    Just an observation. I'm glad the presenter spoke first about his choice of creating yet-another-new-term: "upfront". That's the specific reason I watched the video (only to that point). He didn't like embodied because the carbon is not "in" the material? Well, is "upfront" any less obtuse? It's easy enough to clarify the term "embodied" and there is benefit in not adding more words to the lexicon for an already named concept. (I'll grant a pass on rethinking the common name of some fish species to make it more attractive on the menu). I'm all about sufficiency. And "embodied" is sufficient. 🙂

I know it will be my responsibility to remove the gas add solar and make it as efficient as possible. I know We will get days that will eventually pass 50C. I decided I wanted an earth ship. But without the tires or berm. I do construction usually working on oldest masonry commercial buildings around 150-200 years old. Decided on a skillion/shed roof/mono sloped roof design. Decided on a square notched post and beam timber frame with well insulated cmu block north wall. Glulam some 2x12's or roughly 50x300mm boards to make beams for lofts. Using limestone for masonry veneer. Putting in thermal breaks around windows. I have half my floor area in window area. But zone 5 and yes U.S. climate zones match U.K.'s. Canada does there's backwards. High numbers mean colder instead lower meaning cooler. It's less carbon to use stone and cheaper than have it made into concrete. Concrete block are less labor than stone.

    Thanks for this talk. Australia is in a very similar situation to Canada and USA. There is the money to do deep retrofits to Enerphit standard but the govts are not supportive. When we take into consideration those suburbs/ towns that are destroyed by fire /flood/ storms, then paying for climate action and high-standard buildings makes more economic sense. And how much would you pay for a safe shelter for your family? Enerphit might add 10-20% to the renovation cost but the benefits can be huge. Thanks again. Keep up the good fight. 👍

    this presentation was pretty bad. Just shows off many expensive windows that are shipped half way around the world and they only have an R value of maybe 8 or R10 max!! Why not just use regular cheap windows and with the 80% savings then buy or cusotm make some thermal shutters to cover the windows at night to an R value closer to R15. Glass is a horrible insulator, Best to have cheaper alternative materials bring up the Rvalue.

    Thank you for the (objective) comprehensive presentation. Where else is interior Thermal MASS,? other than , floor slab[= lower priority], as compared to wall-mass. As we all know Dry-wall is not MASS. What maybe the ratio of true MASS, and floor space, as compared to 'Aperture =over all window-opening.? How many trees had to be scarified to build this house - what was percentage of waste building this in reg. Stick-Frame.? What was the actual cost per sq/ft., and who can afford this?. If this is a truly Direct Passive Solar home, will it NEVER go below 38 degrees when ALL other systems are down [as there are 'Active components], when there is no external heat source, while outside there's a raging winter storm - 3 days in,, and temps are hovering around 0 F. and lower?! Will it never freeze inside, no matter what conditions.? Are there in interior walls -- upper and lower vents to cause natural convection through out the house, thus moving [warm] air w/o mechanical means? Are your windows on Solar south simply 'clear-glass, except on some East - West, but North side indeed have Low-E glass?. ( or other) How easily could you change out windows, and doors?, or are they all locked in. Thanks for the discussion on these points.Paul Kloppenburg / pckpablo@gmail.com -- Crestone, Colorado

    • @2brazy4ubitch
      @2brazy4ubitch 2 года назад

      Look into Raico (DE)…. They may be able to advise on that and work with whatever the economical hurricane resistant IGU buildup in your area is. Typically there is an upgraded thermal break and airtightness from any major curtain wall manufacturer these days but your options are probably limited to fully captured systems. I doubt there is much of an industry for residential / low rise hurricane resistant passive house factory glazed punched opening windows. Probably going to have to be fabricated more or less locally (depends where raw IGUs come from) by a glazing contractor that is able to work with arbitrary IGU thicknesses.

And it's our choice, to start imporving in all these areas. The existing examples (special thanks to ChoShelds Studio and many other committed architects) prove, that this is really working; it's not expensive and it also improves the quality of live (think about the smoke from wildfires 2020). These are positive developments - let's unite for a vision of the future which will improve living conditions.
