too flat. P
I think videos on specific orchestral excerpts would be very interesting. Such as the Prokofiev Symphony 1, Mov IV.
Yes, agreed. I will try to add flute excerpt videos soon, but I do have an existing series of Practice Guides for (mostly) orchestral piccolo parts.

Since you're in Hawaii, do you ever find yourself traveling to one of the other islands? The book sounds entertaining. How about a nightmare story of arriving at the performance venue and realizing that you've left your instrument at home? This happened to me once when I was doing a gig with a friend. We were playing duets for something, I don't even remember what it was, and we met at her apartment for a quick hour to go over our music, etc... We quickly packed up for the drive across town and when we arrived I realized OH MY GOD I left my flute at her apartment! Luckily another friend of mine who lived close by was home and brought me her beautiful flute to use. Someone could write a book just on musicians worst nightmares!!

So lemme get this straight there is 4 D’s D4 needs that low C roller so how do you get the extra high D out without that roller?
@@RobbieWallace-qg2yj it’s not a true high high D. The piccolo can’t actually play high D (you’re right about the roller), but composers still write high D sometimes. This is a trick to get a squeak that passes for high D:)

@@eduardoberrini5999 gracias!
In my years I have found it very difficult to even get an audition with a regional or community orchestra. The flute sections are often locked up with two or three flute players who have been playing there forever and don't have any plans of leaving anytime soon. This was my experience many many years ago with a community orchestra that I wanted to get into. I contacted the administration office, and then my name and contact info was discarded until about a year later when I received a call from the conductor who was outraged that I was brushed off by the personnel manager. The conductor invited me to play for their committee, I was accepted but then had to split the principal chair with the daughter of the outgoing principal flute. It was a cordial arrangement but I never truly felt welcomed, and eventually I resigned.
@@michaelschonauer7238 unfortunately, that sounds like a common scenario for community orchestras. Especially for flutes, bc there are so many of us. For regional orchestras, you have to make yourself known to the Principal flute, usually play for them or do some kind of audition to get on the sub list. Then you wait and hope to be called.
True Story: at a job I once held (NOT in the midwest….should narrow this down quickly for you, Julia), We had to find the trombone section….SECTION……..at a concert. It was a conductor search concert so there was a change in conductors as it was, and the conductor had already walked out for his piece…..he was ad libbing with the audience, while we (production team) had to run around and find them.
