Week 95 of Sunday Covers is a traditional song sung at this time of year.. In Pembrokeshire, where the song was collected, a wren was hunted and killed to symbolise the death of winter and then placed in a garlanded box and taken from door to door. At each house this song was sung and the occupants asked to pay to see the dead wren with the words “Please to see the King.”

Week 94 of Sunday Covers is probably an appropriate one for this time of year! It's another great Glen Tilbrook/Chris Difford song and one of my favourite Squeeze songs although not as well known perhaps as many others.

Tremendous John!
Thank you Chris!
In my humble opinion, John, this is up there with the most beautiful songs ever written. You perform it with sensitive beauty and charm, my friend. One of my favourite albums is Eddi Reader singing Burns. And, oh, we had our haggis, neeps and tatties as we always do. A wonderful way to close my day, my friend.
Thank you Robin. I agree with you, Eddie Reader's Burns' album is a cracker.

I feel like I've just heard this masterpiece for the first time in 50 years. What a gentle, directly, touching performance, vocally and instrumentality. I'm a musician, and this brought me to tears, several times.

Beautiful, John. Thank you for taking the time to share such a treasure for us. I know The Cutty Wren is celebrated in various places throughout the U.K. although much less than it used to be. For the very first time this year a family in our village decided to revive it & we had a celebration & small procession with a wren pole. We sang some traditional Cutty Wren songs, though this one is new to me. No wrens were harmed of course. 😉
Thank you Suzanne. It's good to hear you revived the tradition. The Mari Llwyd is still celebrated here in South Wales and in my old home town in Lincolnshire they still do The Ploughjag (a mumming play) which was revived by a friend and I always took part in it when I lived there.
I couldn't like it more if I tried, John. Your performance of this beautiful song soothes my soul, my friend.
Thanks Robin and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful John! I have always loved this song - great harmony opportunities! However, until you explained its meaning, I had no idea of the story behind it. Really enjoyed this.
