Flying airplanes! Climbing Mountains! And the best things of life and how I accomplish them!
Your Not a Bad Pilot, your just at the wrong flight school.
Here is an interview with Joel, one of our students talking about what it was like to go from one school where they didn't feel like they were capable of becoming a pilot to one that supported him and helped him grow.

Dispise taildraggers 😂
@@sebrofc yeah they can be challenging! But it’s what makes them fun
🥳
It’s utah
What state?
hey man not trying to be a dick, it's just a tiny mistake, but you used the wrong your in the title
"Your just at the wrong flight school"? Doesn't anybody know proper English? It should be "you're".
Yeah thanks for letting us know
You're not a bad instructor, unless you're teaching English. ; ) Srsly, best to you.
Yep exactly! Glad we are not teaching English!
What a stud 🔥
You know it thanks for helping him as well
Thanks for the video! I'm at TVY learning in a Luscombe and the wheel landings are giving me trouble.
I got this on my stage check
you install tires with a 337 ?
And field approval
Newly certified tailwheel pilot landing 3-points on grass runways in a Champ. Wondering what to expect when transitioning to asphalt runways?
Asphalt is far less forgiving, so take your time make sure you’re straight! And make sure to use the proper xwind control, I see more ground loops because the try to drive the plane inside fly it!
Just got a gorgeous 170B and wanted to know your thoughts on best of airport tire & size for 6” Cleveland
If your a 170 size or below plane my favorite tire is the dresser 8:50 4ply tundra tire
Great vid. Love what you’re doing! Would a Cessna 140 with a C 85 12F keep up with you? Or should I go bigger? I’m 30 hours into my PPL journey and just want to fly. Tail wheel really fascinates me so that will my first airplane to purchase.
It’s all about weight! If you can keep it light and you’re not big it can do it! But weight is everything when it comes to flying in tight places!
@@kobet6 thx. I’m a buck 160,wet!
Took a sec😂
Just did Tailwheel backcountry training with Bret and it was awesome! I couldn’t believe I got to do this! Bret made it accessible and manageable. My commercial CFIs were so impressed with my landings when I got back home. 😎
Thanks Jack it was a pleasure!
Great video thanx and regards from Europe !
Thanks
Often on C-140s the wrong spring is on the tailwheel. 140s should always use the “early” model spring. The camber of the wheel should be level or slightly front down when you have the plane loaded normally. The wobble you have is probably caused by a slightly front up angle. Shouldn’t happen if properly set up
Yeup.
I love to fly the 170
Wheel landings are challenging but fun when you can stick those mains on the runway smoothly
Yes they are!
If you want a real life situation stall spin, try 10 flaps, as you would in a take off setting... full power after reducing airspeed to normal climb speed... feet flat on the floor and a 10 degree right turn....
Thank you for putting this up.
The prop is full fine, why are you talking about MP?
Throttle is still MP even at fine pitch! And MP is a better power measurement to set from
Many fun hours on my 1948 170, should never have sold her.
Question isn't the elevator supposed to be neutral or down? Looks like you have up elevator dialed in the whole time. Thanks.
It depends on what your trying to Accomplish! to Spin the 170 you have to keep the elevator full aft or you will breck the stall and the spin ends.
This plane is bad ass! I love it
I only flew 36 hours in the US (before returning to the UK) back in 1998. We did stall recovery but not spin recovery. I only restarted flying lessons after a 22-year hiatus but we don't do stall/spin recoveries during the PPL. Unsure if they do it for CPL though.
Yeah in the USA we have to go through spin and advanced stall training to be a flight instructor, but I recommend it for everyone!
I made inquires to a Cessna organisation regarding spins and aerobatics in 170 aircraft . It appears the weight and balance of some 170 aircraft are not that accurate due to the aircraft’s history . It was also high lighted that these are 75 year old aircraft and the type of flight history is not recorded or known . While it does state iin the utility area it can be spun but with limitations . As I previously stated the vertical fin attachment is a fitting is that cracks . A Cessna engineer warned me about that fitting and the rear spar of the vertical fin. When was it last crack tested . This area was highlighted in the SIDS program by Cessna . Plus the trailing edge spar of the main wing is now presenting issues of corrosion and cracking . I have done over 1600 hrs in my 170 and to me she is an elegant old lady.
I was born in 1947, flew a 1947 Cessna 140 for years. I believe these priceless antique gems should only be flown with the greatest care. Learning acrobatics is exciting, and a spin is a basic aerobatic maneuver that everyone should practice at least once a year, both left and right, entering with or without power. it's about improving your ability to save your life, and the lives of your passengers. There are totally unexpected weather events that can and have torn aircraft apart when the stresses exceeded their design parameters and being proficient at recovering from unexpected attitudes will save your life. But intentionally inflicting stresses on 50 to 100+ year old aircraft parts is beyond stupid, it's criminal negligence. Ask any aeronautical engineer they will tell you the same thing. All metal, especially the parts you can't see, especially in an annual, fatigues over time when stressed. Use a much newer aircraft with an instructor with many hours in type and don't be embarrassed to wear a chute. Fly safe, fly smart and stay alive to fly another day. My prayers are with you.
