This episode wasn't totally well thought out regarding Holodeck characters and how they could "highjack" a Starship. But I find Daniel Davis' performance tremendous. Pair him with fellow Shakespearean actor Stewart and it's magic, even though it's so short.

At the end of the day, Moriarty and Data are just artificial atomatons given anthropomorphic characteristics. You want to see them grow and become more, but that speaks more to the desire for companionship and fellowship of humanity than to the nature of machines.

Great script. Great episode. Great "villian," (although he turned to not be so bad). Great actor. Problem-turned out in Voyager, any holodeck program ended up being sentient. They wrote themselves into a major contradiction. TNG well-established that except for Moriarty, and another episode from season 1-holograms were not sentient. Voyager changed that without any coherent explanation. Vick from DS9-dont' know if he was sentient or not, and they never established if he was.

Making the understanding clear first of that this is a work of fiction but - if a computer as powerful as the Enterprise computer can effectively make a kind of 'personification' of itself that is sentient, aware, and clearly can describe itself as being in a kind of emotional and existential pain - that's somewhat disturbing. You could almost argue in one sense that the Enterprise computer is offering up a cry for emotional help in creating an image of itself that is expressing discomfort at its existence.

"I may be an old woman by then..." Hate to be the one to tell you, Dr. Pulaski, but you're no spring chicken.

this episode and this character are a class of acting Scifi has not seen in a long time.

The existence of The Doctor's mobile holo-emitter in Voyager suggests that converting holodeck matter into normal matter, is a problem that won't be solved anytime in the near future.

What couldn't they give Moriarty one of those holoemitters that the Doctor had on Voyager?

This bears asking the question, now that Voyager has returned with a portable holo-emitter, what becomes of Moriarty?

Personally, I think id attempted to find a way to place Moriarty into a android. It might take a long while but Moriarty actually has the benefit of time. Or considering what happens in voyager (From the comments I read) the mobile emitters needed to just bring him out of there would come into existence. Though if they could just stick Moriarty and the Countess into a Cube, allowing them to live a mini holodeck. It seems like they could of just taken that cube's ability to render their beings, and than placed it into a android, one for each of them. Replacing the stimuli of their simulated bodies with the real stimuli of the android ones. Almost like turning the android into a mobile emitter, just that it displays the real world around it, rather than the holodeck. I guess the logical reason this couldn't work, is because of processing power or something, but the real answer is that its more interesting if Moriarty gets stuck in the mini holodeck unknown to him.

I never knew until now that this actor, Daniel Davis, voiced the Darth Plagueis audiobook. He has such a liquid voice.

It's extremely clear, how amazing this actor is. He knew what he was doing, and delivered his lines with such a detailed style. I'm impressed by Mr. Davis.

What's interesting is that Moriarty gained sentience in the same way that voyagers Doctor did. It also raises a much deeper philosophical question; how/when/what would it require for software to become sentient? Data's body, like a humans is merely hardware whereas our minds are software....not the brain part, but the conscience part. Moriarty was a projected hologram but his consciousness was self-aware software. If self awareness is the threshold for "sentience", at some point we will write (intentionally or by accident) software that is self-aware. It's only a matter of time, but the real question is.....what then?

Am I the only one, who to see connection from Roy Batty (Blade Runner) to him.

I love how they figured out a way to put Moriarit program into a container with a lifetime of experiences also programmed in for him.

These creatures use human disguise, they know we humans are infinitely more powerful than we have been told....they have to provide truth at least some of it.

& instead of just giving him the playground to freely explore their world like GTA in hollodeck so he literally could explore all of their known world right down to it's finest detail, they just dump him in a memory stick. Even though that is what they end up doing in the end, except it's as a sad trick they play on him instead of just doing it in the first place. But that way sounds far less fun as you'd only get the 1 episode out of such a fascinating concept. Although, there is also still many episodes that could've been made for both but never were saddly, whta a fascinating 3'rd episode following up on his experiences in the insane discoveries that they would be too someone of his mind of that time. Shame they never did that follow up, I would sorely love to see that, & in none of this pathetic moron style they seem to be making them in lately, but really, really exploring the implications for a mind going through what they might

Maybe this had been said by Trekkies for years and years (and probably disputed on various grounds too) but around this period of the Star Trek universe timeline didn't they start using hologrammatic doctors and such the 'EMH' in Voyager for example - surely Moriarty could have existed as form of EMH at some point later in the Star Trek universe....

Moriarty and Dr Polaski developed a nice friendship.

I don't know why but I love this scene more than anything. It's like watching a more refined version of Roy Batty. I really feel for him and his desire for something everyone else takes for granted. I hope they bring him back and hes not a villain but a different exploration of "measure of a man".

They should try to bring doctor Pulaski back along with Moriarty. Somehow that would be quite the thing to see also.

A missed opportunity for an amazing movie or at least 3 part episode where Moriarty is able to leave the holodeck

He was one of my favorite characters and I'm astonished he's returning. Hopefully they don't butcher his character and portray him as a villain because he never was one...
