I just saw the movie Red Dust, after watching Gone With The Wind, It Happened One Night and Call of the Wild. Clark Gable was unparalleled in acting because he didn't act. He's one of those actors who always play themselves if they can. I wish there were men today as masculine as Clark Gable. Even his personality is agreeable, because when you claim no pride or importance you have no room to fall. His humility put him above others, because they could call him every name except egotistical and conceited, and he'd agree with them. "Why should anyone take bows for being a part of a good motion picture? Conceit is a disease of the very young,” - Clark Gable, in an interview by Gladys Hall in 1941. "If I can’t believe what I’m doing, I can’t make others believe it. That’s not being an actor," he went on to say. "..if I figured out in advance what I was going to do in a scene, I’d be so self-conscious, I’d be thinking about my big hands and feet instead of what the scene means.” And to sum it up, "I’m being serious. Yes, I agree. But I think the main reason Scarlett wanted Ashley was because she thought being with such a "good, kind person" would better her somehow, or is what she needed. Plus, he kept saying things like "I love you, it's just that I'm with Melanie..." when he should've officially broken it off, and at least have the courtesy to tell her he was marrying Melanie instead of her hearing it from other people. Ashley is wishy-washy, and Scarlett saw him through rose colored glasses.
