    I needed to know why they couldn’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for most of the mainline Trains so that they could extend the unused abandoned underground train stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock which will include the class 507, class 508, class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign all of them into an overhead wire line trains and also make most of them into Five carriages per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Cummins M11, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXCT, Gardner 6LXB, Scania N112, Gardner LG1200 and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 6 Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 10 Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 507, class 508, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into 11 carriages per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers? A Stock Train and 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it even much more Larger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Railway tunnel into a High-Speed Railway lines? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Railway line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. Then put the modernised 11 carriages per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 carriages per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 47 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project if that will be OK for London Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from the Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden more Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly Line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street can they also make another brand new underground train station in Chingford and could they extend the Piccadilly Line and the DLR right up to Chingford? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 114, 105, and 117, will be replaced by all of the Cummins M11, Gardner 6LXCT, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Scania N112, Gardner LG1200 and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1963 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and can they order Every 46 Octagon and Every 88 Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.14 and unique small no.13 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 147MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 147MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units, can they use those Deltic class 46’s Deltic class 44’s, Deltic class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!!!!!!!, oh can you make all of those 18 Tonne Boxes of Coal for all of those 147MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!!!!!!!!!! So please make sure that the Builders can do as they are told!!!!!!!! And PLEASE do something about these very very important Professional ideas Please? 17:15 that's what makes me curious about British air brake controllers: It seems like none of them have predefined brake levels. You always have to jump between release, fill and lap. So, if you want to brake at 4 Bar in the main brake line (releasing 1 Bar from the standard 5 Bar brake line pressure), you have to release air from the brake line and watch the pressure decreasing, until it reaches 4 Bar. Then you have to put the brake lever to the lap position. On a German Knorr controller, you can just put the lever into notch 5 and it automatically keeps the brake line pressure at about 4 Bar. The British way was ditched at least 70 years ago.

      On these trains there are two braking systems essentially. The fail-safe automatic air brake and the electro-pneumatic brake. The former can only be increased gradually in application, any release must be a full release. The EP system can be fully graduated and will hold at the application level chosen. This video is some years old, no trains in mainline service in the UK use a braking system set-up like this today. Indeed most multiple units have a system exactly as you describe with fixed braking steps (3 or 6 are standard depending on type) and mostly fully electro-pneumatic with no through air pipe. The newest trains tend to have fully variable brake controls, rather than fixed steps now.

    Thanks for sharing! I wonder how often the non ep brake was actually used in practice. I mean there is one comment about a driver intentionally disabling the ep brake to get the cozy old timer's feeling. But, would a normal driver ever have to resort back to the non ep air brake? Or would ep brake failures be so rare that they would never happen to the average driver?

    • @stoatsngroatsuk5012
      @stoatsngroatsuk5012 27 дней назад

      I can tell you that most drivers, most of the time would use the EP brake. Only those under assessment with a manager, or following a failure of EP brake, or those wishing to maintain their skill would use the Auto brake. The auto brake required a higher level of skill to provide a safe, comfortable and on-target stop, due to the full release (and delay to re-apply) when compared with the EP brake, which could allow the driver to reduce the amount of brake force incrementally without running out of air. HTH. (EX SR driver/Instructor!Driver Standards Manager).

    • @SapienzBuchse
      @SapienzBuchse 27 дней назад

      @stoatsngroatsuk5012 Thank you! Sounds like the auto brake was part of the training and drivers did at least have some experience with it when they encountered an ep brake failure.

    • @stoatsngroatsuk5012
      @stoatsngroatsuk5012 26 дней назад

      @@SapienzBuchse definitely part of training, and you had to be competent with auto brake before being passed to drive. In practice though , because EP braking was easier and more forgiving, most drivers only used this, and some would hardly ever use Auto, meaning on their 2-yearly driving assessment, might not have the most gentle of stops! These days of course, things are quite different.

    • @SapienzBuchse
      @SapienzBuchse 26 дней назад

      @@stoatsngroatsuk5012 Thanks for your insights. Would one have to turn off the ep brake beforehand to use the auto brake or would it automatically stop working once the lever is moved forward to the Lap position or beyond? From operating the lever it appears to me to be impossible to get auto brake without a full service application of the ep brake first.

