This is so nice and plain for a change. Perhaps men do make it seem like they climbed Everest to make their fortunes. This takes the heavy energy out of that pursuit, because it shouldn’t be heavy. I’m sure she had tough days but this feels more like a mentally sustainable way to build a business.

I live in Baltimore and our cost of living is one of the highest in the USA. Plus the rest of MD. The lowest rents here for a studio apt in a not so decent area is $1500. Not to mention our murder rate per capital is the highest in the USA. We are 1/8th the size of major cities and have worse crime. We are already over 300 murders for the year by like April. So you might want to pick another place 😂 One of my major initiatives is cleaning this city up especially my neighbor but I’ve been stopped at every turn possible.

The idea oof moneywise is great. Execution fails because of fear of offending guests. This episode really shows this. Guy with limited but useful skill set (communications / speech writing) gets lucky and wins lottery of life ... $30MM! All good so far. Then this person proceeds to assume that if he wins the lottery once, he has the skill set to repeat. He's not a venture guy. Not an experienced businessman who has had P&L responsibility and the responsibility to grow a business. Not a portfolio manager who can be trusted to manage wealth. Not even a lot of 'common sense' about levels of risk. And don't get me started about his relationship to contracts. His first inclination was to use 'east coast' experienced wealth manager to PRESERVE lottery winnings. Good choice. Then, the next thought was to make big bets because [insert something here]. So wealth manager ignored or fired (not clear) and lottery winner makes big bet because [???]. Big bet turns out to be bigger because lottery winner also has no M&A experience and no contract experience ... contract for business blows up and lottery winner loses all. ----- [a] It is great that Dominic shared his story. Very difficult thin to do. Great that Dominic accepted his loss and is rebuilding his life one cautious step at a time. [b] But the story for the audience is about silicon valley hubris. And that is where the story should have gone. A lot of questions went unanswered because they were unasked: [1] If he stuck with the wealth manager would his wealth still be over $30MM? (Hint: yes.) Why exactly did he decide change strategy? [2] If he had a qualified business manager or M&A guy to assist in the buyer contract and lawyer hiring, would Dominic have been exposed to catastrophic wealth loss? (Hint: no.) What did he do that was wrong and what exactly should he have done? [3] Would a business advisor even allow a sale of a business to turn into an investment in some unknown person/entity? (Hint: no.) Did he investigate the buyer? Do A Kroll? What did he do and how did he create his deal todo checklist? [4] Why did Dominic think he was qualified to run a business, sell a business or invest in a business? Did I miss some life experience or an MBA? (Hint: hubris.) Really big question. [5] Why exactly did Dominic feel he needed to quickly exceed $100MM or more? Did someone ever mention to him that a 30 something with an investible $25MM would likely have $100MM to $200MM at 65? There is a cautionary tale here about tech and tech adjacent folks who win the lottery believing that all thing are possible for them. Mark Z is the real thing, he proved it from day 1 to day 5,000. And so did some of the others at the top of the team. But was Dominic one of them? (Hint: probably not.). This could have been a very impactful discussion with applicability for a pretty wide audience (A $1MM windfall will have the same impact for some). Even those who think they are on the path of becoming wealthy. But this requires some (polite) tough questioning and discussion. I'm not sure that you have the personal style to be the guy who can have this discussion. Your best path might be something softer.
