What even one of the filmmakers interviewed here got wrong was the fact that Snowy HAD the ability to communicate in human language - in the books. :) I think one of the most brilliant aspects of the books was the fact that the reader seemed to be the only one who understood what Snowy was saying, while all the characters ignored his often crucial comments. I think this was a clever way to emulate the way we don't understand what our dog is trying to tell us, even though the dog clearly has much to say. :) Read all completed 23 novels as a child in the early eighties, I still have them.

Actually no he didn’t. They were all in thought bubbles and Tintin never responded to anything Snowy said

@@bennu547 That is what I was trying to say, no one ever responded to anything Snowy said, because they couldn't understand him, although the reader could. But what you got wrong was that almost all what Snowy said was INDEED in speech bubbles (identical to bubbles used when humans talked in the books, as opposed to thought bubbles, which usually have small circles between the bubble and the thinker), although sometimes he thought some things aswell (for example in the end of Flight 714). It is just my interpretation that Snowy is barking or communicating in dog language, but he has much more to say than the characters in the book can understand. And he was always able to understand perfectly what people around him said. But my original comment was quite lighthearted anyway :)

So why did they call him Snowy? Maybe something like Milo would be better..

Advection I know I’m really late, but in the Comic Tintin in Tibet a character describes him “as white as powdered snow”. I also think because Fox Terriers aren’t normally white that made it stand out which would have contributed. Anywho hope that helps.

This comment is quite late, but apparently the name was chosen for English translations cause of his coat colour, and it’s a five-letter word that fits in the speech balloons. Well, I hope this helped answer your question! 🐾
