BookTube Prize Ranking & Reviews for the Octofinals: Nonfiction Group A
I read that bookstore book and was a bit confused throughout it.
@@fitjock1 There is something about Japanese fiction that is just slightly off to me. The characters often act weird in ways that make no sense to me so I get that you found it confusing.
Your vlogs are always the best--I love seeing all your surroundings. Another great review of Moon of the Crusted Snow! I have that one queued to listen to on audio. Looking forward to your review of the Dirty Dancing book.
@@EveningReader Thank you ma’am! The Dirty Dancing book was a fun time!
Hi Heidi, I've been following the events in American politics with great interest from here in Canada, so I'm going to look for American Woman. Thanks for mentioning it 😊
@@helenramsay2085 Glad American Woman interests you! I think it fits nicely with current political events!
I love all the scenery! So beautiful! Sounds like your Shorty September is starting off strong. Love how different all your choices are. Happy reading! -Amy
@@ZoeBeck7 Thanks! Getting through these short books is giving me a great sense of accomplishment!
I MUST READ THE DIRTY DANCING BOOK! I was obsessed with that movie as a teenager!
@@awebofstories YOU MUST! It’s super short and really fun!
I have to say that Dirty Dancing was never a favorite movie of mine, but it was unusual in all those ways.
@@BookishTexan Fair enough! 😂 I guess shirtless Patrick Swayze is not for everyone!
I didn’t realize Moon of the Crusted Snow was so short. I have it on my TBR. Every year in winter I think “I need to read that!” And then I don’t get to it. Maybe winter 2024-2025 will be my year. American Women sounds very interesting!
@@theredheadisreading2251 I hope you get to Moon this winter. It’s a good one!
Fun and informative vlog. American Woman by Katie Rogers sounds like a great read for me. Very timely. Scenery between book reviews is so lovely and tranquil❤️
@@vickicoleman2474 Glad you enjoyed the scenic interludes! I am pleased with how much I enjoyed American Woman.
Curious to hear how the Dirty Dancing book works out for you. Loved that movie.
@@alldbooks9165 I enjoyed that very much. So much nostalgia!
Loved, loved, loved this video! Thank you, Heidi!🌷I totally share your opinion on the Morisaki Bookshop. I’ve read two books since that provided a glimpse into the hard work ethics and expected gender roles in Far Eastern societies combining this aspect with the comfort of books, a very special library (and librarian!) and a bookshop. The first is What You Are Looking For is in the Library by the Japanese Michiko Aoyama, the second is Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop by the South-Korean Hwang Bo-reum. The latter was also mentioned by Doris in one of her recent videos from Barcelona. Both books met my expectations, where Morisaki failed to do so and I can warmly recommend them.📚🥰
@@emmavd Thanks for these recommendations! I will add them to my wish list. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
I am just starting my books for Shorty September. This will be my first time participating. I am very interested in the books you are reading for this readathon. They look very good!
@@bookwalk1 lots of time for shorties left in September! It’s very satisfying to finish so many books!
I. AM. HERE. FOR. THIS! I read a "fluffy" shorty today and I'm not mad about it. 262 paged :o I loved Moon of the Crusted Snow! I'm frightened to read the next one because the first one was so good! You made the American Women book sound interesting despite a vintage looking, boring cover! Beautiful view at the end!!!
@@RovingReader thanks! Moon of the Crusted Snow was super good. American Woman was surprisingly good! Love a fluffy read!
Wait! I forget my woolly bear lure, what was that caterpillar telling us about the oncoming winter?
@@bookofdust something to do with the amount of black vs brown color. If more black, harder winter? Something like that.
@@myreadinglife8816 The three segments looked about equal, I think he/ she is hedging their bets!
Moon of the Crusted Snow was very interesting and a good reminder to read the second one! The first book has really stayed with me.
@@svance1041 I have found myself thinking of Crusted Snow quite often the last few days. Lots to ponder in that one.
You might try "The Kamogawa Food Detectives". It was interesting and had strong nostalgia vibes.
@@audreyh7892 Thanks for the recommendation!
Your vlogs are my favorite. ❤️
@@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH Thanks friends!
