Cosmonaut Valentin Bondarenko after a swim. No sound.
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.3 года назад
Valentin Bondarenko (1937-1961) was a Ukrainian pilot, selected for the first cosmonaut group, which included Yuri Gagarin. He died in an accidental fire in a high-pressure oxygen environment in a soundproofed altitude chamber during testing/training. The incident and his existence was hushed up and not publicly revealed until the 1980s. I think that's Pavel Belyayev behind him. Part of footage...

      Boyington himself said the TV show was bullshit. You won't see accuracy here. But there were young IJN pilots who trolled the US bases in the South Pacific. Sakai put on an air show above Howland Island 【笑】 Harachi's (written 原知} name was originally Hirachi in the script. 日本語があまり上手じゃないです。私

      @@TasteTheRad1um さん Thank you for your reply. In recent years, Japan has produced many historically accurate war chroniclers, including Saburo Sakai's notes. It is a well-known fact that there is a lot of bullshit. For more information, please search the link and use the translation function to confirm. By the way, I read Mr. Boynton's work in Japanese translation. I liked Boynton's sense of humor and modesty. ⇓ ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%9D%82%E4%BA%95%E4%B8%89%E9%83%8E

    I loved watching that show as a kid in school. The trainer reminded me of one that used to fly out of a small local airport in the late 1980s. I was twenty then and knew the owner. He would sometimes buzz the gravel pit I worked at and give us a friendly wing wave. He's long since past away. I don't know what happened to the trainer.

    Why do they have a trainer in the middle of the South Pacific??Very campy, contrived, and over-acted . . . but the pre-teen me absolutely loved every second of the show!! Still entertaining and it’s great to see those majestic F4Us.

    • @johnfkiii
      @johnfkiii Месяц назад

      @@danielcamacho1913 Na, the plane is a NA T-6 Texan. They were dedicated trainers only deployed to training bases in the US (w/ exception of those sold to the RAF) and wouldn't have been just lying around on a mobile Marine Airbase. These planes had neither the range nor capacity to be assigned to a combat zone. Nonetheless, it's a great scene--I still remember being glued to the TV and cheering the squadron on when this episode aired back in the '70s. In fact, I'm still willing to suspend my disbelief to enjoy it. Cheers.

    The SNJ gussied up to look a like Zero was bad but tolerable enough. But the bone-dry California coast supposedly representing the lush Solomons is just too beyond the pale. Even as a kid watching this in the late 70s this discordance was jarring. And even Pappy stooging about in a 2-seater trainer would be dead meat against a pair of '43 class A6M boys. Come to thinking about gunnery, close-ups always showed the Zeros firing only the 7.7mm cowl MGs. I have no recollection of wing cannon fire being shown or suggested.

    Were the flying scenes done with R C models. It seems like staging that with actual planes and pilots would have been beyond the budget of a TV show.

    • @danielcamacho1913

      In the US military they still don't. Military mechanics are enlisted, and you have to be a commissioned officer to fly a plane. Conversely, officers aren't allowed to attempt maintenance on a plane, because they're not mechanics.

    I loved this show when I was a kid, and was happy to overlook wild departures from plausibility, but sometimes they had preposterous details when something closer to reality could have just as easily been done. Like "meet me over the Slot at 4pm." The slot is at least 70 miles wide and 170 miles long (depending on how you count). "Meet me South of Ballale island at 4pm" would have been a little closer to some reality based scale. "Meet me in Texas next Tuesday, Joe."
