Hi friends!
I'm Master of Public Health graduate student with an interest in improving access to genetic counseling services especially to minority populations. I was a genetic counselor assistant for four years in two different institutions.
Here you'll find my thoughts about genetic counseling, public health, and research!
I also have an Instagram page where I share other graduate school resources and funny videos about working in clinical research.

Addressing the elephant in the room: why I didn't reapply for genetic counseling programs
Просмотров 6052 года назад
Hi friends! Today's video is about the reasons why I decided a master's in genetic counseling wasn't right for me! Originally I was going to include the differences between a MSc and MPH degree, but it ended up being much more about my own personal reasons for not reapplying. I'll have to do another video or a Instagram post about that later instead! Also I had to refilm a part of the video bec...

The truth about why I didn't match (genetic counseling application feedback)
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.2 года назад
Hi friends! :) Today I'll be talking about: - How the application feedback process works - What my background is/what sort of applicant I was - What feedback I received I forgot to include in the video that a few of the programs also suggested becoming a clinical genetic counselor assistant and linked opportunities to apply for. Also I'm sorry for my use of "you guys" during the video, I should...

Thank you. By listening to you, I added more important skills to my resume.
You're so welcome! Feel free to leave another comment if you have any other questions for me 😄
Thank you! I had no idea the process was that long. I was expecting just 1 interview. Thanks to you, I will be more prepared.
That's wonderful! Best of luck to you on your job search and thank you for the kind comment ☺️
Love this! Thank you
I'm glad you like this video! Thanks so much for watching! 😄
I’m wondering what your undergrad degree was in?
Thank you!!!
You're welcome! 😊 Let me know if you have any other questions!
How did you ASK for the feedback? Did you ask this to schools that you applied to and didn't interview with or only schools you interviewed with? TIA
Hi Kay, this is a great question! I am planning on making an Instagram post about this - but I asked via email and asked all programs that I applied to, regardless of whether or not I received an interview. That way programs that didn't send me an interview invite could give me feedback on my application package (resume, personal statement, letters of recommendation, etc.).
You should research the patents on the cures for cancer
Yes that's one of my passions and I'm actually working on that now! For my current job I'm researching how different treatments affect cancer patient outcomes.
I have a bachelor's in molecular biology and have been working as an EHR analyst for 3 years. Hoping my IT background gives me a leg up. This video was such a great help! thank you!
That's certainly a unique work experience! You can definitely talk about certain situations in your job that has helped prepare you for a GC program in your personal statement and interviews. You're totally welcome! Good luck with your applications! 🤗
Thanks for the insight 🙏 it’s nice to hear from your perspective. I keep failing to get a GCA position 🤦🏻♀️ 😂 but hopefully I can apply what you’ve shared with us here!
GCA positions are super competitive! The person I was replacing for my second GCA position also had prior work experience. It's possible that you'd be a more competitive applicant for this kind of job after having more work experience. And people are able to get accepted into GC programs without being a GCA too, so it goes both ways! Good luck with your job search! 😊
@@genesunravelled you’re right 😃 thank you for the encouragement!
Hi I’m so sorry for bothering but would you ever think about making a video on your educational journey and how you found out what the requirements are? I am a first generation student and figuring everything out on my own has been a huge struggle. You acc is a life saver!
Aw thank you for the sweet compliment, Loren! Making a video about my educational journey sounds like a great idea - I'll have to add it to the list of items to film! As for the pre-requisite requirements, I essentially looked at the program websites for each of the programs I was interested in and wrote down anything I was still missing. Hope that helps!
My masters was the biggest waste of time ever! Nothing like being stuck in an echo chamber with a bunch of parrots
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that your masters degree was not a meaningful learning experience. There definitely can be differences in quality for some types of masters programs.
Thank you for this, so helpful!
Laura, thank you for the compliment, I'm so glad you found this video useful! :)
Hi! May I know where you get the statistics for applicants and successful rate etc? Thx!
Hi Joey! Thank you for your question! I don't think I can post links without the comment being flagged so I'll try to guide you in finding the information: search up "genetic counseling match statistics" and find the page that belongs to the National Matching system (natmatch). It should have statistics since 2018 which is when GC programs started implementing the Match system. If you're having trouble finding the page, DM me on Instagram and I can send you the link there! Hope that helps :)
So what are you going to do now?
Hi Kiara, that's a good question! I'm currently working in clinical trials research helping patients get treatment for their cancer and I am also pursuing a Master's degree in Public Health. I hope that my job will help me better understand the barriers to screening and treatment, especially for those who have a hereditary cancer syndrome. Additionally I am learning skills in the program that will allow me design and evaluate community interventions related to that!
You were a good candidate, you just need to show it more! As a STEM major it is sometimes so hard to talk about yourself, but with genetic counseling it really is about the humanness.
Kiara, you are so sweet! I appreciate you saying that :) You are definitely right that it can be difficult for me to talk about myself - I feel like as a STEM major we are conditioned to think that our research/work is the only measure of success or what other people care about. However in the genetic counseling field, it's soooo important to show the more human side of yourself to help the patient feel more comfortable.
Thank you so much for your video!! :)
You're welcome! :D btw I'm also editing a video now on why I decided to not reapply for genetic counseling programs and pursue a MPH instead if that's a topic you're also interested in! I plan to publish it in the next few days~
thank you for sharing!!
You are so welcome! Hope you found it to be helpful! 😄
Hloo mam ... I'm doing msc human genetics.. can I become a genetic counselor??? Plzz respond mam
Hi there! It depends on what country you're getting your degree in and where you plan to practice. Here in the United States, you need to pass the American Board of Genetic Counseling to become a board certified genetic counselor and then depending on the state, you may also need to apply for a license. Since you are still in your master's program, I would suggest reaching out to your academic advisor or program director to see if they have any guidance for you on what you may need to do before you can be a genetic counselor!