Lovely video, Heidi! And glad to hear that you liked Moon of the Crusted Snow. I read it a couple of years ago and loved it. The second book in the series is out and should be readily available. It’s called Moon of the Turning Leaves. Have it but haven’t got to it yet. Happy reading!
@@jf8559 thank you for the info on the second book by Rice. I will definitely be purchasing that!
Excited for your shorty Sept vlogs!!❤
@@carlaking3459 thanks for watching!
That last view is so peaceful. This video has messed up my planned TBR for the next week though lol.
@@gemgerm oh dear! What did I catch you with? 😂
Looks like you’ve got some chunky books to sustain you as we get closer to cooler weather! The graphic memoirs look great!
@@bookwalk1 I am a huge fan of big books! And I love to buy them because it feels like a better value! 🙄😂
@@myreadinglife8816 I agree wholeheartedly!
Some non fiction just doesn’t age well 🤷♀️ great work keeping the TBR down despite library sale temptation Heidi!
@@josmith5992 I am trying! Breaking even feels like a win at this point! 😂
Good for you for staying at the same number! That takes dedication when you have library sales.
@@louisep1962 I felt good about it! It is so hard to resist at library sales!
Ooh these two graphic memoirs look fab!! I'm going to see if I can find them! ❤️❤️❤️.
@@TooManyHeathers Everyone seems to love them. Hopefully I will too!
Just came across your channel. I thinks it’s fascinating you’re going through a biography for each president. Something different. I could watch an entire playlist of that. 😂
@@gemgerm LOL I don’t read them quick enough for that! Glad you stopped by!
Net zero book haul and a library sale is quite an accomplishment!
@@awebofstories It felt like a huge win!
Congrats on staying at 106! The Roz Chast book is excellent. I know you have been reading the presidential books for awhile, but what initially inspired the project? (It's a huge and impressive commitment, but I think I would personally tire of reading so many "old white guys". Perhaps you take breaks in between?) 🙂
@@robyn_m Oh gosh yes, I definitely take breaks with the presidential bios. I can’t remember where I initially heard about the challenge but I have been working on it for over ten years. I usually only read two or three presidents a year.
@@myreadinglife8816 It's not a biography, but I really enjoyed the audiobook of "To Obama: With Love, Joy, Anger, and Hope" by Jeanne Marie Laskas. Since letters are featured from Americans on both sides of the political divide, it's a worthy read for most anyone.
The Best We Could Do is an awesome find. I really enjoyed that one. Staying at 106 is definitely a win.
@@FreeFormLady I’m glad to hear you liked The Best We Could Do. That was such an unexpected find!
Staying at 106 after a library book sale is fantastic! And I think I will buy that 2nd graphic memoir as well (from the Vietnamese author).
I was so pleased to keep my TBR at 106!
I was worried there for a minute! Free Lunch is also the title of a middle grade memoir by Rex Ogle that is just about perfect. It’s a heartbreaking tale of his life with an extremely mentally ill mother and being cross cultural with a Mexican American mother and white father who is out of the picture. He has a younger brother he must protect from his mother and he’s a super smart kid which is one of the few threads that serves him and gives him hope and a life line towards the future and to move beyond those circumstances. His emerging sexuality as a Gay guy also underlays his story and threatens to cut him off from his very loving and supportive grandmother who is very religious. It is one of three short poetic and emotional memoirs for young people, and the audiobooks are incredibly well done and moving, I highly recommend them and hope more people read them, especially young people. Of the 30 or so memoirs I read last year they were at the top. So to was the GN about the Asian Family that I read in 2023 as well. And the Chast is a longtime favorite award winning GN memoir from the past and a standout in the genre. I need to reread it as I’m going through all those things with my parents now as well.
@@bookofdust Free Lunch the memoir sounds fabulous. I am sure I would not DNF that one! Glad to hear more positive reviews of the two graphic memoirs I acquired.
I’m trying to catch up with Elizabeth Strout before her new book is released. In August I read Amy & Isabelle Now reading The Burgess Boys I have Abide With Me on my TBR. Really enjoying Abby Hemenez books. I read Just For the Summer in August. Finished Yours Truly yesterday. I like that the characters are facing more than possible romance eg mental health struggles/ family problems/ health issues etc I’d recommend you some Irish books too This Is Happiness by Niall Williams ( set in Kerry in 1960s) The Alternatives by Caoilinn Hughes ( 4 sisters one goes missing) The Coast Road by Alan Murrin ( set in Donegal just before the referendum on divorce)
@@jacquelinemcmenamin8204 I need to read some more Strout. I think my next one will be Oh William. I love a good romance novel, and I agree hers deal with mental health and other struggles very well. Hearing lots of good things about Coast Road.
