Life is messy. But in the midst of life’s messiness, there is Jesus standing right with us and walks with us. We are mere humans prone to make mistakes. Love means always willing to forgive. When we forgive the other person, we forgive ourselves. We all need healing. May we have peace in our hearts. Thank you, Fr. Tom. Have a blessed week ahead. ❤ 🙏

I think the word for this Gospel is Comm__union. In the Gospel of John at the conclusion of the bread of life discourse,, Jesus declares, **Unless you eat my flesh you have no life in you. His language was and is non- metaphorical and calls for belief in Him on a foundation of love. It appalled many of Jesus’s followers and resulted in them leaving. Then he turned to his apostles and said “will you leave me too?” Jesus-the spiritual Bread-nourishes our souls. He offers true gladness and eternal life in paradise by inviting us to believe in Him and his transformative word. Choosing to follow Jesus means learning to love him and having Him at the center of our lives, becoming conformed to Christ. If we learn to know Jesus, love Jesus , decide to follow Jesus and surrender our hearts to Jesus, he will enter our lives, 2 will become one,, a true ‘communion’ if you will.l He will guide us in every decision. As the song lyrics suggest we will take the cup of life and call upon God’’s name. Solace, true gladness and joy result. Acquinas referred this union to as deification, Augustine said see what you believe and become what you receive ….and in doing so we will experience the immense privilege of encountering Jesus in this life. Proper reception of the Eucharist allows us to share in his divinity , become lifted up, divinized and sanctified in the most radical sense possible. This is the essence of Christianity and the ascribed meaning of the term Christian ( little Christ) - There are many distractions in life which will steal your heart and your faith. You must decide whom you will serve. When faced with the question of whether to allow Jesus to enter our lives and follow Jesus we must recognize that not choosing is, in itself, the choice to not follow Jesus. Don't just go thru the motions. This is your opportunity to know and come to love Jesus. If you choose Jesus you get Jesus. This is your opportunity to meet Jesus, Jesus who loves you and died for you. ..the God that sent you the Holy Spirit to guide you. You will find out that God is real. You will begin to appreciate his unparalleled goodness. If we choose to follow Jesus it is likely there will come a time when we fail. . There is a hidden virtue in sin and failure. If you choose to follow Jesus and fail you will have the profound privilege and the great joy to meet the God of grace. When we call Him He will always be near. We have nothing to lose. We have a limited number of heartbeats and a finite number of steps. To whom will your heart turn. Where will your steps take you? You must decide. We are told what the Eucharist is but not how to receive it. St Theresa in her text The Way of Perfection is most helpful in this regard. She explains and I paraphrase. When you receive Jesus in Holy Communion for a very brief time you have him in a way you will never experience again until you receive communion again. He is wonderfully present within yourself. She advises us to close our eyes for 5 or 10 minutes. Enter within ourselves and experience him. Enter within and look at him. Enter within and let him look at you and touch you. If you receive communion once per week, this is the most important moment of your week.

The law is a beautiful thing as highlighted in the first reading. In general terms the law serves the common good as well as to protect us. However, it can also be used maliciously such as in vengeful, greed driven, inappropriate and unnecessary lawsuits. The Gospel reading last Sunday was as usual very rich in theological content but it also touched on malicious use of the law. The Pharisees made an observation purely in an effort to discredit Jesus implying that we certain actions are necessary to be in compliance with God's deepest wishes Jesus, recognizing their malicious intent, refutes this. He explains that virtue, holiness, and one's relationship with God are not determined by external actions like hand washing but rather by the kind of person you are. God looks into our souls, just as he did with the rich young man, recognizing his goodness. On judgment day God will peer deep into our souls and see what's within us, far beyond the bare minimum prescription we have followed. He will see both serious sins and lesser defects where we have ‘missed the mark (target).” Most of us carry at least one of these lesser flaws such as folly, pride, malice or envy or anything else which hinder us from being the kind of person God intended. In a sense, life is a test. In order to pass, we need to free of all these things. That's a big challenge because few of us are free of all those things. Therefore, it initially seems the path to being a Christian is not easy. It's a path however that leads to truth. The truth of what? The truth of who we are as compared to what we were meant to be. We need to recognize and abide in that truth. Furthermore, we must recognize where work needs to be done and act upon it. It is not a Pharisaical cleansing outside that is required but rather a cleansing within. But why? Among other reasons , our heavenly reward depends on it. It sounds intimidating but if we try, we will see His “yoke is easy and burden light’. Secondly, St. Paul, tells us we are called to be temples of the Holy spirit. The purpose of the 'cleansing within’ is to prepare a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit. . We must earnestly try to become the persons we were meant to be. This initially daunting challenge is only made possible with the gifts and assistance of the Holy Spirit whom Jesus has promised and sent. With honest effort God will come to us. Our souls will become a place where the Holy Spirit resides. He will help us finish the necessary work . With confidence we can say this goal is indeed achievable because we are all called to be tabernacles of the Holy Spirit. So let us commit to this path. He is the way the Truth and the life. We will soon see myriad benefits. If you do, do not be surprised when you encounter God, not only in the Eucharist, but in everyday life as well.