I totally agree with mark, I have worked in the aviation industry since 1971 and now a retired engineer. Worked for the military and different airlines including the regulatory authorities. Yes it’s a great idea to fly within the regulations and the aircraft design limitations and even smarter to use common sense when flying and leave ego on the ground .
Structurally a spin is a pretty benign maneuver. It's all low airspeed and low G. If I wasn't confident in the structure of the aircraft in a spin, I would not be comfortable flying it in level flight. Nice video!
do not spin a 170 it’s not approved . i asked a test pilot from cessna many years ago about as i was under the impression during a spin the aircraft is stalled . yes his answer was but the rudder and mounts isn’t designed for a safe recovery for the recovery from a spin.
Show me where it’s written!!
It’s not written that the aircraft can’t be flown inverted also . i am going through all the info i have on the 170 and will show when I find it. This aircraft is not aerobatic . The rear vertical rudder spar is so,flimsy.
UTILITY "No acrobatic maneuvers approved except those listed in the Airplane Flight Manual. Baggage compartment and rear seat must not be occupied." Intentional spins are listed in the airplane flight manual in the utility category. Interesting
Actually it is written that it can not be flown for aerobatics. It’s all in the 170 pilot operation manual! Check it out
I would be very carefull what I put on U tube as the FAA does look at U tubers and aircraft member clubs .
Where is that at
It’s in northern Utah
@kobet6 thanks! I live in Alaska it looks like home!
Yeah Utah in the winters does look like it just a bit
Love the video how hard was it to get your air plane license an how much did it cost
It’s not terribly hard it can take some people if you can dedicate 3 days a week to flying a month and a half if not it can take over a year! If you plan on around 16k you should have enough to get your private pilots license
Love this view angle. Very cool.
I love to see the Aoa as the stall breaks
Beautiful, took the Antilope island, Garfield stacks, point of the mountain route below the bravo. I know you don’t have to but were you on flight following?
I was not on flight following but was listening in on the frequencies!
All pilots need a tailwheel sign-off at the very least. Nothing like enriching your abilities. Our C-120 keeps us in the game w/ our C-195. Plus, saves on fuel!
Totally agree!!
Your a lucky man . Beautiful children.
Years ago my grandfather Gerald Lautenschlager flew and worked on this plane. Lots of childhood memories in this airplane. We talk about her all the time.
He is such a great mechanic and so glad I get to know him and how he rebuilt her!
Works well for me and several others I know that have it on their 170,170A and B
Love the short landing
I do notice with all of the landings I see on you tube even with heavy iron or GA a/c. Be that with narrow body or wide body a/c. Most of the demos I see pilots do not seem to attempt to even try and nail the centre line. This particular example is no different. Complications can further occur by not nailing the correct touchdown point, as displayed on the runway. My preferred method of landing of tailwheel a/c is as often as possible to carry out a 3 point landing as you must be in the correct configuration at the correct airspeed. The landing will then be successful by a defined set up where by the landing will work. Wind, et al other real or imagined issues simply will not be a problem because you have set yourself up for a win, win. Also please remember to keep flying some tail wheel type airplane until you can safely turn onto the taxiway or come to a complete stop. This is especially true where stability or other implications or complications of certain tailwheel a/c types more than others due centre of gravity position or some designs, may make slowing or coming to a stop difficult in some ambient conditions. ☮️
Nice! Beautiful plane. Now, give us that full six cyl three blade take off sound
Nice 170 ,
Subbed this is so awesome 😊
Thanks
Nice job!
Sweet
Does this fly basically like a 172 aside from the tailwheel takeoff and landing characteristics?
Similar though the tailwheel adds some technique ability that the trike will not do and vice a verse
Thanks, I’ve got lots of 172 time and scattered tailwheel time. Is it pretty docile as far as tailwheel goes? I’d like to get a checkout and figure this might be a good one to eventually start tailwheel instructing in as I already instruct in 172s and think stepping up to tailwheel instructing might be easier in a plane I’m more familiar with otherwise and that I can see better out of. But I’ve never flown one and haven’t flown much side by side tailwheel.
Your right gear leg is loose, please check it.
Decathlon??
Yep a super D
3 point & 3 landing in one ...🏀🏀🏀 😀😁😂....
Love it! The color of this plane is awesome!!! See y’all Saturday!
