Any raccomendation ?
Nanlight and Amaran make tube lights. I think Godox also make them
I’d add in a spotlight mount to bounce light wherever you want it. Very helpful in tight spaces where you don’t have room for stands where you need them.
Good shout! The spotlight mount is a really nice looking piece of equipment. I think for me personally it’d be a job dependent attachment, so it’d probably be something that I’d rent vs buy.
Awesome work Ben! I totally agree this is a great package for corporate videography, and I use many of these fixtures in my work. My favourite tips were getting a smaller softbox for those tight locations (happens often) and using a diffuser over the interview talent. Usually I'm more concerned with blocking overhead light, but diffusing it is a great way to get a free hair-light.
Thanks dude! I really wish I that I had one of the largest flexible LED lights in my kit. They’re so versatile. I find myself diffusing the overhead light rather than completely blocking it out. I find that it feels more natural in the interviews and PTCs that I film. I’ll have to give completely blocking out the overheads a crack on a future project to see how it looks.
@@bseng Agreed, those flexible LED's are incredible for how many ways you can use them compared to a traditional COB. However the Aputure F22's have a noisy ballast which can sometimes be a problem. I like the idea of diffusing overhead light and I think both have their place. As you mentioned keeping the actual overheads looks more natural than light being cut from the talent's hair. Depends on your desired look and priorities.
A solid lighting kit package, I reckon as backup it’s always good to include a black panel for blocking out lights that can’t be switched off (assuming the diffusion panel isn’t enough on its own). I’ve been using an Amaran 200x S recently to light for my wife’s content and podcast setups, combined with the Light Dome Mini and the honeycomb filter (for softer close ups) - it’s been absolutely beautiful and quite a minimal setup! For wider shots I punch it at 100% through a 1/2 diffusion panel, remove the honeycomb and it softens it beautifully.
Thanks dude! Totally agree with the black solid for completely blocking any over head lights. Though not perfect, if I didn’t have a solid on me I think I’d use the shiny cover with black side and pop that over top of the talent. The Amaran lights look really solid, especially if you don’t require them to be battery powered.
Hi Ben, this is exactly what I'm looking for! Been struggling with efficiency and certainty copying media during and after shoots. I heard you mention that do you copy only one card at a time. Is there a reason not to copy 2 or more cards at a time with dual card readers?
Hey Richard, I'm glad that you found the video helpful. I don't think there's an issue copying two cards at a time. As long as you have a good dual card reader that gives you good transfer speeds without throttling when transferring two cards at the same time then you should be all good.
@ good to know! I'm guessing ProGrade?
Yeah I think that the ProGrade dual card reader is a good choice. I haven't had much experience with it myself, but I have a couple of their cards and they're solid. Their card reader has been on my list of things to get though.
Does the interviewer see the interviewee though?
If you're running just a stripped down setup, then the Interviewer can't really see the Interviewee. Depending on the setup, the Interviewer may see an obscured view of the Interviewee through the tablet front facing camera. For a better view of the Interviewee, you'll have to run the feed from the camera into a HDMI capture card on a secondary computer, which would then have to dial into the call.
Done that before with an ipad on the tp and macbook as a diy interrotron. It works wonders.
For sure, it's way more convenient than having to setup two cameras and two teleprompters. I've used the Eye Direct system before and it's a pretty neat solution, but it's pretty big and requires a larger tripod to mount everything on.
Awesome tip! 👏
Thanks dude!
This is awesome Ben! I've always been intrigued by the Interrotron, but never had much use for it when I'm mainly filming interviews with eye lines off camera or straight down the lens with a script on the prompter. However, I could see this coming in handy for certain projects or clients, and great to know it can be done with a standard prompter :)
Thanks dude! Yeah I haven't used this setup for a paid job, but wanted to tinker to see if it was possible as I've had a few occasions in the past where the eyeline for interviewee was to the lens. This solution could be a little clunky depending on the setup that you have, but I think the clunkiness is worth getting a good eye line with talent for this type of interview. It's also a much smaller footprint than setting up an Interrotron.
@@bseng Totally. I think it's also great for the reason that you're using pre-exisiting gear to do another job. The Interrotron looks interesting but it's a highly specialised tool that will only come out on some jobs. In the meantime you'd need to buy it, store it and hope that it gets used. Despite your setup being a bit clunkier- it works without buying more stuff!
I got this same issue and i have tried to remapping and changing dates it’s not working The hot pixel is still there Please help me and let what can i do
Is the hot pixel appearing even at low ISOs on your camera?
