Homage: Rich Gottlieb of the Gunks

www.mistymountain.com - The Gunks, outside of New Paltz, New York, is one of the best crags in the country. Rock quality, protection, history, no aspect of the Gunks falls below three star level. I first climbed there over twenty years ago, and still remember the thrill leading the overhanging High Exposure, which is as full value as any pitch I've ever enjoyed. www.mistymountain.com - There’s something about Misty Mountain that brings amazing people into my life. For example, just last week when I was at Priest Draw for a quick bouldering circuit I ran into two strong climbers from Chattanooga. I had finished my rounds, but thought I’d take a walk and kill some time. As I walked past the Anorexic Roof I noticed a young couple working Carnivore (V8) an...

Usually I see the vertical strips along the back of the hand. Have y’all tried it like that? How would they compare if so? Thanks
Did this route in 1986 I led the Leaning Column and Durrance Crack pitches, as well as the Flake Crack 4th pitch, and finished via the Bailey Direct. Left me wanting more on the Tower, but life intervened otherwise with family illnesses. The Wiessner Route was the first "Modern Technical" climb established by legendary Fritz Wiessner, a German born and educated man from Dresden, who became an American citizen in the 1930's. It's a "scary hard 5.8" climb.
Had an incredible day with Cassy Dolittle on this climb. Such a beautiful day with her. I'll never forget her yelling trying hard as hell on p2.
Thanks Kenny for all you do!
are you bernie sanders brother?
Ship Rock goals!
All mountains are petrified giant wood stumps all minerals xome from these tree stumps you can confirm these, by watching hangman videos and also biblical trees on you tube
Right on!
Giant petrified tree stump all mauntains are
Cool video! I know helmets don’t look cool while bouldering, but what isn’t cool is climbing without helmets and your brains splattered on the rocks. It only takes one slip for you to end up with a traumatic brain injury. And without a spotter you’re setting a bad example for yourself and your company. Think of it this way; if you were an expert kayaker would you paddle the Watauga gorge without one? BTW my wife is a licensed RN,CRN and has seen the consequences of irresponsible actions….
This is fantastic Rich!!
Fox climbing the fox.
That looks like an amazing crack.
What a bad ass
Hug that petrified tree tight
Sick beta thanks!
Go Misty!
Passed by Devil's Tower in '99 on my way to Alaska with climbing gear but no plans to climb. In the parking lot of the campground I was staying at I met a guy dancing wildly in a parking lot with a woman - his cousin. He played piano and they had just finished a performance at a nursing facility and were buzzing with energy from that. I climbed Bon Homme with them the following day and we watched the sun set from the summit and came down in the dark by braille, which was a unique experience for me. I made us a late night breakfast in my trailer and in the morning, after retrieving my pack at the base of the climb, we parted company. I think it was Frank - can't possibly be two guys like that. He had put up a ton of routes there and he was doing engineering or architectural drafting on the side. What an open and welcoming guy he was and what a great day that was. Never thanked you for mailing me the watch I left in your pack - the alarm kept going off and made you two wonder what the heck that noise was. Stellar guy and unforgettable encounter.
"Really great, thin, below tips..." thin and below tips is not great (or fun) in my book, but each to his own. I'll be avoiding this climb.
Which one was your favorite?
Wear a helmet, nice climb.
let him be :)
Well done.Really enjoyed the video & your description.
Well said. I've had many a sleepless night, in my 25 yrs. of climbing, agonizing over what I would lead the next day.No one makes me do it & its certainly not for any tangible reward, except for maybe that clod beer at the end of the day.
Such a good climb
Wow beautiful line and nice clean svideo.
I love the original version, but this is a nice remake of Teardrop. Thanks for the inspiring video of this great climber :)

Where is your helmet?
Where is yours?
I'm climbing this route in a week your video made me feel much more comfortable about doing it and I am looking forward to it much more now. Thank you 🙏🏾
Did you make it?
Thank-you all for sharing this great experience with the rest of us...
Super cool route. This is actually Henar Light, Mr Henar pulls up and through the roof. Looking at how she climbed the beginning im sure she couldve knocked the rest out without too much trouble. The furthest ive ever gotten was about halfway between the 2nd to last clip, and last clip. It gets pretty scary with that runout.
Sandbagging... "Between the Lines"
Mute works great.
Such a bad ass climb, I remember being so ridiculously pumped at the end and fighting so hard for that last move!
Is reaching for your chalk on the ground aide climbing... Hahaha! Just joking with you. Awesome video! Party Mountain
One of my favorite climbing videos along with the handbone one! I hope misty mountain makes more. I learned quite a bit of crack technique from these early on. Huge fan of their products (I own a Cadillac and a Sonic)
Dont people go missing near boulder fields especially in national parks? #Missing411
no, Missing 411 is not credible and has been debunked
Why didn’t she pull the roof? This is only half of the route lol
whats this song!!?
This route looks like a treat!!!
Please wear a helmet when you’re lead climbing.
Squamish 11c?
catchy tune
That is a matter of opinionJesse N!
Nice summit shimmy

You all make some of the best climbing films. They're sort of like portraits of people, places and routes. Keep it up!