I think staying at 106 in August is very well done. 👍 Free lunch sounds like an interesting read, but I get that it's probably outdated. Some books simply have a due date. 🙂 Seems like your library book sales are really good. 😍 I agree, I think you did well in August!
@@LunaciaBooks It feels good to stay in place. At least I didn’t add on. And I felt proud of myself for my restraint at the library book sale!
@@myreadinglife8816 You should be!
I haven’t started the series yet but if I see an Elizabeth George book at the charity shops I always grab it 😂
@@jay_poet Excellent plan! Someday you will be glad you have them! LOL
I’m glad the FDR is good. I want to read about LBJ but I bet you’ll get there before I do, as your dedication is stronger. I first became intrigued by him when we visited his library years ago, after which I bought a book, but only a one-volume thing.
@@davidnovakreadspoetry I have heard really good things about the Caro series. Let’s hope those things are accurate because those books are definitely increasing the weight load in my bookcase! 🤣
I've enjoyed both of the graphic books, especially The Best We Could Do. Great picks!
@@kathleencraine7335 I am so glad to hear you liked the two graphic memoirs!
Great restraint shown at the library book sale! Well done!
@@curatoriallyyours Thank you! I was feeling pretty proud of myself. LOL
You you got some good deals at the library book sale!!
@@carlaking3459 I think so! I was very excited by my finds.

@@theredheadisreading2251 hi Emily!!
The Best We Could Do is a fantastic graphic novel. And I’ve heard great things about Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant. Enjoy!!
@@marisagettas Glad to hear more praise for The Best We Could Do! I feel like it’s winning the lottery to find good graphic memoirs at a library sale!
@@myreadinglife8816 i agree, and those are two staples of the genre
Hi Heidi. Your presidential bio project is really impressive. I've read the Roz Chast book; it's very good.
@@BookChatWithPat8668 thanks Pat! It seems everyone praises the Chast book. Hoping to get to it soon.
@@myreadinglife8816 I first bought it for a friend who was taking care of two elderly parents, but eventually, I read it myself. Very good.
I would love to see an updated president’s challenge video. I believe you just have the one from a few years ago? I’m hoping to start the challenge this winter with Chernow’s book on Washington. Cheers!
@@amylynnm324 I have been planning to do an update. Just haven’t gotten to it yet. But I do want to discuss this!
I would be interested to know where you look for recommendations for presidential biographies.
@@kayhammock I like this site the best bestpresidentialbios.com/curriculum/
@@myreadinglife8816 Thanks for this!
FDR! So, you’re planning on reading four volumes of LBJ?
@@alldbooks9165 Yes I am going to try. I read three volumes of Teddy Roosevelt. And I have several books to read for FDR. I’m such a nerd!
What a great review! I'll have to check out this series.
@@louisep1962 It is a very thought-provoking book!
Such a great review!! 🤩
Thank you! It was a really great read!
If I was to take part, I would not have read the book in translation. 🤣 I really should read the first book in the series, though.
@@LunaciaBooks Ha Ha! No you definitely could read it in the original language. I like to read even loosely related books in order. I can’t help myself!
@@myreadinglife8816 Yeah, I tend to be that way as well, tbh.

Hurray for mature lady protagonists! I will have to check that one out, it sounds harrowing but well worthwhile. So funny I started on Housekeeper and Professor today, also loving it. Its always good to encounter authors with a broad range, but H&P seems a very you book, and Memory Police not at all 😅 not too surprised it was not a success.
@@ReadBecca More mature lady protagonists! I think it is awesome that Ogawa writes such disparate books, even if they don’t always work for me!
Wow, that’s a year’s worth of recommendations!
@@hlphowell this is what happens when I don’t get to film a monthly Wrapup! Lol
The Ariel Lawhon book sounds amazing! I really loved another of her books - Code Name Helene so I shall definitely add this one to my TBR. Well done on meeting your page goal 😊
