It's not just concerts, workshops, and serious stuff at the Blowout. Andy Stevens has put together a few scenes of the other things that goes on, such as the Friday and Saturday night sessions, impromptu sessions, and the Saturday night Bal, but starting with the Friday night competition. This year's subject was biscuits, and nuts! Extra points were awarded for singing.

Moi ben rapariga, gustóu-me.
I have played that first tune many time but cannot remember the name. I wish the names of the tunes would be posted along with the video.
Valse Nouvelle (Bouffard), I hope someone posts the name of the 2nd one.
nice playing David!
Such beautiful playing! So glad this was recorded. But the pipes are in F not B flat :)
Wonderful.
Show 🎉
Music matches the landscape. Sounds almost Scandinavian…..
I love it! Anyone could tell me the name of the song, please??
What kind of pipes are these?

Well played all 🙂Happy days!

Listening to this quartet was a highlight of the weekend for me - absolutely brilliant!
Absolutely loved this and the layers of harmony towards the end. Brilliant!
left to right is: David Asbrink, Ross Calderwood, Caleb Wilson and Nicholas Konradsen (myself)
What key are the pipes in? C?
Yes it's C. Nick has tuned his gurdy to C as well.
Jeremy Kingsbury (on RUclips) sent me to this video. Thanks! I just received my first set of Pipes. Morrison Scottish Small Pipes. 🎻🙂😎
I saw her smile and was like, wait what? Why does it still play even when she is not blowing *dives down the blowpipe rabbit hole and learns everything* Wow that is so cool
Names are a perpetual source of confusion and should be treated with lenience especially when applied to recent developments. What we now call border pipes were well established both sides of the Scottish border in the 18th century. They gradually fell out of use and disappeared In 1930s. The revival led to several variants with different names. Roughly, those with Scottish style chanter are Scottish border/lowland pipes, those with a newer model chanter are simply called border pipes.
I’ve got border pipes and they are definitely Scottish. I don’t think border pipes existed at all in the English tradition, the ones with the closed pipe at the bottom are English though. I speak on impression, haven’t studied the subject.
It’s amazing how little air Mr York’s pipes seem to need… either that or he has enormous lungs. Anyway, very enjoyable both. Makes me yearn for spring and some verdancy. Not long now!
The Uilleann Pipes are Irish Bellows Blown Bagpipes w/ a Folksy Sound.
Fantastic!
Thanks! 😎
I was in a workshop with you at Holmfirth in December 2022 Aisling. Just got my first set of border pipes yesterday! Quite a departure from clarinet 😊
How exciting! Enjoy your pipes and maybe we’ll get to play together again some time - Blowout 2023? 😊
Hi, I'm an absolute beginner on my pipes, and I can't manage to keep the note going while I top up the bag via the blowpipe. Is this normal when you first start, and do you have any tips for arriving at a point where you can play a constant note? I really like your calm, reassuring manner of presentation, by the way!
Hi. This is perfectly normal when you start. You are re-training and strengthening muscles and this takes time. Exercise 1: inflate bag to 90 -95% full (approximately). Remove your mouth from the blowpipe, then squeeze steadily and keep the note going for as long as you can. Check which muscles are needed and try to relax the other ones, especially the gripping ones (not so easy to do!). When you are comfortable with this: Exercise 2: Repeat as for exercise 1, but this time blow steadily re-fill the bag after about 5-6 seconds. Stop at 90%. While doing this you will need to slightly reduce arm pressure so the pressure in the bag is steady. Eventually this will become an automatic action and you will not need to think about it, but you will need to be patient! I can be contacted via info@bagpipesociety.org.uk Good luck
Wow, takes me back!!
Amazing! Plus, you have a very enjoyable voice sir.
Hello, I am wanting a set just like these, can I ask where you go these from? They are just beautiful
Hi. The pipes are commonly known as Border Bagpipes and they were made by Jon Swayne: www.jonswayne.com The set used in the video is an upgraded version of the Student Pipes in G, made of apple wood, with a mopane chanter
Hi Dolly, your family in America would love to get in touch with you. We are no longer in Arizona…we live in Texas now. Linda
Hi Linda. It is highly unlikely that your message will reach Dolly from here. Please contact info@bagpipesociety.org.uk if you need help contacting her by other routes
This answered many questions I was having!! Thank you.
Thank you for your message Carole. We are pleased that you found the video useful. Happy piping!
Another great John Swayne number, beautifully arranged and played.
Très belle musique et interprétation
Bravo votre jeu est beau et il faut un sacré souffle
Polesworth may be small, but it is mighty
1634, the performance of 'The Late Lancashire Witches' in London, with its Lancashire Piper in Act 3 ("no Witchcraft can take hold of a Lancashire Bag-pipe, for itselfe is able to charme the Divell"). This play and the events leading up to it created a burst of interest in Lancashire and its local culture. The play is full of hunting, though of hares, for which the county was famous. Maybe a reasonable bet that the transcription of the piece derives from music performed in what was a well-resourced and very successful play. The scene in the play demanded something amazing and wild like this: here's a stage direction: "Daunce. Lawrence and Parnell reele in the daunce. At the end Mal vanishes & the piper." So glad to hear and see it performed!
Thank you for the background Roy, a most interesting addition and we will pass your comments on to Paul. Glad you enjoyed the video. Best wishes
What type of pipes are these? are they boarder pipes? I really enjoyed the you guys playing together. great tunes
Hi. These are border-style pipes in G, designed and made by Jon and Mike. They have a wider range of notes than the traditional border pipes. which are usually pitched in A or Bb
They sound wonderful.
astonishing
I’ve just found this little gem while I was chasing up your Chanter Autumn 2021 article. Love it; thank you very much. I join with Julian, Tom et al in hoping to play it together at Polesworth. One day.... Bill Gilkes
Lovely

Its taken me a whole year to discover this- its beautiful, Aisling. Maybe next year we can all play it together in the sun at Polesworth.......
Wonderful. Cheers from sunny Vienna, Scott
