Do you know if mechanical flat tappet camshats have the same amount of taper ground into the camshaft as hydrauclic camshafts? Do the solid lifters have the same amount of radius on the face as a hydrauclic lifter? This is what I read from Larry Shephard who was a Chrysler engineer who worked for the Mopar Performance Parts division and wrote 5 books on Mopar engine building. Is this true for the Mopar purple camshafts only or are all brands machined like he states?
Thanks Robert, thanks for the question and the information. I believe the Lobe taper and lifter radius are the same for flat tappet and hydraulic. But the grind is different for solid camshafts do to the fact that Solid cam have valve lash. So the profile is different. Unfortunately lifter manufacturers have changed the facing or grinding process. Some are not the true radius, more like an angle. Have a great day.👍👍
@@edsmachine93 I read the engine building books that were written by Larry Shepard who was a Chrysler engineer that worked for the Mopar Performance Parts division. He states that the solid lifter cam has very little taper and the lifter has very little radius and the hydraulic cam lobe has much more taper and the lifter has much more radius on the face. Maybe only the Mopar purple camshafts were ground this way.
Thanks for the info Robert. I know that lobe taper has varied by manufacturers. I know for example the 440 6 pack had aow taper design and infact was a hydraulic camshaft. Lifter grind specs use to be unique to manufacturers. The radius was specific to the manufacturers specs. I know this because of the machines had different settings for grinding the radius. This went way back 30's 40' 50's and so on till current day. I liked the way Johnson ground the tappets, more like a circular patern forming a perfect radius and matched the taper perfectly. The old timers in the Industry were pretty smart. Have a good day.
@@edsmachine93 I only found one article out of hundreds that stated that the radius on the face of the lifter was determined by the shape of the cam lobe. All of the other articles stated that all hydraulic and solid lifters had the same lobe tapers and the lifters had the same radiuses. I searched all over Google after reading the Mopar engine book. Most of the knowledge from the past is gone from the internet.
Helicoils are great little inventions, but I never like having to do them. That hole being 90° is the key to success for sure. Thank you Ed
Thanks Bill, I appreciate you watching and commenting. They're several ways to fix a thread problem like this. I would have like to get out all of the foreign material and plugged and drilled and tapped or put in a Jergens or Keensert insert. Like I said multiple ways. But they are thick wall and I did not want to break through. Have a great weekend. 👍🇺🇸👍
Ed, I watch you and learn how to things the right way. Thank you!!

Great video Daniel! I wouldn't put an ounce of stock in anything that jackass says. He's been a thorn in the automotive community's backside since the inception of his channel!

Thanks Ben, I really appreciate your feedback. Have a great weekend. 👍🇺🇸👍
Ed, I love your work. I want to ask you a question about the machine. I just bought a comec ac 170 And I still don't understand the rev parameters and the speed at which the cylinder descends. Can you give me some advice? Thank you so much
Thanks Luis, Congratulations on you purchase of the Comec 170. On 4.00 bore I start about 550 rpm down to 500 rpm, and feed about 5 3/4 down to 5 on the dial. Smaller bores you can speed rpm up. Make you a little cheat sheet and write down what works for you on your machine. Sometimes I use the Berco bits and surface finish is better on some applications. If you are having problems with finish leave and extra .001 to .002 to hone always focusing on the final surface finish. Your machine maybe different as my machine is an ACF200. Thank you for being on board. Have a great weekend. 👍
Where are you located Luis? Have a great day.👍
Thank you very much for the time you dedicate to me. I am from Guatemala And I went from the classic portable rhymer to this new one. I am concerned about the durability of the burins, I use tungsten. Thank you very much Ed you are amazing
Great video Ed, no detail gets overlooked in your shop. I have heard that on Mopars the factory pickup was intended to touch the bottom of the pan. Any truth to that?
Thanks Andy, I really appreciate you watching and commenting. And "No" the Mopar pickup should never touch the pan on the bottom!. No pickup should unless it has risers or supports. You can Tig or Mig a 1/4 nut on the rim of the pickup to insure it will not suck the tube down to the bottom of the pan. The suction will pull the pickup down, or can. Have a great day.👍🇺🇸👍
Heads look awesome 👏 😎
Thank you Luis, I really appreciate it Brother. Have a great weekend. 👍🇺🇸👍
That is a corvette only intake, it’s amazing the ears aren’t broken of at the top of the intake ports, everything else was cast iron, love your channel , I’m subbed! Thank you!

@@edsmachine93 I’ve been around for a minute Ed, only seen one out in the wild at a swap meet 35 years ago, not a great intake but the 390 / 427 was a great maintenance free engine, strong ,lived forever, thank you again my friend for saving a piece of our automotive history!
@@hilleryclifford1350 You're welcome and thank you, Ed.👍🇺🇸👍
👍🏼🏁👍🏼, Hi Ed. Happy Friday and weekend to you 👋🏼.
Hi JD, thank you. Have a great weekend too!👍🇺🇸👍
Great tip! Do you know what brand oil pan going on that 427?
Hi Duncun, was putting a Jegs pan on. But it did not fit, would not clear the factory windage tray and studs. So I cleaned up the the Factory baffled pan. It fit perfectly, and will be good for it's intended use in the Corvette. Have a good weekend. 👍 🇺🇸👍
Gotta keep that pump happy
Thank you Nathan, I appreciate it. 👍🇺🇸👍
Another simple, but often overlooked detail from Ed. Too close and cavitation can be an issue, to wide and you get burnt bearings. Nice tool also. Any thoughts to verify a complete seal around the press fit on the tube?
Thank you US191, I appreciate you watching and commenting. 👍 This pick up tube had alot of press fit. Certainly is tight. The factory does this on many brands. If you ever remove a factory pickup and install in a new pump you must weld it. I purchased a aftermarket screen and the tube was .010 approximately to small, no press. To use that requires full welding or brazing. I used the Melling in this case. Have a great weekend. 👍🇺🇸👍
Good video . Great explanation . You’re a good teacher

Ford folks are fine, it's the Bowties 🤮 😂 Most tips are universal or modified a bit they can still help no matter the platform. I've seen clay on piston to valve but never thought to use it for pickup clearance.
Thanks Joshua, I really appreciate you watching and commenting. And you are correct, alot of this information is universal and applicable for many applications. Have a good evening. 👍🇺🇸👍
Definitely a good tip,, really good idea on making the pick up installation tool ,,,good stuff Ed 👍 👍

It's so weird watching a video of someone else working and I pucker up when the power tapping starts.😅 I've broken sooooo many taps with a hand drill and tap. I can't bring myself to power tap anything anymore. Good fix. Better than new.
Thank you Joshu, I really appreciate you watching and commenting. The key is having the part clamped down and not moving, really helps. Have a great day Brother. 👍🇺🇸👍

Awesome repair as always, done by an expert! I wonder why they left that piece of bolt broken inside! Hopefully it doesn’t interfere with the bolt going in, it shouldn’t if you use a short bolt 👍
Thanks Luis, I really appreciate you watching and commenting. Not sure why someone did that. All started with a bad bolt and or threads and a bad repair. Have a good evening. 👍🇺🇸👍
