I think all the time about his low empathy symptoms. He's such a good portrayal of a low empathy autistic character. He cares about people, but he consistently fails to have an appropriate emotional response to distress (sometimes seeming to fail to pick up on it entirely). He makes no move to comfort Charlotte when she's visibly on the edge of tears; not because he doesn't care about her (he tries to help her in the scene with the cops, notably) but he's focused on other things and she's not ASKING him to do anything so he just. Doesn't respond. She even does the neurotypical/socially acceptable "asking for reassurance without asking for it" when she says that she must seem silly -- this is a classic call for someone to say, "No, I totally get why you're upset!". Paul completely misses this and seems to take it at face value. He's just sooooo...

At my old job, I created a script to use with the customers, complete with conversation trees. My manager never noticed until I told her. It blew her mind. It was actually surprising how few people noticed.

For the whole Paul being happy to not like musicals/Paul maybe actually liking musicals thing, I think that could be tied to how defining yourself based on your hobbies or on the things nt people force you to constantly introduce yourself with (icebreakers are the bane of my existence) as well as heavy masking can both lead autistic people to have a hard time understanding or defining themselves/their personalities properly and therefore latch onto one defining thing even when they grow as a person and the one thing doesn’t apply anymore (I say this as an autistic person who has experienced this exact feeling)

God, one of the drama clubs at my college (my friend id in it, which is why I went) just performed this and I immediately went, "Oh he's just like me for real" lol

I don't think you understand. Abstinence Camp is my drug. This version of Lautski is the best possible way you can make your audience fall in love with a couple and root for them in a concise ~30 minutes. Nick as pete is also...magical. We don't talk about how good an actor Nick is, not just at comedic stuff but at being slightly more serious too, like he is here. He just completely and wholeheartedly understands his characters. And this shyer, more flustered Steph...I love them so much. Obviously all the love to Joey too!! His singing voice as Pete is incredible!!

Came across this by accident, and i do not mean to be rude even if this comes off that way, but this video just seems like an extreme stretch to the point where it's very visible that you are grasping at straws to prove that Paul is autistic. I do not know if you have autism, but if you do, it is totally fine to relate to a character who is allistic, it doesn't disprove your autism. There is this terrible trend in fandom where people will armchair their favorite characters with whatever they have just because they relate to them. Fuck, i have seen it in real life where people will just armchair their friends and random people they only know on a speaking basis like classmates or teachers because of one odd behaviour that they also have due to their illness or disability. This just medically pathologizes normal human behaviours like for example disliking certain things or being slightly blunt. Throughout watching tgwdlm i never even considered the option that any of the characters could be neurodivergent, especially autistic, because they simply do not fit the criteria to be considered that. And throwing that aside, none of them struck me as such, because they behave like neurotypical individuals and you can very clearly see that they were not intended to be autistic or even autist coded. Videos like this make me concerned for the future when it comes to autism awareness because if armchairing is so prevelant now, how will it be in 5-10 years? I am geniuenly scared that soon people will start proclaiming that they are "neurospicy" and "acoustic" (or whatever other slur that will rise in the meantime) just because they have a hobby or bite down with their jaw when nervous WHICH IS A TOTALLY NORMAL BEHAVIOUR FOR A NERVOUS PERSON, and says nothing about their neurotype. Also many autism sympotms can also come from different things, for example c-ptsd is often misdiagnosed as autism and vice-versa. There is geniuenly no shame in liking or relating to a mentally abled character as a disabled person, there is also no shame in being mentally abled. This is just a display of pathologization of normal behaviours and also a bastardization of autism as a diagnosis.

Also, off-topic, but I love how TGWDLM subverts the trope of "turning on a radio or tv and getting just the info you need/what's going on in the plot" by having Paul listen/watch news that are completely unrelated to the musical apocalypse, and turning off the tv right as the relevant news are about to startXD I know this trope exists because of how important it is to be concise and conservative in how you decide to orchestrate the time spent in media, but Starkid's subversion of the trope was done really well and Peanuts makes me happy

12:36 personally ive always interpret this as Paul hating physically going to theaters to see musicals - he probabaly doesn't like being around in a crowd and seeing people sing/dance in front of him. Meaning he could like animated musicals if he watched them at home. Or maybe he just likes that specific Moana song and not the movie lol.
