Hiiragi is great, but I also think you have to consider the team that he's playing around. Kiyora in the 2nd selection is actively keeping up with Karasu and Otoya in terms of contributions. I also think the narrative definitely pushes Kiyora > Hiiragi as Kiyora was actually chosen

All the red flags were there in that trailer. Overly detailed designs and little to no animations. The only cope back then was that a smaller group or separate studio made the trailer to get the main team time to work on the show. It’s clear as day the red flags were true. The idea is being saved for the game is also cope. What anime went from ass to start to great in the middle? It’s usually the opposite if you’re going to see a drastic change in quality. It’s sad and disappointing that the studio, who was never known to have much animation in their work, gave their animators even worse work conditions than season 1. It’s okay to admit this is unacceptable. We’re all fans of the series and will enjoy the plot and character interaction, but a sports anime with nonexistent animation is a huge blow. I’m holding out hope that a season 3 gets more time or another studio picks it up

AFAIK, this kind of minimalistic animation comic is called "motion comic". The thing about motion comic anime is, it's not really new. Ninja Slayer and Way of Househusband were also in the motion comic format, but they have far less criticisms because _the format worked on their favor._ Sure, Ninja Slayer would definitely be benefited a lot from a much better animation, but it's just an action comedy skit. And for the Way of Househusband's case, the author just asked for it to be like that. _Blue Lock, tho? It's an action sports anime! The last thing you want from an action-heavy anime is a bad animation!_ This is just a bad decision, really. Now, do I blame the animators? No, because they might have the potential to create something better. No, the problem really lies in the management and executives, because they're the ones responsible for the budgeting, external directives, etc.
