For those interested: there was a lot more to the SS El Faro sinking. The El Faro was described as a “rust bucket” with various parts literally flaking off, and the people who discovered the ship were astounded that it was even let off the dock in its state. The captain, Michael Davidson, took few precautions before sailing into the hurricane. This indifference, his seeming unwillingness to change course as the hurricane moved when suggested by his officers, and weather information that was significantly out of date by hours due to faulty equipment led to Captain Davidson mustering his crew far too late for them to attempt to fix any issues or even reach the lifeboats before the ship sank. As the video showed, an undetected open hatch on the side of the ship let water into the cargo hold, causing the ship to tilt, and decreasing the oil pressure in the engine, killing any kind of propulsion, and leaving the ship to its fate. The SS El Faro wasn’t sunk by a hurricane. It was lost entirely due to human error.
