Fugue in F-sharp minor, BWV 883 from Well-Tempered Clavier Book 2
The centerpiece of Book 2 is a triple fugue in three voices, whose third subject is almost the same as the second subject of the Fugue in C-sharp minor from Book 1. If we accept the notion that this particular subject depicts the Holy Spirit, then perhaps here Bach is illustrating the Trinity - the dignified first subject as the Father, the descending second subject as the Son, the drifting third subject as the Holy Spirit - coexisting in perfect harmony. It is befitting to end the piece in bare octaves, for the three (voices) are in one.
The score is modified from "An 'open source' open score edition of Bach's Well-tempered Clavier" by Kyle Rother. hdl.handle.net/11427/13106

To Picardy or not to Picardy, that is the question. Although the Picardy third is the "default" version in authoritative editions like Henle and Bärenreiter, the footnote says that A♮ is found in other sources. Somehow the Picardy third just doesn't work for me, but I can't explain why. This is perhaps the only piece in the WTC where the final chord is in dispute. May the debate and variety of ...

From a technical view, the WTC deals with various aspects of polyphony, but this prelude is the only exception. Perhaps Bach was making a statement to his critics that he was equally capable in the fashionable homophonic writing. The poignance achieved with so few notes reminds me of the saying from _Daodejing_ [1] "profound music is sparse" [2]. [1] The Western world may be more familiar with ...

The theological subtext of this triple fugue[1] is undeniable. Using the cruciform motif as the subject, with a diminished fourth leap, is daring and unsettling, but it aptly symbolizes the pain of Crucifixion. As some have argued, the second theme of running eighth notes represents the Holy Spirit. I agree with this symbolism as it can be abundantly found in Bach's sacred music (e.g. "Cum Sanc...

The lyrical and melancholic Bach is never sentimental, perhaps because of the logical construction from simple building blocks. Here the 6-note motif evokes all kinds of emotions and takes us to the highest point of B♯5 right at the golden ratio of b.25. The piece concludes with an inconspicuous cruciform motif in the tenor, subtly paving the way for the ensuing fugue. The BACH motif appears at...

A manualiter chorale prelude of the Lutheran hymn from Clavier-Übung III. The technical challenge is to maintain a smooth scale while oftentimes playing a second part in the same hand. Fugue in D major, BWV 850 from Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1

It is my firm belief that one can attain a deeper understanding of Bach's music by examining his corpus, and this fugue is a great example. One year before his death, Bach completed the Mass in B minor, where the final chorus "Dona nobis pacem" is based on an augmentation of the subject of this fugue, but with a different leap interval. There the fugue starts off immediately with a stretto and ...

This is what I call the "ping-pong prelude," an imagery[1] created by the alternating down-up gesture in the left hand and the swiftness in the right hand. Regarding the tempo, I have never heard such an extreme range of choices: anywhere from Andante to Prestissimo. I don't know if Gould is the one who started it, but many pianists - established masters (Richter, Ólafsson) and young competitio...

A stretto fugue with inversion of an austere character. We saw how the Fugue in B-flat minor concluded with a succession of subject entries. Not only does it work here, but also the succession of the subject inversion immediately follows. This four-bar (bb.52-55) magical moment occurs right at the golden ratio. The counterpoint is further enriched by exploring various overlaps between the subje...

Similar to the Prelude in C minor, the didactic nature of the piece cannot be more obvious in the A section. It is a lesson on hand equality via invertible counterpoint. The B section begins almost right at the golden ratio. 此前奏曲在黃金比例前是通過轉換對位來練習雙手平等。寓教於藝,莫過於此。 *Prelude in C-sharp major, BWV 848 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)* Piano: Ruoshi Sun (2024) on CLP-785 Temperament: Werckmeister

    Hello, fellow violinist (not professional only by hobbie), I wanted to ask why in the eleventh bar the top note is an F, but in all the recordings of violin I found they play an E. Why was that difference, by the way I played in my violin watching that PDF and I also was confused why it was a different version in that part.

  • @stevechandler8098
    @stevechandler8098 6 дней назад

    Beautifully played, but why no embellishments? When I studied organ I was taught to always add a trill if there's a dotted rhythm before a cadence as in bar 23. You might consider it. You also missed the trill and mordant in bar 73. I get that this piece has a certain profundity and embellishments could disturb that emotional experience. I'm not suggesting you over embellish (Ton Koopman?), but those two could add to your performance. The first was expected in Baroque times and the second is notated in your score (and also in mine). As it is your performance is fine,... but just a bit disappointing.

    • @RuoshiSun
      @RuoshiSun 6 дней назад

      @@stevechandler8098 Thanks for your compliment and feedback! I don't know exactly why I dropped the ornament in b.73. I think when I first learned this piece 20 years ago it was already difficult enough without the ornament. A subconscious reason that I didn't pick it up later (now that you prompted me to think about it) is perhaps it might sound a bit out of place or intrusive on the piano, being the only ornament in the piece. However, I mentally picture myself playing this piece on an organ with muted stops where this ornament could blend in effortlessly. I will certainly try it out in the future. Good suggestion for b.23. A similar observation applies to the Fugue in F-sharp minor from Book 2. In some editions a trill is added to all the dotted eights of the second subject. In most recordings I've heard none of them are executed. In my own recording (just uploaded yesterday) I actually added a few and an unmarked long trill near the end. So I am aware of ornamentation and I sometimes add more than what is written (but other times I may choose to omit the written ornaments), especially when it comes to repeated sections as in my videos on the French Suites. It's just for this particular fugue that I never thought about it. Thanks again!

    The symbolism in this piece is staggering, it really changes your perception of art the first time you read into it. What can we compare in our modern world? It's like a sacred jewel of a quality and craftsmanship that we have no reference for. All we can do is stare in awe and maybe tell some people about it, lots are unaware.

      You asked a deep question. Indeed, what do we have in our modern world? Money worship, consumerism, rise of the AI overlords... In all seriousness, we probably still have the Platonic existence of truth, but even then not everybody agrees with such a notion. For timeless music such as this, I think one should still at least have a sense of reverence, even if one no longer believes in the symbolism.

      Вы ошибаетесь, возможно, желая получить фортепианную интерпретацию, нравящуюся именно Вам. Во времена Баха за украшениями стояла утилитарная функция продления звучания (на клавесине звук затухает быстрее, чем на фортепиано), а не "работы" с гармонией.

      Yes, I imagine I would play it a bit slower in a concert hall. My piano is very dry and it is difficult to sustain the lines. (Reverb is added afterwards.)