    • @stoatsngroatsuk5012
      @stoatsngroatsuk5012 26 дней назад

      @@SapienzBuchse in the area I worked we had 2 types of stock, suburban EPBs and Main Line EPBs. The suburban trains had a 5 position brake handle giving EP brake between release and full service (50psi of brake pressure), position 3 was Lap, position 4 was venting the brake pipe (to apply the brake) and position 5 was a full emergency brake position. When using EP brake you would place the brake handle at any position between 1 & 2, and increase or reduce the applied pressure by moving the lever forward or backwards as required. To use Auto brake, a smart single move,ent from release to Lap would effectively isolate the EP brake side of things ( not completely though - you would trap a small pressure in the brake cyclinder, 1-5psi depending on how smartly you moved the brake handle!) From the lap position you would move the lever forward to position 4 and apply (only) the brake - you could add a little by moving the lever forward and then back to lap. On the other main lien stock, a switch operated EP or Auto. This stock had 3 positions: released, full application and emergency. In EP the same operation as the 5 position brake had on the EP section, plus emergency. In Auto, the same as the Lap- position 4 element of the 5 position brake. I hope this is easy to understand? It is many years since I drove either of these - over 25 years in fact, but the details in this video was what we learned in the mid 1980s - plus much more detail -the valves inside the brake chest, how the triple valve works, etc. so that we could identify faults and either rectify them or isolate sections of the train to enable the safest movement possible. I had a brake failure with a 12-car train, and was able to identify fairly quickly the fault, and to make an isolation which enabled me to move the train forward from a different cab, placing my guard at the front and keeping in contact with him by cab-cab communication. We had only a 20 minute delay, and that was good because my train fault had caused an unreleasable brake failure with 5 of the 12 coaches still inside a tunnel, and the rest outside!

    We had Driver at our depot always wanted HIS units in the straight air brake when ever he was driving ! I am a top driver ! I'm old school . I don't use EPB I always have it in air brake . Anyway he came to collect a set of empties ! The shunter couples them together and then I don't know what happened with the the brake test !! A lot of drivers said " no brake test to the Guard or shunter I want to get going quick ! ( but not with me I always insisted on a brake test no matter what ! ) he takes the set of empties out in the automatic air brake NOT the EPB . But what he didn't know was that the shunter had failed to open up the cocks between the front portion and the rear portion !! He had forgotten them . The rear of the train was a " Swinger ! " . When he applied the auto brake only the front portion of the train was braking . The rear portion was dead weight and had no brakes .,It was just pushing on the front portion during braking ! Had he been in EPB , it wouldn't have been a problem because the brakes with have been functioning on the whole train ! Long story short - about ten minutes into the journey he had a SPAD ! He had to Fess up ! He had deliberately been in auto brake not EPB !! Nearly at retirement , long service history with no incidents or previous SPADS . Excellent service and disciplinary record over 50 years . He was given a severe reprimand and a final warning ! This happen in about the late 90s or early 00s ,before slam door stock was withdrawn anyway !

      Interesting story, lucky driver. I have read about incidents from Germany and Switzerland with skipped brake tests. One was even an official simplified procedure that was then hastily reverted. Excellent production. The older trains both Surface and tube standard stock had character. I'm glad there was a shot of the stock movement on the old Highgate branch. I've always thought that it's abandonment was a lost opportunity, especially since it was already in situ, the work had started, and there has been a huge increase in housing around the Muswell Hill area. It could have potentially fulfilled some of the aims of "Crossrail 2".

    Just thinking in 1991 my old man if he was on shift that day at London Bridge prob signalled that ECS move from London Bridge to Cannon St as he was assigned to the "widowmaker" aka plats 1-6 London Bridge panel so called as during rush hour was a horrendous duty... Nice to see ol' Cannon St signalbox still standing and of course Borough Markets mini box before it was removed to the national museum. Been in both with the old man and drunk the tea hehe I even visited Tooley St signalbox back in 71 after we had watched the last steam train to go through up to Cannon St, old man was at Charlton back then reliefing up and down the sections.