Such a great demo Ben! Honestly lighting on set can be so time consuming that there isn’t much room to experiment or get things wrong on the day. Doing this during the pre-production phase can save heaps of time. Also where are these corporate locations where I can do an 8’ x 8’ book light 😂
Thanks dude! For sure, especially if you're working solo. I've been doing a lot of pre-vis on the more involved productions that I'm on. It's definitely fun to be able to experiment with different lighting techniques with a small amount of effort and no pack down. Haha, a director of photography can dream. I can think of maybe one of two corporate offices that I've filmed at that could fit an 8x8 book light, but it's definitely few and far between.
Well i lietarly just understand why ALL of my family brings all that stuff always
Definitely some handy things to have in your bag.
This is one of those things I've been meaning to purchase for ages but never gotten around to. I need to fix that asap. Great video, Ben!
Thanks Chris! For sure they’re definitely handy to have in your kit.
Love this Ben 🙏 Honestly never thought of oil absorbing sheets, but having just finished a project where we had to remove the shine of our talent's face in the grade- this would've been so much easier!
Thanks dude! I only discovered that the oil absorbing sheets (blotting paper) was a thing a few years ago. They’re not super expensive and don’t take up much room in the camera bag either.
@@bseng So good! The only thing I'd be concerned about is talent with makeup already on. Have you come across any issues with that?
@@MattQuattro It's something that I haven't really come across yet. I think if the talent were to just dab the areas gently with the sheets (rather than wipe) any make up they that they may be wearing shouldn't be effected.
@@bseng Makes perfect sense, thanks Ben. Also loving the change to 4:3 aspect too!
No sweat! Thanks, it was a cheeky way to hide the big ole reflection of my key light in the window behind me once it started to get dark out. I really have to stop filming video's right before it starts to get dark out haha
Where does someone buy the ‘slim filter’ I hear so many talk about?
The slim filter ‘tis but a myth
You knew I was gonna like this one! 😁
Haha, now in bite sized form
Great tips. Always keep a few blankets in my truck for these kind of things...I didn't know about the burrito roll though! Much better than just folding!
Thanks Scott! The burrito roll was a bit of a game changer when I discovered it. A really nice way to store moving blankets in the van.
Such a great video Ben! Sometimes the most handy tools on set aren't the expensive lenses or big lights but these kind of solutions. Also love the use of an ultra clamp for a t-bar too!
Thanks dude! Totally, and since they aren’t all that expensive, if they get dirty or damaged it’s not a big deal. It was actually my first time using a super clamp for a t-bar haha. I’ve generally used the MSE Mini Matthelini’s to rig them up, but the super clamp worked great. I’ve got to get a few more of them for my grip kit I think.
@@bseng So good! A Matthelini is also good but those super clamps (not ultra haha) are pretty versatile for other things too.
For sure, I defs need to add more to my kit. I totally forgot I had one until I filmed this video haha
Awesome tips Ben, I love the sound cushioning and also love a comfortable (and tasty!) burrito.
Thanks dude! Comfortable burritos are the best type of burritos. Tasty burritos are great fuel to get your through a big day of filming too.
What do dolphins and moving blankets have in common? They are very good at echo locations!
Hahaha, who would have think it.
Great video Ben and the scene is very nicely lit 👌👌
Thanks dude! I appreciate the kind words
Such a great breakdown Ben! So much good stuff here but especially love the Infinibars. It actually makes such a good practical in shot because it doesn't have the black caps like the Pavotubes. Also think the grade was perfect for this style too, simple but elegant. Beautiful work and definitely keen for more of these 🙌
Thanks for the kind words Matt! The Infinibar worked a real treat here, I tested the Pavotubes as they were lighter and smaller profile and as you mentioned the end caps stood out like a sore thumb. There are a couple of things that I would have loved to tweak with the lighting, but really pleased with what we were able to achieve in such a simple setup.
@@bseng Honestly when I saw the reference you chose, it looks like you nailed it!
Thanks dude!
What a great breakdown!
Thanks Mary! I'm going to try and get some more of these videos out in the future, they're a lot of fun to put together.
Breakin' down!
*record scratch*
Let’s do this again Ben!
I’m keen! Let’s do it 👍
Great tip Ben!
Thanks Nick! Glad it was helpful
Looks great Ben, honestly better than your reference image haha! great work 🤙
Thanks so much for the kind words dude!
Does Pixel remapping makes the pixel work again or it just mimics nearby pixels ?
From my understanding Pixel remapping basically mimics the nearby pixels to remove the hot pixel from the footage or photo. I think with most sensors there’s always a few hot pixels which get mapped out. Since sensors have so many pixels now, it’s hard to have a hot pixel free sensor.
I had a stuck pixel in my 6700 which i bought like 3 weeks ago, After pixel mapping, the stuck pixel is gone, Should I send this camera to service centre or will it be fine for the rest of its life?
