How I Break Down a T Shirt for Quilting
Просмотров 537Месяц назад
I had a request from a commenter on a previous video about breaking down a T shirt for quilting. So,here’s how I do it. I get the pieces to lie flat to take up less space. Now it can be stored neatly - hopefully not for too long - to use in a T-shirt quilt. Thanks for watching!

Not sure if your sewing machine came with a walking foot “But” The walking foot will help with keeping your squares together when you’re sewing them together Also there’s an iron on stabilizer you can put on the back of your t-shirt to keep it from stretching while you’re sewing them together You could put some Fray-check on your knots to keep them from coming undone I hope I’m being helpful You’ve put a lot of work into your quilt I love the colors you used And I never thought of reusing the stuffing out of an old pillow GENIUS Thank for sharing
I love seeing all the beautiful projects and tasty produce!! Thank you for sharing this- 💜💜💜
I had to turn the volume way down again.
Very inspired to make one ! Tq for not making it "in a day" like some quilter youtubers do. We all know a project like this takes many many backbreaking hours! This piece is beautiful !!!!
Could you mark your quilt square with an air marker to put lines to sew on . And it just presses a line in the material it will disappear . I find using one very helpful good luck with your project x
The way you use tshirt fabric and your patient hand quilting is so textural and beautiful. I’m making one this winter 💙💙💙
Thank-you so much for the compliments! I am so happy to hear that you have plans to make one too! Enjoy!
Oh Dara!!!! I can absolutely tell how soft and cozy ☁ that quilt is all the way from here in St. Louis! All the love that went into making it shines through❤. And yep, you have inspired me to go for it. The planning begins.... A few questions: Is there a specific reason that you chose to use your shears instead of rotary cutting your pieces? (Translation: rookie sewist lacks knowledge about working with different types of fabric). Also, what type of thread did you use? (Polyester or blend or cotton? and what was the weight? Or just all-purpose thread?). Clarification: the backing you used is a flannel sheet or knit fabric? Were all the fabrics cotton or were some blends? Oh! I wish you lived next door! 🏠 Those are my questions... for now. I'm so excited! All the best! ~Kelly 😊
Hi Kelly! okay here goes: I use scissors because I found that the rotary cutter was stretching the T-shirt fabric as I cut it, and also the Tshirt fabric curls and under a cutting ruler that was very frustrating. I used 100% polyester thread - Gutterman brand. Its just all purpose thread - you can see some in my yarn sale video - I show it as part of my haul. The backing is a flannel sheet. 100% cotton and not a stretch knit. Although flannel does have a bit of stretch to it. The Tshirts were a combination of all cotton and some cotton blends - they behave the same way when sewing. Feel free to ask more questions and have a GREAT time with your quilt - YOU GOT THIS!
I have seen other quilters use a dab of fray check on the yarn knots.
That's a good idea - thanks!
I just have to say how i hate when quilters brag about a quilt in a day. Why not take your time and really enjoy the process. And i thot i was the only one who saves pillow stuffing. Lol!
A lot of us save it, I think.
Really pretty.
So true - and I was really pushing myself to get this quilt done so I have no idea how someone gets one done in a day or a weekend.
No matter how hard i try, i get the colors in the wrong order. It looks so soft! You are a very encouraging teacher. Thanks!
Thank-you! I appreciate your comment and the sharing!
I always plan for way more than I accomplish, so these tips are very helpful! Thank you.
Glad to know its not just me :). Thanks for your comment!
Wonderful tips! Thanks for generously sharing. I am a Christmas enthusiast but rather lacking in planning.
They say it comes every year but it often seems to creep up on me too :) Thanks for your cute comment!
All good advice and ideas for planning and enjoying the holidays….😊
Thank-you! They seem to come up so fast :)
I saw a trick for hemming slippery fabrics where you sew a straight stitch a tad shorter all along the hem and then press the hem up along the sewn line. I have tried it with success. I love your persistence.. looks great on you!
Ahhh! you are so right - I forgot all about that trick - Thanks for your comment and now I can use it on my next hem :)
Hi Dara, I have only gifted 1 quilt outside of my family. The recipient was a good friend who was very happy to receive it. It still makes me nervous to gift a quilt. Desley🇦🇺
Hi! Good for you! I haven't gifted any except to my kids - and 1 baby quilt to my niece. It is nervous making, but good for you and I'm so happy that your recipient appreciated your gift :)
You look great!
