Rare Bird - 'King Kong' - audio recording at Deutschlandhalle, Berlin, Germany, 11 September 1970
'King Kong' is a Frank Zappa composition, first appearing on the 1969 Mothers Of Invention album, Uncle Meat. Rare Bird's line-up was Graham Field on organ, David Kaffinetti on electric piano through a fuzzbox, Mark Ashton on drums, and Steve Gould on bass guitar. They never attempted to record this in a studio, so a live recording is the only way we can ever experience it - not a high-quality recording, but it's the best we have, unless someone somewhere has a better recording.

This song was almost immediately followed by Another Season Again, but that one goes out of focus too many times for me to include here.

This song was originally on Miller's first solo album, 'Bright City.' Apologies for the occasional blurring of the images, but at least the sound is okay. The line-up was Miller Anderson, guitar & vocals; Bob Brookes, harmonica & vocals; Derek Auston, keyboards; Jeremy Sherman, bass guitar; Chris Hunt, drums; Com Bon de Sousa, percussion.

I decided not to start recording Echoes because of how long I would have to try to hold my camera still, but about half-way through it was so good that I began to. So my apologies to the musicians and everyone else for there only being the second part. If I ever go see the band again I'll try to record the whole thing.

I noticed when the song began that the sound was a bit muted, but by the end it seemed louder. A great start to the concert, and it was followed by three other Syd Barrett compositions, Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, and Remember Me.

I had their album in 1971 and aam saddened we parted ways. I can still see the cover art in my head
Ruined
Would love to see Nick play just like I was able to see Steve Hackett playing old Genesis. Pleasure not having Roger Waters there and maybe Nick and I could have a drive in one of his Ferraris after the show...
80 and still rockin'
First
Just heard this great song on Boom Radio and just had to listen to it again. The Merseybeats sound just as good as they did all those years ago.
My favourite song...ever! And always will be. 🥰
awsome job
Billy has retired
❤❤❤👍👍👍🧙♂🧙♂🧙♂
Stunning
Superb
It's a shame the Keyboard is lost in the mix listening on my tablet
Etheridge put down a groove on this one
👍Have they released a CD?
Most recent studio CD was Open Doors (2023). There was a live CD in 2020 - Live at the Baked Potato - with John Etheridge. and Theo Travis from the current line-up.
@@arcadianCA I saw The Baked Potato CD but missed the Open Doors, thanks
Thanks for this upload and your SHF link. I'll watch your others too
👏👏👏
Great stuff! Thanks for posting!
French, Boltz. . .Rock on. .
always a fav of mine, great Tony vocals
Один из лучших синглов atomic rooster..
Номер 11 в чарте Великобритании
I saw them last december in Zoetermeer, NL. Thanks, guys.

Wow so good.even better than the 60s version. ❤❤❤
Steve Botlz getting it done
I was there too, sitting right in front of John Etheridge. A brilliant evening!
You must have been just to my left. Best seats in the house!
Great set supporting Long Ryders in Brum. Defo keep eye out for future gigs
Fantastic
Murry from Old 97s on bass!
Die Antwort. Kommt.😢😢😢😢😢😢
Danke. Fürs Senden
Of all the 70's come back bands, Atomic Rooster.., to me, are by far the most authentic and best I've seen and heard. Steve Bolton has not lost anything and Pete French is still an awesome vocalist...to the younger pick up members of the band..be thankful...be grateful, you'll not see the like again
I was very impressed by the band that evening, excellent musicianship throughout and a very professional show, and all five looked to be enjoying being on stage. Adrian Gautrey's organ playing was terrific.
Wonderful
Where's Billy Kinsley?
Retired?
Happy retirement Billy you played with the group as long as I can remember.
brilliant, only brilliant tune!!!
Fabulous tune
Saw these in London a few days back and they were fantastic!
Agreed. I'd never heard of them before, but made sure I got their CD after the show.
Tony Crane you still a class act
Love this Gabriela
I would love to hear you on stage again, may be you find (some day) some time to spend in Hilden ;-)...sry for not writing in French...my skills in this language are pretty much not available lol
GREAT SOUND
What a band. Two unique albums, with two different singers. Dreamy, melodic, inventive, poetic, eclectic pop. I will always cherish them.
There will be some live dates in the UK by the first line-up later this year, and new recordings too.
@@arcadianCA Wow!
@@stellwegleestvoor3562 They did 7 gigs in 2022, performing all the songs on Slow To Fade at each gig, and they've been writing new material for this year.
@@arcadianCA Really looking forward to the (release of) new material.
@@stellwegleestvoor3562 I will let you know when there is any news, or if you have Facebook, check out Red Guitars there.
Saw them first at the Cavern! These are impostors, though.
??????????????
@@sylviapilgrim6059 I apologize; I'm getting old and thought that none of these guys were with the originals, but Tony Crane, lead singer, certainly was an original. Not sure about the others. Before seeing this video, I hadn't seen them since ' 66.
@@barneyronnie Tony's son is playing keyboards.
brilliant tony
Why, please explain.
terrific stuff, they've definitely still got the sound!
Thanks for uploading this. Really missing the band live. ❤
Just as good as they were in the sixties !
Unfortunately none of the members currently in the band were in the original 60s lineup and of that lineup only the drummer is alive today.
@@andrewwinton4608 Tony Crane (singer) and Billy Kinsley are founding members from 1961 and current drummer joined in 1974 ?
@@djk3520 Embarrassing - for some reason I was getting them mixed up with The Fourmost. No idea why - maybe because they were both from Liverpool around that time. Anyway yes you're right.
@@djk3520 Billy Kinsey, Bob Packham, & Lou Rosenthal have both left the group, Tony Crane is the only original member left. They do sound great though.
Used to see them MANY years ago around Manchester, & I'm sure they're just as good now. Tony still looks good!!!
As good as ever, for me they were the best of the Mersey bands. Go Tony ✌💙
God Damn this is absolutly Fantastic and pure 80s sound, thanks a lot for posting !!!
I've been waiting for someone to post this to RUclips since the advent of RUclips. Thank you!
@ Michael White. Earlier this year I got the video transferred from a Virgin Records VHS promo tape that I'd bought in the late 1980s. A lot of the tape had gone mouldy by the time I got round to transferring it, but luckily the part of the tape with the video was untouched.
love this song
