Today we talk to Kyoshi John Evans, discussing what makes an effective system of swordsmanship. The interview covers his life as an Anglican monk before living and training in Japan, spirituality, philosophy and the warriors mindset. If you watched our ten part RUclips mini-series on Achille Marozzo’s Spada a Due Mani, you may recall it ending in a decision. With my school closed due to a globa...

Why no facemasks?
It's a demonstration, they follow a strict pattern so masks are not necessary.😄
Thank you for this sincere and honest exploration of martial arts
They fighting with fences now??
Wtf is that 😂
Which part confuses you?
This video deserves a better title and thumbnail, I completely skipped it until I saw the short you uploaded (3 months after the video was uploaded). I don't know what to say about the title, but the thumbnail should be of some action with the polearm, and the title should *probably* refer to that as well. I appreciate the desire to avoid clickbait stuff (and you should), but you don't do the community any favors if we don't see it.
that spear method looks very similar to chinese martial arts spear methods...pretty cool....how were these methods preserved over the years?
They were either written or printed in books. A surprisingly large number of these are preserved for this system :)
I am first Subscribe
Hi, What's the lenght of your partisan?
Hi Cosmo, the tip should be at the height of your fully raised arm :)
This is great! I really appreciate the Meastro's philosophy. Thanks for sharing.
Nice..very clear and well laid out and easy to use as a resource ,to add to your descriptors "Ragwort" in the lower right corner
A good clear demonstration including the hand swapping
Nicely done as always. You do find some great places to film!
It is a joy to see dedication to the study and practice of the martial arts. I have spent over 40 years doing so and still feel as though I have just scratched the surface. Long may you continue.
Very nice work!
Nice!
Fantastic stuff!
Great interview! How fast something can change "...in five years, you can lose it" (+40:22) Yikes...
Very nice underrated channel! Keep it up love the content
Thank you ^^
That red tassle reminds me of Chinese spearmanship, were those also incorporated into European polearms or was this just your personal aesthetic choice?
Hi Riyad, the colour of the tassel was my aesthetic, but heavy silk tassels we common on European polearms too. Usually with a large, ornamental knot just beneath the head of the polearm.
I really enjoyed watching the video/listening to John's explanations and experiences he made on his journey. Especially Nakamura Sensei was a remarkable/once in a lifetime teacher heavily impacting John.
Very cool! Got me reading about Miyamoto Musashi. I didn't realise one of my favourite tracks from the 90s was about his Niten Ichi Ryu dual-wielding technique. This is a short musical and video representation of his martial journey. <ruclips.net/video/7nN3veRaf8k/видео.html> Via this I discovered Musashi's 21 'Dokkoko' precepts for living and particularly: "16. Do not collect weapons or practice with weapons beyond what is useful." This is extremely wise and individual as what is useful for each of us is so very different. Are we practicing and collecting mindfully? Training is good, but not to the point we are overtrained and exhausted or that it interferes with relationships, work, etc, or that we are training mindlessly without a goal and never improving. Thanks for making this, it is a really interesting and thought-provoking interview on many points. Especially the core!! I have recently been teaching this intuitively: feel the PoB of the sword and especially of your own body and move around those, keeping them close and in line between you and the opponent 🙏 I'm also trying to teach people to make cuts when they fence rather than doing what I call 'bonk fencing'.. Being able to actually cut is so important.
‘Bonk fencing’ has just entered my lesson terminology…
Very nice! This is starting to take shape and Partisan just might have to be my introduction to Marozzo at this point.
Hey there! I really enjoy your videos - your form is just amazing, the historical tidbits are always neat and the setting is wonderful - but I must admit I find it very difficult to learn a weapon purely through the presentation of actions. I understand that it's being faithful to the sources, but would you consider making a slightly longer "intro" video that goes through the basics - the guards, blows, fundamental concepts, and how these relate to the more complex sequences displayed in the actions? I have in mind something like the first of Björn Rüther of Hammaborg's halberd/staff videos. Just a suggestion at any rate! Thanks for your time in making these!
Hi Ryeka, of course, but it takes a long time to make a one and a half minute video. So one a week is already tricky around other commitments :) these were started primarily as an aid for my students, but I could look at something like you describe in a few weeks maybe.
Hi there The channel of Aurélien Calonne has some good videos breaking down Marozzo’s sword fighting style !
Excellent work! Thank you.
I really appreciate these videos as they are a great reference point. Thank you very much!
I’m glad they serve some purpose ^^
Fascinating! Amazing to actually see demonstrated at full speed and skillfully! This kind of weapon was around even back in Charlemagne's time I think. Lots of history here!
Thank you for turning the words on the page of the great master into something tangible and real!
I’m glad you found it helpful :)
@@tempusfugitives503 The cultural continuity to pagan times is also fascinating!
These videos are great! Might be better with a bit more explanation though. I had to rewatch a few times before I got a handle on it.
Aha! I see what you mean now by a new format!
Nice partisan :)
Great Stuff!
I love the power and dynamism in your movements. I've been following for a while. Thanks! I also wanted to ask you where you got your pants. Those look comfy and stylish to train in.
I bought them off eBay as harem pants, but by the sounds of it, I should slap a label on them and put them in the shop 😅
@@tempusfugitives503 Puffy pants make you fight better... It is known.
Where did you get your montante from?
Hi Kieran, here you go :) tempus-fugitives.co.uk/wp-admin/post.php?post=11516&action=edit
Man thank you so much for these breakdowns. I don't have a lot of time to spend studying the manuscripts and this helps so much
THANK YOU for putting an opponent in these videos! ❤
Interesting
I would love to see these actions done as partner exercises, as visualizing what the other guy is doing in the bolognese plays is sort of hard for me given the number and sequence of actions involved
Yes, but I started these videos in lockdown last year, and the lockdown hadn’t ended! Hopefully I can do these as a partner exercise once it is safe to do so.
Nice footwork / movement! Quite similar to what's practiced in Chinese Dao(sabre) and jian (sword). and a bit of qiang (spear). "Pick a star on the left" in the "xuan xuan dao" is the closest to what you're demonstrating. The same considerations of the opponents potential are considered...
I think you will like our upcoming spear videos then ;)
Hey thanks for sharing in Witcher 💰💰 Toss a Coin 💰💰 Discussions
I would love to learn this.
This whole vid made me think "slow is controlled, controlled is fast", really inspiring.
Great! What sword are you using?
Hi Florian, I use my old Black Fencer. But the new ones are actually much better ;) tempus-fugitives.co.uk/product/marozzo-two-handed-sword-v4
@@tempusfugitives503 thx for the answer. I thought "Strange, that looks kinda like my BF Montante" but of course: Why shouldn't they build other Greatswords too? :D Damn! Now I want one too!
Clearly presented, bravo!
Nice, been curious how fighting with the Billhook was done.
This is an absolute gem. Thank you so much for making this and well done to you all.
Outstanding, such a delight to hear, grazie mille!
This is really awesome, thank you so much for this interview. Maestro Paolo shared some great insights.
Some of these feints, and combos will be most effective if combined with half-swording as well. When will you make more videos?
Hello, sorry for the late response. There is a bit of a gap right now while we work on a larger production (being published here soon), but shall have the next video in the series up in the very near future :)
Very useful techniques, will be helpful in HEMA sparring matches.
Looks effective, and tricky. I like it. Thank you.