Thank-you!
Big job. The music is still overpowering.
Thanks for letting me know - still working on the music.
looks nice and I like the color
Thank-you!
I love hand sewing I find it relaxing, quiet and I can be with my husband cozy in the living room. Hmm this part is hard to put into words, but I feel it to be historical kind of time travel so to speak. I do have a treadle that I want to get using this winter for larger projects. I believe I'll be more in touch with my sewing then with an electric machine.
I agree it is cozy and for sure a heritage skill. Have fun with your treadle machine!
I’m always impressed by the work and creativity that went into a handmade gift. Your last tip is the best- let go. 💜
Thanks - yes, it can be hard but it makes the making and the gifting more enjoyable in the long run :)
Beautiful items ALL. And many good thoughts on gifting handmade items. Thank you!
Thank you!
Just recently I made my first quilt, gave it away, I REGRETTED IT 😢, NOT EVER AGAIN.
So well done on your first quilt! I hope you make another one for yourself and keep going!
Calling it “garbage” gives it a negative connotation. Recycling and up cycling is a good thing and shouldn’t be referred to as garbage. I’ve been using thrift store fabric and 2nd hand clothes to make things for years and never once thought of it as “garbage”. I think you’re the first person to call it that honestly.
true :). I agree it's not garbage - just a play on words for me!
When i make something for my family i always tell them if they dont like it, then someone at goodwill will love it. My daughter will often call and ask if sge can turn the item into something else. Of course, i say. I am so proud that she can do that!
Well Done! I agree :)
Hello Dara! Ohhhh yes, gifting what you love to gift such as a handmade item- wellll for me it’s awesome! I agree that sometimes it isn’t appreciated, they don’t feel or l understand the feeling that it gives the crafter. I’ll never forget years ago when I married mom and were talking- I mentioned I rcvd such beautiful gifts; handmade, crystal, art. Such a vast asst. I said well I don’t want to use it, it might get broken or worn out. She said “they gave it to you to use, enjoy it, wear it out, if something should get broken you enjoyed using it” So I took her advice of almost 37 years using it, showing off how worn and loved it has been. If I recall I think one or two of a small pc has broken. Ohh how we miss her🕊️ I agree with all 7 of your ideas, even though sometimes that’s a hard pill to swallow.😝. ❤️😀
So true! I'm sure the people are very happy that you used their gifts throughout your life! Thanks for your comment and for sharing your story.
Cleaver!
Thanks very much! Its been a few months and the mend and cuffs are still going strong!
Have a ball quilting!!!
Thank you!
I totally agree with quilting your way!! I do the same. It feels so good to use what you already have🎉
Thank-you! I agree - :)
7:12 I love this. I actually have some old jeans I have been saving for this purpose. When you are choosing material to upcycle, do you stick to 100% cotton or use cotton/polyester blends?
Thanks for your comments and your compliments! I have some cotton/poly in my T-shirt quilt, my flannel quilt. The quilt I made from my hub's shirts - those shirts were all cotton. I think its really up to the maker and you have as much freedom as you want as long as you are comfortable with taking a chance. Good luck with your denim - I've only used it for boot mats (video coming) not a whole quilt - its good stuff :)
I have made a few very expensive quilts. They sit on a quilt rack. My hubby and i always choose scrappy quilts or recycled fabric quilts to snuggle in. I think the quilters on utube pressure us to buy their wares. Or they present stunning quilts that make my mind blow up trying to follow their lead. So enjoyed the message from this video. Gonna do more recycling!
I am certainly all admiration for expensive quilts with brand new fabric and the skill that goes into some of these stunning quilt tops. I'm just more comfortable with my humble stuff ;). thanks for sharing your experience and happy quilting.
In my community quilting with previously used fabrics was the ONLY way we quilted! I'm glad more are getting back to this💙
That is really something and I love that you shared your experiences. I would love to see some of those quilts :)
You are very skilled, talented, and resourceful. Your quilts are lovely and imaginative. ❤❤
Thank-you for all this wonderful praise! its very encouraging.