If the hot pixel isn’t appearing in your footage after a pixel remap you shouldn’t need to send it into a service centre. You’ll just need to pixel map every now and again to remove new hot pixels as they appear.
This is brilliant, thanks Ben!
Thanks for checking the video out, glad that it was helpful.
Cool! Subbed. What do you do?
Thanks for the sub! I'm a director of photography, just sharing things that I've discovered or learnt over the last 10+ years working professionally.
Sensible as always Benny!
Always gotta be safe 👍
Important video! Thinking about backups and hard drives are things that can keep me up at night for sure, haha,.
Definitely, especially if your hard drives are holding some once in a life time stuff
This should be required watching for anyone working in video production, thanks for putting this together Ben 🙏 Also had no idea about OffShoot Connect but that might actually convince me to switch from Carbon Copy Cloner!
It was a fun video to put together. It was interesting to see how much my process has changed over the years. Hedge Connect is pretty neat, but I don’t use it as much. It’s good to know the feature is there. The mobile browser I use doesn’t have notification currently so didn’t get the chance to check the notifications for complete transfers.
@@bseng Totally and as you mentioned, everyone has their own preferred way. I've known too many people who've been stung by having no backups especially early on in their career. So while media management can be a dry topic it's very important!
I didn’t know about offshoot will check it out!
It’s a really solid app, I’ve been using it for a few years now and it’s been great.
I am smarter than before, thanks for this videoooooooo!
Glad that the video was helpful!
@@bseng it surely was!
Gotta reduce the friction on the pan and tilt movements! Keep it smooth and steady or fast and loose baby!
Loosey goosey for them hand held style shots
It’s embarrassing, but I still have to get around to investing in a really good tripod and video head… 🙈 I’ve got a couple of really small and light tripods for travel, but nothing good and stable. Need to fix that, it’s just a boring thing to spend money on, haha. Like buying hard drives. But necessary!
Small and light tripods definitely serve a purpose (I'm needing to get a lighter tripod for travel and hiking/camping trips). I totally agree that, it's not the most exciting thing to spend a bunch of money on, but it's definitely well worth it. I think I've had my Sachtler FSB6 tripod for close to 10 years now and it hasn't skipped a beat.
@@bseng That is awesome, money well spent for sure!
Great tips Ben!
Thanks Dave!
I have driven a long distance to be backup photographer for a wedding, and forgot my camera battery 😅 lucky I could borrow one from the other photographer. Make sure you carry spares! And alternate charging them too so one is always charged
Totally agree with bringing spares, especially when travelling long distances. I’ve been in the situation where I’ve forgotten a power cable for a monitor, which nearly rendered the monitor useless. Fortunately another cable that I had worked. Now I create a pre-shoot gear checklist using a Notion template I built to make sure that I don’t leave any critical equipment behind.
Nice one Ben. I am including this for my prep shoot check list from now on!
Thanks Nick, glad the video was helpful
Been meaning to get one of these for ages! So much better than trying to awkwardly balance bags on a bathroom scale haha
I used to do the old weigh myself, then weigh myself holding my bag/case dance. Glad that I don't have to do that anymore.
@@bseng Even though it's not as convenient as the travel scale, that's a solution I've never thought of! Haha
@@MattQuattro haha, it does require a few extra steps but it works pretty well.
That was some spicy highlight!
Th spiciest of highlights
Lovely results and video. Especially apprecitive of how concise this was. Subbed!
Thanks for the kind words! I’ll have more content like this coming in the new year.
Great review Ben! I have loved using Dehancer and agree that the vignette tool could definitely be improved. I usually zero my exposure and feather out which allows me to make adjustments without needing to click on the image, and then just put them back after. Also your test footage looks great too 👏
Thanks for the very kind words! Yeah it would be great to see an update implementation of the vignette tool, but can understand if there’s some limitations with OpenFX plugins.
Great review by de-handsomest ‘tuber I know!
Aww shucks, thanks dude. I can’t wait for your next video to drop.
Such a detailed and comprehensive review!
Looks like a bit of a trend with my last couple of videos haha. Was a fun one to put together.
Dude this is incredible
Thanks for the kind words! It's a great plugin that I've been able to get some really good looking results from.
Wow! Thank you for the review🥰
Thanks for creating a great and easy to use plugin!
Love this! I’ve been using Digital DoF for ages but this app looks so much better with more features.
Yeah the F8 Lens Tool kit is a great app, the frame match comes in handy. I really love being able to save camera and lens combinations to Favourites as well.
@@bseng I downloaded it after watching this and I'm super happy with it. The ability to add a lens kit is so useful!
Awesome! Yeah it’s so handy.