    Is slightly misleading on the lap, in real terms it means the brake shoes are just touching the tyre or wheel rim but applying no pressure but any pressure would cause instant brake force, lap is easier to say than ready to brake and because of the self adjusting nature of the shoes you always got solid brake force even if the shoes and tyre are worn and due service.

      I don't think that is correct. Lap means that the train pipe is completely isolated. Neither air is fed into it from the main reservoir, nor is pressure released. [1] This means that the brake cylinder pressure is kept constant. This could be no pressure, a pressure that makes the brake pads barely scrape the wheels or full service pressure (50psi). In the video the fail safe classic air brake is controlled the old school way. In comparison, the ep brake is simple to operate. The driver selects a position and the electronics will set the corresponding brake cylinder pressure. For the failsafe brake, the controller has these positions: - Release: Refill the train pipe until it reaches the max pressure of 70 psi. - Lap: Keep the train pipe at the current pressure. - Auto Service: Slowly reduce train pipe pressure. - Emergency: Reduce train pipe pressure as fast as possible. How does the driver brake using this system? If the train is coasting along, the train pipe is at 70psi and the controller is in Release. To start braking, the engineer now moves the lever to Auto Service and watches the train pipe manometer. When the train pipe manometer reaches it's desired value, for example 60psi, the engineer moves the lever to Lap. The train is now constantly braking with 25 psi brake cylinder pressure, until further action by the driver. If the driver wants to brake harder, he can move the lever to Auto Service again and move it back to Lap once the desired train pipe pressure is reached. If the engineer wants to stop braking, he moves the lever to Release and the train pipe slowly fills up to max pressure, releasing a brakes after just a couple of psi of increase. If the engineer wants to continue braking but at a lesser rate, he is out of luck. These air brakes don't have graduated release, so even a small release will instantly release them fully. He then needs to reapply them. If he reapplies them before the train pipe is back to max pressure, the will work with less brake power. If he does that a couple of times, he has an unbraked train. That last bit about the train becoming unbrakeable is why these brakes without graduated release are called exhaustible. [1] Some modern controllers actually keep train pipe pressure constant instead of isolating it. This avoids pressure loss due to leaks in the train. I can't say if the trains in the video have this or not.

      I can tell you how it is on a Knorr controller: you have the levels Release blow Release Cutoff/Lap 1A 1B 2-8 Emergency What you describe is the level 1A, where the brake shoes are brought onto the weels, but no brake force is applied. This makes the brake react much faster. The driver should use this level to keep the brake ready for a quick stop when shunting.

  • @dodgydruid
    @dodgydruid 29 дней назад

    Well two failsafes if the EPB fails, you have the air brake and the capstan or hand brake if all else fails which is what a secondman's duty was about as well as spotting signals in difficult terrain but rarely did the capstan ever get applied and was usually locked in free mode, seem to remember the guards brake also had a capstan on some units.

      If you want to pass your traction exam, you'll need to know all this and learn about juice supply, motor control, jumpers between coaches,fusesand changing fuses, brake faults, traction faults , emergency coupling procedures and handbrake and motor generator and compressor locations under different scenarios,,brake testing, driving from other than a leading cab, and shoe fuse changing/isolating units using paddles. This isn't overcomplicated, you need to know and understand this shit. Thirty five years later, because it was drummed into me by blokes who'd forgotten more about emut stock than I ever learned, I still do.

When it comes to train brakes, plus the backup system for if things went wrong, it helps if you know what’s going on 👍🏼

    This film was made to mark the first 50 years of London Transport, celebrated in Golden Jubilee events in 1983. In style it followed British Transport Films as it uses much material shot by BTF. The music by Kenneth Victor Jones, regularly engaged as composer for BTF titles, was digitally recorded by session musicians in All Saints Tooting Graveney where the acoustic gave the sound an open feeling. As producer it was great fun to make this film with friends from London Transport and BTF