Omgoodness that’s wonderful!!!🥰 Well actually x2😝 Are there any stamping or labels on either piece? It might help you identify the 2 extra pcs as well as give you something to research. Just a thought, I’m sure you’ll have hours of fun. ❤️😀
Thanks - my husband found a photo on line about the extra pieces. I'm so eager to get going with them!
Both my grandmothers quilted. One made art quilts that never graced a bed and the other set up a quilt frame on her front porch and her neighbours helped her quilt her scraps into warm blankets for her family’s beds.
Wow! I love that you had a little bit of both sides to grow up with.
Answer: because it isn't garbage! ❤
You said it :) Thanks!
Wow, the cost of new fabric these days!😮 I am happy to see "utility quilts" used, rather than all that beautiful work stashed in a closet.
Thank you! Me too!
Im impressed!! So very lovely. Handknitted garments are like handstitched quilts. Shows love in every stitch
Thank you so much!
All the cleverness. I love it!
Thank you! 😁
You are living my dream with that quilting frame! The memories of my Grandmother and Grand Aunts at the quilting frame are priceless to me. I always wanted hers, but it disappeared :( Use it, love it, and make memories!
Thanks so much! I'm eager to try it out!😄
Is this a hand quilting frame? Are you interested in machine quilting? If so, you might want to check out the Cutie Breeze frame. It can be used with your domestic sewing machine. Not affiliated in any way, just enjoy my Cutie.
Yes its a hand quilting frame. Thanks for the tip about the machine frame too! I'm not ruling anything out at this point. 😀🪡
You go girl! Have fun!
Thank-you! 😃
You are not alone, I feel the same way.
Thank-you! All the best working with your stash and have fun! 😀
Good for you! I gope you don't have any problems with them. By the way, the music is far too loud, especially in comparison to the volume of your voice.
Thanks! and thanks for letting me know about the music! - I was too excited about my frame! 😁
As someone who quilts on a budget, and loves scraps and scrap quilts, I love your approach 💙
Thank-you! Thanks for your comment and it's always reassuring to know that I'm not the only one out here working on my craft/art on a budget. 😀
Imagine my shock when I saw that they buy everything precut and just assemble it with their special quilt machines. That's like buying a 5000 oven to bake store bought cookie dough. Where is the fun in that?!
Wow what a great analogy - you're right it is fun to just make do with what one has! Thanks! 😁
@@DelightfullyDara That's the original tradition. Using scraps and making a memory blanket. The memories from the scraps and working together to make the quilt.
I love using thrusted fabric from shirts, sheets, etc
Me too!😀 - thanks for your comment!
This was a fun video!
Thank-you!😀
Just found your channel!! I found my tribe!! I also quilt (make utility blankets) from our family's old clothes, thrifted scraps sold in bags, and bed linens. I like making utility blankets as opposed to expensive art quilts because it is easier and fun to construct, no pressure, and will be actually used rather than stashed away. Also, since I can not quilt like a pro, I'm not hanging any quilts on a wall.
I'm so glad you found my video! Its fun to make something useful from "garbage" and those quilts you make are keeping your people warm - which is what they are supposed to do. It is still "art" though - practical art 😀
I want to make stuff that will actually get used
Wonderful!! Why does everyone think it's weird to use upcycled stuff? Quilts used to be made from the scraps of sewing, and the unworn parts of clothing. It was only in the late 1970's that buying fabric specifically for quilting came into vogue. At that time much of the fabric for sewing clothing was synthetic knits and not suitable for quilting. Now quilting has become more of an art form rather than making bedding to keep your family warm. I would have fit in well with the Depression Era quilters. I make quilts from other quilters leftovers, men's shirts, my own sewing leftovers, and cotton sheets (flannel or plain). When it's not perfect I remember my father's motto: A blind man would be happy to see that! Keep up the great work.
I couldn't agree more with your thoughts and I remember wearing those synthetic knits in the 70's! I love turning left overs and unwanted stuff into useful warm quilts too. Thanks for sharing your story about your dad - so cute. ☺
Love using old shirts and clothing when I can. Greart video. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much! 😀
