    if you turn sharply on cold or old asphalt the asaphalt sticking on the tires or drums will come off also diesel works best for non stick tires not this water based bullcrap

      Water works fine and even better with a little soap in the tank. Putting fuel on a fresh mat is just a bad recipe for degradation of the mat, you spray diesel on your shovels and lutes to clean them don’t you? You’re doing the same thing with diesel on the contact patches. You can scrub with tires and rollers on cold asphalt but you’re just accelerating wear. I’m sure this stuff works for you and your crew but there are better ways.

  • @walsmachinist1
    @walsmachinist1 2 года назад

    Machine weight and linear load are not the right parameters to predict the performance of a roller, for instance a 80 cm roller of 1575 kg (rolling factor 0.21) is stronger than a 213 cm tandemroller of 17 tons (rolling factor 0.12), the only difference is the production capacity. Tender zone is mainly caused by tandemtrollers, wide drums tend to compact in a more horizontal direction. Also the Nijboer factor is not a right tool to predict the behaviour of a roller drum. for thinner lift three wheel static rollers are the best choice. The rolling factor of a tandemroller is about 0.15, a rolling factor of a three wheel static roller is about 0.60, so four times stronger pressure! A big difference is the direction of compaction, three wheel roller compact in a more vertical direction, tandemrollers are pushing the asphalt more horizontally. The problem is that tandemrollers tend to destroy the density they previously gained. A lot of vibration is much too strong, it is better to use softer vibration and run some more vibratory passes. Be careful with vibration, drum ringing is a sign that the vibration is too strong. Vibration is not the only way to compact, it is useful when the mat is hot, but after two or three vibrating passes it is better to continue with static compaction. Be sure there are enough rollers!

    isn't the PG rating what is your given desired environment rating of your asphalt binders? ie.. a PG 64-22 should have a desired satisfactory range of a max of 64 degrees centigrade to a minimum of -22 degrees centigrade.

    • @texasasphalt
      @texasasphalt 3 года назад

      Thank you for your question. Since the 64 in a PG64-22 is based on the 7-day maximum pavement temperature in C, and the -22 is the minimum pavement design temperature in C, a pavement falling in those ranges should perform satisfactorily. Note, these are pavement temperatures, not air temperatures. It should also be noted that TxDOT does consider the Traffic Loading, Loading Rate, Position in Pavement structure, and the use of RAP in the design layers to potentially bump up the PG grade a maximum of two levels to a PG76-22 for heavy traffic and slow-moving loads. ftp.txdot.gov/pub/txdot-info/cst/PGSelectionProcess.pdf

    What’s the difference between liquid asphalt & asphalt sealer?

    • @texasasphalt
      @texasasphalt 3 года назад

      Liquid Asphalt Binders are engineered asphalt products that are mixed with aggregate (rock, sand, and reclaimed asphalt pavement) in a asphalt plant to make asphalt mixes for roads, highways, parking lots, and driveways. Asphalt sealers are typically asphalt emulsions (sometimes containing additives) that are spread in a liquid form on top of a driveway or parking lot to fill in small cracks and restore the color of the surface. Hope this helps!

    Question: I've been a IB for several years and I am noticing a seeming trend in the weight of hmac making a small downward trend; i.e.... I've always been taught that #110 pounds /in/sq yd is an acceptable number by the industry. However I have noticed that now it appears that the weight is trending somewhat lighter, to #108 or even as as low #106, any idea what this can contributed to? I have thought that it may have something to do with aggregate gravities and pit qualities may contribute to it, but am I way off base? Thanks, KN

    • @jmw4570
      @jmw4570 3 года назад

      Thanks for your question. The 110# value has been around for many years and is a pretty good rule of thumb number. You are correct that spread rate is mostly influenced by the specific gravity of the rock, and as you know - aggregate geology/type affects specific gravity. You can even have fluctuating aggregate specific gravities in the same quarry. That maybe what you are seeing. Nature is anything but uniform. In reality, that 110# number ranges from less than 105 #/SY-In to closer to 120 #/SY-In depending on the type of aggregate used and the in place air voids. 110# is a good average but not exact. You can calculate it by using the Maximum Gravity (Gmm) of the mix design and converting it. Example: Gmm 2.521 X 43.5 (dimension conversion and 7.0 percent place air voids) = 109.6 rounds to 110 pounds per square yard per inch. Don't try to convert to three decimals - the real world isn't that close because even the Gmm varies a bit day to day. Long answer to a good question, so 110 is still a good number unless you get into light weight or heavy aggregates. Hopefully this helps. Jim Warren
