Those boys should have been practicing improv to a blues backing track prior to getting up on stage. I mean they KNEW it was gonna be a blues head cutting session.

Steve Vai be creating great music through improv. Props to Polyphia for doing great music for us future generations to enjoy and Steve Vai for inspiring millions of musicians especially guitarist to be better at what they do best. Not gonna lie, I was hoping for them specially Tim to go improv hand to hand with Steve Vai same as John Mayer with BB king. It’s still great to witness this moment and I really do enjoy the their “Ego Death” song featuring Steve Vai.

It's easy to throw judgments out at stuff like this but there's a few things worth noting. Yes they obviously seemed awkward and a bit nervous. Consider who their playing in front of. Not just Vai himself and his band, but even the crowd. It's not like they were just playing to a crowd who they could assume knows them or likes their music. Which brings me to the next thing worth noting. This style of playing is likely outside their typical wheel house. I doubt they do much improvising at their own shows. Let alone with a different style all together. The sheer nervousness they likely felt would be enough to hinder their playing. I'd be willing to bet if they were jamming in a room alone they probably would have sounded better. That stress alone can make you fumble over yourself and hold back. So I wouldn't judge too harshly based off this performance. They've both proved them selves to be skilled players and distinguished composers. If they're lacking a bit due to anxiety in front of a crowd that isn't theirs in a style outside their own along side Steve Vai, it's not only understandable but completely acceptable. They're young an I'd bet anything they'll have progressed greatly in just the next decade. Steve certainly sees their skill and potential. If not they wouldn't even be there as they were. Whether this was proposed with good intention by Steve or not. If it was, it's because he sees them as the new generation of virtuosic players. If it was done ill intended at all, I'd assume it was because he sees them as a threat of sorts because they're virtuosic players. Either way they wouldn't be there otherwise. Give em a few years to become more comfortable performing. They'll be fine. 🤘

You could definitely tell. Steve was flowing while Tim and the other guy somewhat struggled to come up with interesting things to play. I don’t know how often they improvise but they need some work. Don’t get me wrong though, those guys could play circles around most guitarist. They just need to get more comfortable with improve and letting loose. Unless this was just a bad video of them.

All three are impressive players. But what impresses me the most here is that usually when a player shows up as a guest soloist they are using borrowed gear, they don't have "their" rig and their sound, and the soundman doesn't Ballance their level generously, so they are never as loud as the host. Maybe Vai learned that generosity of communal spirit from Satriani from all those years being involved with G3 tours. This was never a problem then, but those were more than a one off event. With this show, he made sure they had their own effects and got them turned up to match him. He probably even did a soundcheck with them! That says a lot about his character and respect for his fellow guitar brothers! Love it!

I think what made this a bit awkward was not "Tim & Scotty's lack of improv skills". They definitely can play solid improv. it's the lack of a chord progression in the background. If Steve had laid down a chord progression as foundation for the jam and swapped the roles of rhythm & lead with each other it would've sounded much more fluid and musical, in my opinion. There was rhythm playing but there wasn't a solid & consistent chord progression

Is is just me or did anyone else think we were gonna see Dr Teeth, Animal, Zoot and Kermit make an appearance? Sorry, I always think of Jim Henson for some reason. Back on track though, I do hope improvisational skills isn't a dying thing amongst the new wave of guitarists - it should be(!!) a huge part of any good guitarist's abilities. Locking yourself away from every other style is never the best route for a guitarist. That said it would have been good to see Tim given time to play something from their own catalogue, and this is why I don't like these king of random jams. They almost always end up being embarrassing for the player...and the audience.
